Reeva was spending time beside everyone else. However, the priest and people that are allowed near him as still limited. Because the saintess still didn’t trust him fully. Reeva could only sit there alone in front of the pale yellow fire.

"Enjoying the view?"

Max sounds from behind. The priest walked over and sat next to him. The dancing fire now had another companion.

"Thought they didn’t let you near me?"

"They couldn’t keep me out," Max said "Besides I’d survived you... most likely... I don’t know and I don’t think I care. I thought I would die back there but I guess the lord has a better plan for me."

The priest didn’t know what kind of emotion he was feeling right now. It’s a mix of surprise, joy, and something sad.

"Are you Ok?" Reeva looked at the priest’s body but he couldn’t see much because the robe covered most of it. Max tugged the cloth to reveal his arm that should have been twisted but, now pristine skin like the injuries never happened.

"As you see, the others did a good job"

Although there was no fourth circle healing priest in the saintess party, the third one did the job just fine. "Though it felt a bit painful when they had to cut the flesh out."

Reeva did not experience that suffering, but he imagined what it would be like if he were influenced by the void. He had chills down my spine just thinking about it.

"Must be rough"

"Yeah, the most painful thing in life... just after losing loved ones."

"Who?" Reeva was curious. He never knew the past of this young priest. Usually, people would reach the 4th circle when they were in their thirties or more and Max looked to be a bit younger.

"When I was young, I lost my mom to a plague. That time I was out gathering apples and came back to the lifeless body of my mom. At that point, I vowed to save everyone. That’s why I wanted to church to help more people."

"I’m sorry," Reeva said with a sorrowful face, it must have been hard witnessing that sight. In two lives Reeva didn’t have to experience that. The last life he had was a monotonous one when compared to this one. Well, it could be considered a perfect life for the past him.

He got a good job, his parent and loved ones were alive and everything was going great. But being in the novel gave him more perspective than before, more experience, and more emotion than he ever felt. It was a good feeling.

"Don’t be" Max said with a calm look "I can’t even remember my mom’s face properly anymore. It’s been more than twenty years. In a weird way, it was like my mother sacrificed herself so I could be on this path."

"Your place wasn’t good?"

"Back then, my family didn’t have money. We were just farmers in the countryside trying to make due each season. We only had enough to feed us four so when the plague hit us, we were left without any option. As our village was not on the map, there’s no church there, so my mother was unfortunate."

Max picked up a nearby twig and snapped it in half, throwing it into the fire.

"So when the church came I pleaded with them to please help my mother but it was too late. No god’s miracle would bring back the dead. But then the priest saw a potential in me and raised me as a healer."

"Was it hard? Training to be a healer I mean"

Max thought for a bit and saw no reason why he couldn’t tell an apostle the church’s inner workings.

"Well first we only had to do chores but they ramped up the task to help us build character. Then after they found mystic power in me, they moved me to train with another group. All around it was way better than staying in the countryside with no money. At least my sister could live comfortably."

"You have a sister?" Reeva had caught it earlier that he had more members and wanted to ask.

"One year older than me, now she’s a teacher in the royal academy, maybe you’ve met her already. Her name was Lisa with no surname"

Reeva wanted to say that he didn’t even know how many teachers the school had.

"Maybe? I don’t know"

He answered truthfully, even though he inhabited this body, the original Reeva memories didn’t transfer over.

"I guess I needed to remain my sister to be more social" Max smiled and they talked a bit more before Max got called elsewhere. They still needed every healer they could get to cure the people. Among the people that got healed, Reeva could see the little girl sleeping soundly. His heart was filled with peace knowing that she survived.

"What are you smiling about?’

Another voice came as the figure approached. It was Nena, still wearing the priest outfit.

"About how good of a bathe I will have"

"Really? Do you want a good bath too?" She smiled, her yellow mist was seeing to no end.

"No," Reeva answered, smiling.

"Gah, I hate you already" She made an annoyed face but Reeva could still see the yellow mist coming from her.

"So why are you here?"

"Oh, uhm..... Lucy said something about the lord’s word... Oh right, she wanted you to ask the lord to check on the mother. She needed to know if that thing was still around or not" Nena puffed her chest out "Even though I already dealt with it."

"Good job... But I’ll check for it just in case"

Reeva was also of the same opinion, he wanted to know if the mother survived or not because he didn’t believe that one of the main villains of The Divine Twig would die this easily. As the void didn’t die either.

That night he appeared in the field of reeds.
