The grand ballroom of the royal palace shimmered under the glow of hundreds of enchanted lanterns, their soft golden light spilling across the gleaming floors.

The air was filled with the scent of fresh flowers, perfumes, and hiding beneath it all like a thief was the faint traces of fine wine.

The King’s Ball had officially begun, marking the start of the tournament festivities, and the hall was already filled with nobles dressed in their finest silks and coats, engaged in conversation, dancing, and quiet scheming.

The herald at the entrance stepped forward as Ren and Lilith approached.

"Announcing Lady Lilith Underwood of House Underwood and Lord Terence Ross of House Ross."

Heads turned, and whispers spread throughout the ballroom. It seems like Lilith was infamous among the nobles.

Lilith barely acknowledged the attention, gliding into the room gracefully, while Ren followed beside her, scanning the crowd with a smile pasted on his face.

He hadn’t expected to see the King himself or the highest-ranking nobles present but the room was practically empty of anyone truly important.

This ball was likely meant for the lesser houses, a means to keep them entertained while the real players convened elsewhere in private chambers.

Then at the final ball of the whole festivities, they’ll come out of whatever hole they’d gathered in.

Still, the room was full of nobility.

Some, Ren recognized from their house crests, while others were unfamiliar. They made their way further in, exchanging obligatory nods with passing nobles, but Ren had no interest in meaningless small talk.

Unfortunately for them, just by attending, Lilith immediately became the center of attention.

Several young lords approached her, requesting a dance, each attempt met with the same cool rejection. She didn’t even offer them an excuse, just a simple "no" before turning back to Ren.

"You’re really not going to let anyone else dance with you?" Ren asked, smirking slightly.

Lilith lifted her chin. "Why should I?"

"Isn’t it polite?"

"I don’t care about being polite. I care about you."

Ren chuckled. "So, I’m the only one getting the honor, huh?"

Lilith nodded, smiling slightly. "Obviously. Now, are you going to keep talking, or are you going to dance with me?"

Ren sighed in mock defeat. "Well, since you insist."

He took her hand and led her onto the dance floor, slipping into position just as the musicians struck up a soft melody. The dance was slow, and for a moment, Ren allowed himself to simply exist in the moment, ignoring the many eyes watching them.

Lilith danced like she’d been doing it her whole life, her movements graceful and confident.

Ren matched her steps, keeping pace as they turned across the ballroom floor. Unfettered Enhancement worked overtime in the background, preventing him from making a single mistake.

As they danced, Lilith smirked up at him, clearly enjoying the way his focus was entirely on her. "You’re a good dancer." She mused.

"I had to be." Ren replied. "Nobility values appearances. My mother made sure I learned."

Lilith hummed. "Then I suppose I should thank her."

Before Ren could respond, the moment was interrupted.

"May I cut in?"

The voice was confident, and unmistakably familiar.

Gwen Hart stood beside them, dressed in a deep navy gown that complemented her silver-blonde hair. A playful smirk tugged at her lips as she extended a hand toward Ren.

Lilith’s entire demeanor changed in an instant.

"No." She said, voice cutting.

Gwen raised an eyebrow, her smirk widening slightly. "Oh? I wasn’t speaking to you."

Lilith’s grip on Ren’s hand tightened. "And I wasn’t asking you. The answer is no."

Ren sighed inwardly. Here we go.

Gwen tilted her head, feigning curiosity. "Come now, Lady Underwood, surely you aren’t so possessive that you’d deny your fiance a simple dance?"

Ren opened his mouth to speak and decline Gwen’s request himself but before he could, Lilith’s eyes flashed dangerously.

"I don’t owe you an explanation." She almost snarled, her eyes narrowed. "He’s dancing with me. That’s all you need to know."

A few nearby nobles had turned their attention to the exchange, sensing the fight brewing between the two women. Ren opened his mouth again to interject, but Gwen, however, seemed to enjoy stoking the fire.

"It’s fascinating." She smirked. "You act as if you’re afraid he’ll slip away if you let him go for even a moment. It’s almost... insecure."

Lilith’s jaw tightened. "Watch your words, Lady Hart."

Gwen’s smirk didn’t move an inch. "Why? Do they sting?"

Ren placed a hand on Lilith’s waist, subtly grounding her. "Lilith."

Lilith didn’t look at him, her entire focus locked onto Gwen. The air around them crackled, as if there was electricity in the air.

Gwen’s expression was composed, but Ren saw it. The way she watched Lilith, measuring her reaction, seeing just how far she could push before Lilith snapped.

And Lilith was on the edge.

If he kept relying on trying to get a word in, this could turn into a disaster even he could not control. So, he decided to remove them from the danger zone entirely.

He gently pulled Lilith toward him, breaking her line of sight from Gwen. "Let’s go."

Lilith resisted for half a second, still glaring at Gwen, but then Ren leaned in slightly, his voice softer. "Come on, love. Don’t give her what she wants."

That made Lilith pause. She inhaled sharply through her nose, her fingers curling against Ren’s sleeve before she finally relented.

She turned without another word, allowing Ren to lead her away from the dance floor, away from Gwen’s smirking face, and away from the gathering crowd of curious onlookers.

Once they were a safe distance away, Lilith exhaled sharply, pressing her fingers to her temple. "I should’ve hit her."

"You shouldn’t have." Ren corrected gently. "That’s what she wanted."

Lilith scoffed. "You saw her! She was provoking me on purpose!"

Ren sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Yeah, I noticed. But, Lilith, we’re at the King’s Ball. You know what would’ve happened if you attacked her?"

Lilith huffed. "I would’ve felt better."

Ren chuckled despite himself. "I have no doubt about that. But you didn’t. Which means we won’t have to soothe bruised egos or be charged with disturbing the king’s peace or something like that."

"And right now, that’s what matters."

Lilith crossed her arms, clearly still fuming. "She thinks she can take you from me."

Ren tilted his head. "And can she?"

Lilith snapped her gaze up at him, glaring. "Obviously not!"

Ren smirked. "Then there’s nothing to worry about."

Lilith pursed her lips, her frustration still simmering, but Ren could tell she was calming down. He reached for her hand, intertwining their fingers.

"You won, Lilith." He murmured. "You always do. So, there’s no need to turn it into a fight."

Lilith’s shoulders relaxed just slightly. She looked up at him, eyes still burning with an intensity he recognized, but there was something softer beneath it.

"You’re mine, Ren Ross." She said firmly.

Ren smiled. "I know."

Lilith exhaled, then leaned into his shoulder, her fingers still gripping his hand.

Ren glanced back toward the dance floor, where Gwen was watching them from a distance, a knowing look in her eyes.

This wasn’t over. But for tonight, Ren had diffused the fire.

For now.
