The air was filled with the sound of steel clashing against steel and the screams of warriors living and dying as Ren and Thorn carved their way through the chaos of the barbarian raid.

This particular raid was bigger than previous ones and it showed. Everywhere, there were people fighting people, the devastation enough to make the ground slippery with blood, and the scent of iron thick in the night wind.

Ren moved like a phantom, flickering in and out of existence, his sword slicing through his enemies the moment he reappeared.

This was the power of his second blood bound object. His empowered boots allowed him to phase through attacks, making sure it was hard for anyone to hit him.

Beside him, Thorn fought like a brutal warlord, his own empowered cloak shifting and twisting on its own, absorbing blows that would have otherwise ended him.

His sword, another bloodbound weapon, lengthened and curved unpredictably, striking opponents from angles they never saw coming.

The two of them had fought together for years, and it showed in the way they moved. At this point, they were practically unstoppable.

Not to mention the fact that they were now recognizable to the barbarians. On one hand was Thorn, in full plate of armor, complete with helmet and a flowing cape that had a life of its own.

On the other hand was Ren, whose only protection was his breastplate and bracers. With his ability to phase through everything, he was like a wraith in the night.

And after spending four years at the border, they were both recognizable fixtures on the battlefield.

Ren blocked an incoming axe with his forearm, the impact absorbed entirely by his Kinetic Absorption bracers.

Those were his third empowered objects.

A second later, he released the stored energy in an explosive shockwave, sending the barbarian flying back with shattered ribs.

He turned, pivoting through the battlefield, his boots allowing him to phase through a spear thrust before countering with a quick thrust of kinetic energy, blowing the man’s head clean off.

Every kill he made sent more blood flowing into him and his Bloodbound objects, fueling their power.

He had been at this for years, refining his abilities, pushing himself further and further. And now, he could feel it.

The barrier inside him, the threshold he had been straining against for so long.

A final strike, a burst of kinetic energy, and then—

Power surged through him. It was like a dam breaking, raw energy flooding his body, his senses sharpening to an almost painful degree.

His vision momentarily blurred before stabilizing. His muscles felt lighter, his movements quicker, his control more refined.

This was Rank 3.

He had ascended.

Thorn, still engaged in the battle, glanced over and let out a short, breathless laugh. "Well, about damn time! Congratulations!"

"Thank you!" Ren yelled back with a grin of his own. "Now, let’s finish this!"

But before they could press their advantage, a shadow passed overhead, accompanied by a piercing screech.

"Druid!" Someone yelled as a massive wyvern descended onto the battlefield, its scales dark as night, its rider wearing the usual furs overlaid with bone armor.

A barbarian Druid.

The moment the Druid raised his staff, the battlefield trembled.

Vines burst from the ground, snaking around the soldiers, while jagged spikes of rock jutted upward, impaling those who couldn’t move in time.

The wyvern let out another shriek, its eyes glowing an eerie green.

"I’m on it!" Ren yelled, signalling to the other knights that he’d take care of this particular problem.

Without hesitation, he moved.

Kicking off the ground, he used his boots to phase through a rising stone spike and reappear at the top of one of the broken watchtowers nearby.

From there, he launched himself toward the wyvern, flicking a coin ahead of him and blinking midair to meet the Druid.

The man blinked in surprise but recovered quickly, his staff whipping out towards Ren.

Ren raised his bracers and absorbed the strike, his eyes widening momentarily at the amount of force that had been behind it.

What the hell?

This wasn’t the first Druid he’d fought but this one was definitely stronger than the ones he’d had the chance of fighting.

The Druid snarled, and the wyvern twisted midair, its tail whipping through the air toward Ren.

Ren phased through it just in time, reappearing on the other side and lashing out with a shockwave punch from his bracers.

There was a crack as some of the wyvern’s scales skittered off it’s skin and both Druid and wyvern lost their balance as they fell. Just before they hit the ground, they recovered, slamming into the ground with the wyvern’s feet.

The Druid, one hand on the spikes jutting out of the spike’s neck and the other on his staff glared at Ren who teleported down to the ground.

The other fighters around them gave them space, each one preoccupied with their own battle but unwilling to become collateral damage in this one.

"Kill!" The Druid snarled and the wyvern inhaled deeply before exhaling a stream of corrosive venom that moved faster than it had any right to.

Ren barely managed to activate his kinetic barrier in time, the liquid sizzling against the almost invisible forcefield before dissipating.

"You’re persistent." Ren muttered, rolling his shoulders.

"And you’re nothing against the will of nature!" The Druid growled, showing teeth.

Ren smirked. "Then let’s see if nature can keep up."

He flicked another coin behind the Druid and blinked again, reappearing with a devastating downward slash.

The Druid barely managed to block it with his staff, but the force of the strike almost threw him off the back of the wyvern.

Before the wyvern could even turn and snap at him, Ren twisted his body midair and slammed both hands forward, releasing a full-powered kinetic blast.

The explosion sent the Druid hurtling off his mount, crashing down to the ground. The wyvern screeched in rage, surging forward to protect its master, but Ren was already moving.

He blinked again, landing directly in front of the fallen Druid.

The barbarian groaned, trying to rise, but Ren wasn’t about to give him the chance.

Drawing the rarely used sword from his side, he drove it through the man’s chest, pinning him to the ground.

The Druid gasped, blood bubbling past his lips as the light in his eyes faded.

The wyvern, now masterless, screeched again before flapping its wings and retreating into the night.

The battlefield was silent for a moment before a shout rose up from one of the barbarians.

"Retreat!" Without a Druid at their back, they knew that this would be a losing battle. And like a wave breaking, they turned and fled, abandoning their raid.

The soldiers around them cheered at the sights, the Knights at their side sheathing their weapons.

After a few seconds, they turned back to the wounded, who groaned as the Knight healers roamed, giving first aid to those who needed it.

Ren exhaled, before pulling his sword free of the corpse before him and straightening.

Thorn walked up beside him, wiping blood from his blade. "You did it again. Remind me never to bet against you."

Ren smirked. "You wouldn’t win anyway."

Thorn chuckled. "Fair enough. Now, let’s clean up. We still have a lot to do."
