Morning came, the golden light of the rising sun streaming through the windows of the inn.

Ren stirred awake, still feeling exhausted from the previous night’s events.

The teleportation, the battle, Thorn’s injury, and securing the healer, had drained him.

They had teleported back to the inn at Rosefield after Thorn had been stabilized, making sure no one had come looking for them or suspected their absence.

Fortunately, nothing of the sort had happened.

While Thorn was definitely okay, he’d still need to eat more to replenish his energy. That was fine with Ren

After taking his bath and getting himself ready, he descended the stairs to the common room, yawning deeply as he rubbed his eyes.

The scent of freshly baked bread and sizzling meat filled the air, making his mouth water. As he stepped into the room, he immediately spotted Lilith seated at a table in the middle of the room, waiting for him.

She looked up as he approached, her crimson eyes studying him with quiet amusement. "You must have been really tired." She observed, resting her chin on one hand.

Ren yawned again, stretching his arms. "Still am, honestly. I could probably sleep for another day."

Lilith smiled. "Then sleep in the carriage. I’ll watch over you."

Ren hesitated. Something about that idea was somewhere between uncomfortable and unsettling.

Having Lilith watching him while he slept felt like handing a fox the keys to a henhouse. "I’ll… think about it."

They were soon presented with their breakfast, hearty servings of roasted meat, fresh bread, and boiled eggs.

Ren dug in, eager to eat. There was silence as he enjoyed his meal but it was soon broken, as an unwelcome presence entered the tavern.

A tall, handsome nobleman with red hair strolled in with an almost physical aura of confidence, his fine clothing pristine despite the dusty roads.

His hair was neatly tied back, and his blue eyes practically glowed with self-importance as he moved through the room like he owned it.

The moment he entered, the chatter in the room shifted slightly. Some looked away, others whispered among themselves. This man was well known.

Without acknowledging Ren, he walked straight up to Lilith’s side, offering her a charming smile. "Lady Lilith Underwood. What a delightful surprise."

Lilith barely spared him a glance. "Who are you?"

The noble’s smile flickered for a moment before reappearing like nothing was wrong. "Ah, forgive my rudeness."

"I am Vesper Rosefield, son of Lord Rosefield." He said, like it meant something. Maybe it did but Ren didn’t care. "I was most pleased to hear of your presence in my family’s lands. I thought it would be remiss of me not to greet you personally."

Ren exhaled, already losing patience. He had very little of it left after the events of last night.

Lilith was as dismissive as ever. "That’s unnecessary."

Vesper chuckled, but there was a flicker of irritation in his eyes. "You are as direct as the rumors suggest. But surely, you would not turn down a walk with me? Rosefield lands have much to offer, and I would be honored to show you—"

"Fuck off." Ren interrupted, his tone flat.

The table went silent.

Vesper blinked, his head slowly turning toward Ren as if acknowledging him for the first time. "Excuse me?"

Ren, still chewing his food, met Vesper’s gaze with disinterest. "You heard me. Fuck off."

A hush fell over the surrounding tables. The few patrons nearby subtly leaned in, sensing trouble brewing. Thorn, seated nearby, let out a low whistle.

Vesper’s expression darkened. "Do you have any idea who you’re speaking to?"

Ren took a slow sip of his drink before setting it down. "Yeah. Some guy who doesn’t understand what ’no’ means."

Vesper’s face twisted in offense. "I am Vesper Rosefield, heir to House Rosefield! A noble house of Albion with standing far greater than—"

Ren cut him off. "And I’m Lilith’s fiancé. Now fuck off."

Vesper’s eye twitched. "The sheer disrespect! You dare insult the Rosefield name? Do you even understand the consequences of such an affront?"

Ren smirked. "I’ll handle them if it means you shut up and leave."

Vesper’s composure cracked, his face reddening. "You have no respect for your betters! I should have you—"

Ren, already bored, leaned forward and his arm flashed.

The punch landed square on Vesper’s jaw, sending him crashing backward into a chair before slumping to the floor in an unconscious heap.

His attendants gasped, scrambling to his side in shock. The entire tavern fell into stunned silence for a moment.

Then, Lilith clapped.

She grinned at Ren, eyes sparkling with delight. "That was cool."

Ren rolled his shoulders. "He was annoying."

Thorn, who had been watching from a nearby table, let out a low whistle. "Remind me never to get on your nerves first thing in the morning."

"With how much you like to talk, you definitely will." Ren drawled.

The Rosefield attendants quickly gathered up their unconscious young master, murmuring among themselves as they dragged him out of the tavern.

No doubt, the news of what had just happened would spread quickly, but Ren didn’t care. He had no patience for fools who couldn’t take ’no’ for an answer.

Lilith, looking far too pleased, leaned forward. "Ren, you must protect my honor more often. It’s very attractive."

Ren sighed. "Just eat your food."

She giggled but complied, finishing her meal with renewed enthusiasm.

Once breakfast was done, the group prepared to move. The carriages were ready, and the guards were positioned for departure.

As Ren stepped inside the carriage, Lilith sat beside him, resting her head on his shoulder as the journey resumed.

"You should rest now." She murmured.

Ren, too tired to argue, closed his eyes. "Wake me when we get there."

Lilith smiled, content. "Of course, my dear."

Ren slowly fell into sleep and by the time he woke up, the event of that morning had already faded from his memory.

But for Vesper Rosefield, that was the beginning of a deep-seated hatred for Terence Ross.
