Extra's Perfect Ending-Chapter 304: Ruin
The deep darkness of the ruins was illuminated little by little as the group walked through. Holen was not holding the torch and leading the way, followed closely by Jell. Kanku was a bit annoyed that his lighter and wood got confiscated. Oven at the back also felt a mix of emotion in him.
Earlier when Holen talked to him, he felt his bond with the guy increase, however after mulling over it. He felt like it was a half-truth. Holen’s words were a mix of truth and manipulation.
Normally he would brush the detective word off but at this time, he couldn’t. The motion in the detective’s eyes couldn’t be fake.
While the knight was faced with a dilemma in the back, Holen led the way slowly. Checking if any traps would potentially kill them. The wall was constructed with marble. Paintings depicted some sort of daily life scattered throughout the place.
It would be an archeologist’s dream to be here, however, Holen doubts they would get much from this place since the painting was all but added by now. Only the paint remains.
The detective couldn’t make out much of what the painting was. However, he also wasn’t focused on that. His face turned serious when he felt something when he stepped on the marble tiles. This one felt a little different.
However, it was not a problem with this specific tile but the tiles ahead. The weight shifted slighter to the front of the tiles, suggesting something was missing in the tiles ahead.
"Why did you stop?"
Kanku asked, a little pissy since he lost his stuff. Holen didn’t answer he crouched down on the floor and used his hand to press the tile on his foot. Indeed the weight was slightly shifted to the front suggesting something up ahead.
The hallway was filled with 3 tiles across and Holen didn’t count how long but these tiles were not small. It could easily fit a person inside.
"Is there anything useless on you?"
Holen’s question was meant for Jell who also looking at the detective. He must have found something.
"I don’t have anything... But maybe that would do"
Jell pointed at the rock nearby... No, it’s not a rock but some part of the marble walls that got destroyed due to time. Jell picked it up and came back to Holen.
"Drop it here right?" Jell’s head gestures to the tiles up ahead.
"Yep," Holen affirmed.
The rock was tossed onto the tiles and made a thud sound. However when the rock hit the tile it simply sunk into the floor and disappeared. Everyone in the tunnel couldn’t believe their eyes.
"It’s gone? What happened?" Kanku’s eyes widened, the traps in his tribe weren’t like this. This reaction is mutual between the knights and the detective.
"Looks like we’re dealing with some mystic room... we better not mess with this"
As same as before, Holen wouldn’t want to mess with something mystic. The other was also in the same boat, even Kanku who looked the most curious out of them all knew that it wasn’t a good idea to mess with power beyond your control.
"Let’s turn back"
Holen immediately led the group out of the underground passage. The light in the previous room provided a clear picture of the route ahead. They didn’t venture very far because five steps could bring them back to their starting point.
"Well, that was a fruitful adventure" Oven couldn’t help but be said. Holen looked at the guy and agreed with him.
"Do you think that the vines left already?"
Before they got in here, The vines were pretty close to catching them. So there was a high chance that the vines were still around
"Let’s check" Holen’s suggestion drew a bit of a look from both guys. "The tribe will catch us if we stay here remember?"
"Right"
The two of them almost forgot that they were escaping with the kid.
"Help me open the door."
It was a stone that one could move with pushing or pulling. However, they mainly pushed because the handle for pulling was small. Holen didn’t understand how such a hostile architecture could be made, he and the knight needed to pull with all their might to open this door the first time.
His hand was still hurt from pushing the door when trying to get in. This time however Oven was up, so the detective didn’t need to lift a finger. The two of them gripped the handle as hard as they could, then they pulled.
"Ghhh"
The door began to move, revealing a bit of the outside cave. It was a bit dark but the overall color here was blue. The ice that was all over this place made it that way. Holen peek his eyes out through the tiny hole and couldn’t ee anything other than the blue cave.
"It’s safe, push the door"
Both of the knights nodded. They exerted even more force pulling this massive door. However, the door seemed to be stuck on something.
"We can’t move it"
Holen checked the door again, to see what happened. After examining it he found out that the rubble had gone under the door and the force that Oven and Jell exert jammed it right inside.
"This rock here blocks the door"
Holen pointed out the problem for everyone. The rock wedges the door upward, making the opening mechanism much harder to push and outright impossible to move forward.
"Then we need to pull it back"
Jill sighed, he really didn’t want to pull this door open. Even just pushing it already hurt his hand.
"Holen... There’s something..."
However just when they were about to pull the door, the light above them flickered. The room that was illuminated by that light dimmed a bit. Holen looked up to see what was happening, it couldn’t be nighttime because when he last checked, the sun was still up pretty high in the sky.
He squeezes his eyes trying to see what’s blocking the light. His eyes then widened upon seeing what it was, the vines! It’s back!
"Pulled faster! The vine is here "
His voice was urgent, kicking the two knights there awoke. They began pulling the door with all their might. Holen didn’t sit still, he also helped them pull the door, his hand hurt from the act. However, no matter how much the door was pulled, the stone that wedged the door was too much to pull through.
"Faster! Faster!"
Kanku panicked, he also felt terror when he saw the vines. The light that shone down quickly went away when the vines filled the hole. Knaku could feel death approaching them. He looked at the progress on the door and his worry tripled!
"There’s no time! we need to get in the ruins!"
Holen felt the pressure when Knaku suggested. He glimpsed at the light above and saw that the vines were coming in fast. He gritted his teeth and ran the situation in his head. Finally, he agreed with Kanku, there was no time for them to pull the door open.
"Get off the door, we’re going in the ruins!"
Holen shouted as he gathered the wood and lit the fire again. The light illuminated the room, finally able them to see after their light was blocked. Jell and Oven also got out of the door, ready to follow Holen.
"Come!"
All of them run behind Holen who’s charging into the ruined tunnel. Without their horse, the speed was far slower, and the vines could definitely catch up to them. Their only hope was to lure it into the trap and pray that the mystic traps stall them long enough.
Holen’s step was steady and his mind focused on the floor, trying to feel every step that he ran. He knew that something was different when he stepped on the flooring so he used that as an indicator for traps.
Under pressure his mind was forced to run at max speed, trying to figure out the floor traps. The first one was easy since he already identified it but the second one was a bit trickier. His mind quickly identified the floor that he stepped on.
Holen then switched to the right tiles and continued to run along. The sound of vines, crawling on the floor urges them to run faster. They did not dare to look back because if they missed a step here, their life would be in danger.
Their eyes followed Holen closely, and their legs acted when Holen switched tiles. After some time, not only did they hear the vines behind them. They also heard traps activating. The sound of arrows and metal echoed through the whole place. Boosting their terror meter to the highest degree.
After running and avoiding traps for a while Holen finally saw a room. An opening that they could maybe fool the vine with. However before Holen reached it, Kanku behind him pulled his suit.
"Watch out!"
The kid screamed atop his lungs and successfully pulled Holen to a stop.
