Lilith sat at her usual perch in the Underwood estate’s library, staring at the waning afternoon sun.

After a few minutes, she slipped away, moving back to the cozy spot hidden in the middle of the library that she’d been using.

She sat down, surrounded by books, many she had pulled from the shelves but hadn’t touched.

She was supposed to be studying the history of Albion’s noble houses, but her mind refused to focus. Her thoughts had been consumed by one thing—well, one person—since the moment Ren had ridden away.

She found her fingers tracing the edge of the coin he had given her, her grip tightening and loosening in a rhythmic motion. The weight of it was reassuring, grounding. A promise. One day, he would return.

And when he did, things would be different.

She closed her eyes and allowed herself to imagine it.

Would he be taller? Stronger?

He had promised he would come back more powerful, and the thought sent a thrill through her.

Would they spar again, but this time, she’d be able to match him properly? Would he still smirk in that infuriating way when she lost, or would he finally acknowledge her as his equal?

Would he look at her differently?

A slow smile curled on her lips. He would belong to her. He just didn’t fully understand that yet.

She gripped the coin tightly. No one else mattered. No one else deserved him. They were promised to each other. That’s how it was meant to be.

She whispered his name under her breath, rolling the coin between her fingers, imagining his voice calling out to her. Imagining the day he returned, stronger than before, and saw her standing there, waiting for him.

He would choose her. Because he had to.

A quiet chuckle made her jerk upright, her eyes snapping to Elias, who stood by a nearby shelf. He had been watching her for some time now, his arms crossed, his expression unreadable.

"You’re staring at that coin like you’re trying to bend it with your mind." He said.

Lilith scowled, slipping the coin into her pocket. "Go away."

Elias raised an eyebrow but didn’t move. "I’d rather not. You’ve been acting strange ever since Lord Terence left."

"I’m fine." She snapped.

"Fine?" Elias tilted his head. "You’ve been talking to yourself. A lot. And I don’t think it’s about those battle strategies you were always obsessed with."

Lilith huffed, crossing her arms. "You wouldn’t understand. I was just thinking about our future."

Elias sighed, stepping closer to her. "That’s what concerns me."

Lilith’s expression darkened. "And why is that?"

Elias held her gaze with a calm expression. "Because I don’t think you’re thinking about it the right way."

"What do you mean?" Lilith asked.

"I can tell what’s going through your head." Elias said. "Ren is your betrothed, yes, but you’re treating it like some grand story where the two of you are destined to fall in love."

Lilith’s eyes narrowed. "And?"

Elias hesitated before saying, "What if he doesn’t see it that way?"

Something cold settled in Lilith’s stomach, but she ignored it. "He will."

"How can you be so sure?" Elias asked. "He respects you. He cares about you. But that doesn’t mean he—"

"He gave me his word." Lilith interrupted, her voice sharp. "He promised he’d return. And when he does, we will grow together. We will stand side by side, and eventually, we will be married. That is how it will be."

Her fingers twitched, her mind racing with the idea of someone else trying to take Ren away. It wasn’t possible. It wouldn’t happen. She wouldn’t allow it.

Elias studied her for a long moment before sighing. "You’re obsessed."

Lilith scoffed. "I’m determined. There’s a difference."

Elias didn’t argue further. Instead, he shook his head with a small smile and assumed his usual guard position. "I guess we’ll just agree to disagree."

Lilith glared at him, her jaw tight. He didn’t understand. No one did.

If anyone tries to take him from me…

She clenched her fist tighter around the coin. They won’t get the chance.

Elias had known and guarded Lady Lilith since she was six and right now, he didn’t… like what he was seeing.

Well, it wasn’t that he didn’t like it but more that he was concerned over what he was seeing.

And so, later that evening, he decided to seek out Lord Underwood, finding him in his study.

The lord was reviewing reports from the border territories when Elias entered, closing the door behind him.

"Lord Underwood." Elias said carefully, "I have concerns about Lady Lilith."

Lord Underwood looked up immediately. Anything concerning Lilith might as well be a matter of life and death.

"Concerns? About what?" He asked, dreading what was coming.

Elias shifted his weight as he spoke. "Her fixation on Lord Ren. It’s… growing."

"She speaks of him constantly, as if their future is already set in stone. She doesn’t consider the possibility that he may not return feeling the same way."

Lord Underwood exhaled in relief, before setting down the quill that he had almost destroyed with his tight grip.

"I thought it was something worse." He exhaled, leaning back in his chair. "She is young, Elias. Let her have her dreams."

Elias frowned. "But what if those dreams break her?"

Lord Underwood sighed, rubbing his temples. "Lilith has always been intense. If this is what keeps her focused, let it be. She will straighten out in time."

Elias hesitated. "And if she doesn’t?"

Lord Underwood gave him a long look before responding. "Then Ren will deal with it."

Elias stiffened. "That’s a dangerous gamble, my lord."

The lord’s expression darkened slightly. "Everything in life is a gamble, Elias. But Lilith is my daughter. She is strong. She will learn."

Elias exhaled through his nose, not yet convinced that this was the right course. "And if she doesn’t learn the way you expect?"

Lord Underwood met his gaze evenly. "Then perhaps she will teach him instead."

After a bit of silence, he spoke again.

"Don’t worry about it, Elias. She’ll grow out of it."

Elias exhaled. "Yes, my lord."

After a salute, he left the study with a cold pit in his stomach.

When Ren did return, would he find the same Lilith he left behind? Or would she be someone entirely different?
