Chapter 34: Stage 2 Lockdown

"Listen... Elene, thanks for your concerns at all, but you really should be going, it’s going to be starting soon." He turned his attention to the door.

"Huh? I don’t understand, what’s going to be starting soon?"

This was the exact moment he was waiting for.

The event he trained and developed his new technique for, his survival hinged on this very moment.

He closed his eyes, then took a deep breath.

After a few seconds, his eyes shot open with intent. "Here it comes."

Almost immediately, a blinding light flashed through the sky and shook even the association itself.

Elene was knocked off balance by the shockwave that smashed through the walls. "What was that!?"

She stood to her feet immediately and rushed over to the broken walls and there it was.

"W—What is that..." Her eyes shot open in disbelief.

At a distance, it was visible even from the Soul-Hunter’s association.

It was an Orange gate.

An orange gate was different from the other types of gates. Unlike the yellow gate and black gate, the contents of an orange gate was unknown.

And after the beast that emerged from it weeks ago, it was safe to say it harboured some of the most dangerous kinds of Soul-Beasts.

The alarms of the association went off, and red lights blinked in a continuous intervals as the head commander issued the code red protocol.

The code red protocol was used in situations that required captain level Soul-Hunters to investigate.

As such, every activity was paused. Until the crisis had been averted, and the gate closed, it was dangerous to even considering resuming the exams.

"Rai, what’s happening... Why is there a gate here? And what’s with the color scheme?" She fell to her butt, her eyes wavered from the sight of it alone.

He couldn’t blame her, to her and probably several newly awakened Soul-Hunters, an orange gate was treated like an X-rank Soul-Hunter.

An Unidentified Phenomenon.

So the energy it gave off was startling.

"Just stay here." He jumped down from the hole in the wall, and he rushed towards the orange gate immediately.

"Wait! Rai!" It was too late, at the speed he was moving, there was no way he could hear her.

She immediately rushed out of the hall to get help, she wasn’t about to let him kill himself just because he managed to obtain a Dual-Core.

As she ran out of the door, she bumped into Xander.

"Watch where you’re going." He didn’t flinch, didn’t move from his spot. His voice was a bit cold from the confusions and anger that tugged at the corner of his mind.

"S-Sorry." She patted her garment.

"We are in a stage 2 lockdown, where are you off to in such a hurry?"

"Um." She didn’t know what to tell Xander considering she saw Rai as his friend. Plus, considering what happened during his match, she still had goosebumps from the kind of power he displayed.

"It’s Rai, an Orange gate appeared a distance away from the Soul-Hunter’s association and he ran towards it. I tried to stop him... But he was too fast."

Xander’s eyes shot open, and the realization came to him. An Orange gate? That was exactly the phenomenon that Reb told him about after he was healed, and it was also a huge factor that helped in Rai’s reawakening, or so he believed.

"That bastard..." He sprinted into the medical room and saw the hole torn into the wall by the gate’s appearance, and also the gate visible from a distance.

"I won’t let you pull one over on me ever again." He felt threatened. He was supposed to lead the team appointed by the goddess, but with each defiance Rai made, he only got stronger.

And his growth proved his words back then, and he wasn’t going to let that happen again.

He jumped through the hole in the wall, and landed on his feet with a soft thud, then sprinted towards the gate.

"H-Hey! Where the hell are you going!?" She exhaled heavily. "Those damn fools..." She looked back at the door, then gritted her teeth before jumping out of the hole as well. She ran right behind Xander, then all of a sudden, he stopped right in front of the gate.

Elene stopped just in time, and controlled her momentum before she could bump into him. "Don’t just stop like that!" She panted softly, she had no idea why she chose to go after them.

Yet she did.

All her life, she lived a life full of rules and protocols. Nobles were the ambassadors of the kingdom, and that meant representing it. A lot was expected from them, a high quantity of Soul-Energy, to be strong and disciplined enough to be part of a Soul-Squad.

In a word, it was boring to her.

"W-Whoa..." For a moment, Xander’s anger and confusion subsided as he felt the raw, primal energy that seeped out from the Orange gate.

For something that became natural overtime, it was unnatural and worst of all, it was unpredictable.

They both froze as they stared at the gate.

Almost as if they were paralyzed by it’s raw power, then they snapped out of it, and Xander immediately realized that he was followed and glanced over at her. "What are you doing here?"

"I’m not going to let you both get yourselves killed because of some grudge."

"Whatever. Do what you want, but don’t be a burden to me." He replied disdainfully.

"Burden? Last I checked, I am a B-rank Soul-Hunter. You might be an A-rank Soul-Hunter, but my Soul-Core is more developed than yours, placing us at the same level." She stared back at the gate. "What kind of beasts do you think will be inside this unidentified dungeon?"

"Only one way to find out."

Without wasting another moment, the two of them stepped through the gate. On the other side, they emerged into a completely different world, surrounded by trees, and a forest that felt almost like a wild jungle.

"Where are we..."
