Ren and Thorn walked along the dirt path outside Castle Ross, the crisp evening air brushing against them as they moved farther away from the village outside the castle.

The wheat fields stretched before them, golden in the light of the setting sun.

For the first time in a long while, Ren felt at ease, but he knew that wouldn’t last. He had plans, and their time at home would be brief.

Thorn glanced at him, his expression thoughtful. "I still don’t get it. You’ve been back for barely a week, and now we’re running off to the capital? What exactly are you trying to achieve?"

Ren kept his gaze forward. He trusted Thorn enough to reveal some of the details of what they were going to do. Well, the details, not the underlying reason.

"We’re going to the capital for three reasons." He said.

Thorn sighed, shaking his head. "Of course, you’ve got a plan. Alright, let’s hear it."

Ren smirked but didn’t look at him. "First, we’re going there to dismantle a criminal organization."

Thorn stopped walking. "Wait… what?"

Ren finally turned to face him. "You heard me."

Thorn’s eyes narrowed. "And why exactly are we doing that? I thought we were just going for the tournament."

Ren exhaled. He’d have to do something he didn’t like doing to Thorn. Lie.

"You know those trips I took out when we were in the camp?"

"To visit Lady Lilith?"

"That’s the thing. I didn’t always visit Lady Lilith. I also visited other places."

Thorn’s brows rose. "And you didn’t take me with you?"

"You didn’t ask."

Thorn opened his mouth, paused, then closed it. "That’s… kinda true."

"Anyways." Ren waved away the digression with a smile. "I found out that this particular criminal organization is planning to assassinate someone important."

Thorn tilted his head. "Who?"

The king, but he definitely wasn’t going to tell Thorn that. It was better to keep things under wraps.

Ren’s expression hardened. "It’s better for you not to know."

Thorn studied him for a long moment before letting out a low chuckle. "You know, most people would call this insane. But I trust you, so fine. What else?"

Ren smirked. "I also plan to steal their money."

Thorn barked out a laugh. "Oh, great. So not only are we going after a criminal organization, but we’re also robbing them? That sounds perfectly safe."

Ren chuckled. "It’s not like we have many other options to make money."

While he might have knowledge from reading the game’s wiki, Ren didn’t have any secret product to sell, or any hidden discovery to make the Ross family wealthy.

Eternal Souls was a game, not a story book. All he knew about was the organizations that had money and where their vault was. If he wanted money, he’d have to take it.

Thorn rubbed his temples. "Alright, let’s assume I go along with this madness. Who are these people, and why are they so important?"

"Fuchsia." Ren said calmly. "They’re one of the largest underground organizations in the capital, led by a Rank 4 Knight. They control smuggling, information networks, and they have deep connections with the nobility."

Thorn whistled. "A Rank 4 Knight? That’s not someone we can just take lightly. How do you plan on dealing with him?"

Ren smirked. "I have everything under control."

Thorn sighed. "You always say that. One of these days, I hope you’re right."

"I am right. Besides, we won’t be fighting everybody in Fuchsia. We can’t even if we wanted to. We’re just two people."

"All we need to do is to kill the key members tying them to nobility. They’ll devolve into infighting to fill the space and by the time it’s settled, I’ll already have what I need."

"I see." Thorn nodded.

Ren turned back toward the road. "The second reason we’re going to the capital is that I want to convince one of the princes to send an army to wipe out the barbarians."

Thorn’s eyebrows shot up. "An army? That’s practically impossible. No noble would be willing to send an army to wipe them out completely. They’d lose too much to risk it."

Ren shook his head. "I don’t want to eliminate all the barbarians. That would be unrealistic. Just the clan that constantly raids us."

"That means the army doesn’t have to be too large, just a thousand or two. And if we wipe out the barbarians, the border will finally have some peace."

And our soldiers won’t be tied there when the war finally breaks out.

Thorn considered this for a moment before nodding. "Alright. That actually makes sense. If we can take out just that one group, it’ll free up soldiers for other conflicts."

Ren nodded. "Exactly."

And he’d already chosen the prince he wanted for this to happen. With the Penny Prince on his side, he’ll utilize the original protagonist’s plot armor, whether the man liked it or not.

Thorn ran a hand through his hair. "And let me guess, the third reason is the King’s Tournament?"

Ren grinned. "Of course."

Thorn let out a laugh. "Well, at least that one’s straightforward. And honestly? From what I’ve seen with my own eyes, I think you’ve got a real shot."

"Thanks." Ren grinned before turning serious. Right now, the only path to power was blood and gold and the capital held both.

Time is running out.

There was only one year left before the first Minor Calamity, the Red Plague, would arrive. And there were only three months left before the king would be assassinated by Fuchsia.

By dismantling Fuchsia’s command line, he’d push back the king’s death by at least a year or two, giving himself time to deal with the Red Plague first.

And by eliminating the barbarian clan, he would free up valuable soldiers who could be used when the coming civil war began.

He’d also accumulate wealth for the Ross family and strengthen his ties with the Penny Prince.

Thorn nudged him. "You’re thinking again. I know that look."

Ren smirked. "Just making sure everything is in place."

Thorn stretched, looking toward the distant horizon where the capital awaited. "You know, we’ve been at this for years now."

"Fighting and growing stronger. And now, I see why." he turned to Ren. "Whatever you’re planning, Ren, count me in."

"Because if there’s one thing I know, it’s that greatness always follows behind you."
