The night was calm, as if it wasn’t the usual time for nefarious activity.

A good man will say this is the time for a good night’s sleep. But a wise man would lock all his doors before going to sleep.

One would think all was well with the world at the inn, until they saw the shadows moving.

The Underwood and Ross night guards patrolled, but for Lilith, that was no detriment.

She slipped from her bed, quickly blowing out the candlelight, plunging her room in darkness. The only points of light were her eyes, which glowed faintly.

The walls of her room felt suffocating, her thoughts circling endlessly around Ren and the way he had been acting lately.

She knew he was hiding something.

She could see it in the way his eyes darted away when she asked certain questions, the way his mind was elsewhere even when he was with her.

It was unacceptable.

She needed answers, and if Elias was blocking her from finding them, if Ren wouldn’t provide them willingly, she would find them herself.

Stepping toward the window, she reached out with her power. The familiar translucent blue energy of her Gift shimmered into existence, forming around her hands like a second skin.

A moment later, it expanded into elongated claws, gripping the window frame as she pulled herself up with ease.

She crouched on the windowsill, her gaze locked on the window at the end of that same floor. Ren’s room.

The distance between the two structures wasn’t small, nor would it be easy to cross, but it wasn’t an issue for her.

Others would waste their time crawling along the walls until they got to the window. Not her. She had a much faster way.

Summoning her energy, she willed the air beneath her feet to solidify into almost tiny stepping platforms.

With a balance borne from years of practice, she skipped over them, crossing the gap. The blue glow of her power flickering faintly with each step before fading the moment her foot lifted.

Reaching Ren’s window, she pressed a hand against the latch, gently manipulating the lock with a thin strip of energy through the crack in the window. With a faint click, it unlocked.

She pushed the window open and slipped inside without a sound, landing lightly on the wooden floor.

Just as she’d expected, the room was dark, but unlike she’d expected, Ren was nowhere to be found.

She narrowed her eyes. Where are you, Ren?

With a soft hum, she crossed the room, her fingers trailing over the desk, over the sprawl of books on it, and scattered notes.

Ren had specifically gone to bed early. That much, everybody knew. He’d cut their time at supper together short to get in some sleep, so where was he? Why was his bed empty? Why did it look like nobody had used it tonight?

Was he…?

No. She wouldn’t jump to conclusions. But even with that, images came unbidden in her mind. But she’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

She moved to sit on the bed, crossing one leg over the other.

She would wait for him.

And when he returned, she would get her answers.

In Steadfast, unaware of what was happening back at the inn, Ren and Thorn crouched atop a distant rooftop, their eyes fixed on a heavily fortified compound.

It wasn’t the size of the place that made it intimidating. It was the care that had been placed into it to await them.

While the place was large, a compound in the Inner city with lots of space, the fortifications were something else.

The walls were lined with torches, guard posts stationed at regular intervals, and patrols moving in tight formation. The third Swordsman had really fortified himself well.

"This is worse than the last place." Thorn muttered, adjusting his grip on the hilt of his dagger. "Walls, guards, even a damned watchtower. Our last two jobs were not exactly easy but this? This is a fortress."

Ren pursed his lips in thought. "The third Swordsman knows we’re coming. He wouldn’t be hiding somewhere this secure otherwise."

Thorn studied the movements of the patrols below. "So what’s the play? We sneak in? Too risky. Even if we manage to get inside, we’ll be fighting a small army."

Ren shook his head. "We don’t sneak in. We make them come out."

Thorn raised an eyebrow. "You planning to announce ourselves at the front door?"

Ren smirked. "Not quite."

He pulled out a coin, flipping it and catching it. "If we can’t get through the walls, we make them worthless. We’re going to set the whole place on fire."

Thorn blinked. "Oh, well. That’s certainly lowkey."

Ren shrugged. "We don’t need to be quiet this time. We need chaos. All we need to do is something big enough to force the Swordsman out. And when he’s out, we strike."

Thorn rubbed his chin. "Alright, I’ll admit, I like the idea of making a fortress useless. But how exactly are we going to torch the whole place without them just shutting it down? They’re certainly not going to wait for the fire to grow."

"Don’t worry about that." Ren grinned. "I’ll take care of it. Now that we know where they are, we’ll attack tomorrow during day time. Right when they least expect it."

Thorn whistled in approval. "You sure do like dramatic entrances."

Ren smirked. "Only when they work."

They spent the next hour watching the guards, mapping the rotations, noting weak spots in the patrols. The longer they studied, the more confident Ren became in their plan.

Finally, satisfied, he turned to Thorn. "Let’s head back."

With their plan finalized, they teleported back to the inn. The moment Ren’s boots touched the wooden floor of his room, he felt it.

He straightened instantly, his hand going to the hilt of his dagger.

And then, a soft voice filled the quiet air.

"Took you long enough."

Ren turned toward the bed, his eyes going wide as he took in the sight of Lilith sitting there, her legs crossed, her expression calm yet unmistakably expectant.

Thorn muttered under his breath. "Oh. Well, this should be interesting."

Ren sighed. This was not part of the plan.
