Extra's Re-awakening: System Errors Made Me Too OP-Chapter 54: The Pride Of The 14th
The two teams —Team A, mostly made up of members from the 8th Soul-Squad, and Team B, made up of members from the 14th Soul-Squad, set out on their mission. The village chief and his companions moved deeper into the village with both teams. At this point, the fog had yet to return, giving them a much clearer path through the village.
The villagers? They were safely locked inside their homes. The fog could appear at any time, without warning. It was an unpredictable supernatural event, with no set duration for how long it would last.
"So... , I really have to know. Why did you join the 14th Soul-Squad?" Elene asked, all ears perked up, and everyone waited eagerly for Kaira’s answer.
Even the captain of the 14th Soul-Squad patiently waited for her answer given it was his squad involved. It was a rare, almost once-in-a-lifetime event for someone of royal or noble blood to join a Soul-Squad run by commoners.
Usually, after passing the Soul-Hunter’s exam, such individuals were offered prestigious positions in higher-ranking squads, especially if they were a descendant of the head commander.
Elene was a noble, just like Kaira, so communicating with her was easy. She didn’t have the same difficulties as she did with the other members of the 14th Soul-Squad..
In response, Kaira briefly glanced at Rai. He, however, was lost in thought, focused on other matters. Especially the untimely arrival of the Primordial Demons.
She turned her gaze back to Elene, a gentle smile spreading softly across her face. "I emerged from the Soul-Hunter’s examination with a perfect score of 100, but not even that got my father’s attention. But it was a D-rank Soul-Hunter that got his attention, or rather an unidentified Soul-Hunter, so now I’m curious." She replied.
"Curious? Curious about what?" Elene added, she knew it. She could tell just from Kaira’s glance that she had joined for the same reason she had, both were curious about Rai’s unexplained growth.
"Commoners, they are said to possess the lowest Soul-Energy amongst the human race. However based on the results of the exams, that theory was proven wrong. Now I’m curious, and now I want to see for myself if that’s true." Kaira replied to her question, her eyes casually resting on the oblivious Soul-Hunter.
"You should always follow your instincts Kaira, for in battle your ability to follow your instincts is a prerequisite to victory. A Soul-Hunter’s perspective is another’s reality." Misa chimed in, sharing her battle experience while keeping her eyes fixed on Rai, who remained completely oblivious.
"There you go again with your off point theories, what the hell are you talking about?" Kazuki asked, completely missing the point of her words, as he exhaled a puff of smoke from his mouth.
"Honestly." Misa replied with a heavy sigh.
After walking for a while, they arrived at the town square. It was the center of the village, where messages were exchanged and the busiest marketplace usually thrived. Now, however, it was completely deserted with no one in sight.
In the center of the town square stood a large, spiraling silver gate, resting silently as if waiting for something to happen.
"So this is the B-rank dungeon huh." Rai said under his breath.
"Village chief, how long has this it been since this dungeon appeared?" Misa asked.
"Almost two weeks." The village chief replied in awe, his voice trembling slightly as he spoke. His village had faced countless hardships ever since the appearance of the dungeon.
"Two weeks? The hell? Misa, we have to close this dungeon and fast."
"Agreed, but one more thing." She turned her back immediately, searching through the crowd for a specific individual. "Xander." She called out to him.
"Yes captain."
"Stay back with the 14th Soul-Squad and watch over the gate, Lucy, you’ll come in his place, the rest of you let’s go." She ordered. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂
"What!? Why do I have to stay behind!?" He asked furiously.
"Because this is an B-rank dungeon."
"Which is exactly why you all need my help!"
"That’s exactly why you need to stay behind, if we can’t contain what’s in there, you, Kaira and the 14’s captain will be the second to the last line of defense. Now am I clear?" With a firm voice, she gave her order, her expression darkening in frustration at his refusal to comply.
"Tsk... Yes captain.".
"Good, the rest of you, let’s move." On her order, they rushed into the gate quickly, an ominous sound oozing through the environment as each Soul-Hunter rushed into the gate including Lucy and Elene.
"She’s as commanding as ever, come on you damned brats, let’s move." As Kazuki spoke, the remaining Soul-Hunters followed behind him, including Xander, who couldn’t shake off the strong feeling of annoyance building inside him.
"So how does it feel? First time raiding a dungeon?" Ken asked, walking besides Rai and Aiden.
’Well it’s not exactly my first time.’ Rai thought. "It isn’t as exciting as I thought." He replied.
"Exciting?" Ken burst out laughing.
"You must have a death wish if you think raiding an A-rank dungeon is exciting. In this kind of dungeons, it’s even more unpredictable than the rest, so be ready for anything." With a slight chuckle, Aiden added, his voice carrying a mix of amusement and sarcasm.
"I wouldn’t worry about me, worry about not embarrassing yourself in front of two nobles."
"Huh? What did you say you unidentified bastard? Underestimating me will be your biggest mistake!"
"Shut the up! You damned brats!" Kazuki sighed deeply, exhaling a puff of smoke before glancing toward the direction of the gate.
"Look sharp boys and girl, We’ve got something." As Kazuki spoke, a faint cloud of smoke began to rise from the ground. Within minutes, the entire village square was shrouded in thick white mist.
"Don’t waver, get ready for battle!" He said, ordering all hunters under him to stay vigilant.
"Shit... It appeared out of nowhere." Ken said, waving his hands in an attempt to clear the mist.
"I can’t see a thing!" Aiden exclaimed.
Rai’s eyes twitched, and he turned around immediately. "Someone is here." He and Kaira said in sync, sensing the presence of a mysterious figure whose energy surfaced the very moment the fog appeared.
"Yeah..." Kazuki agreed.
"Damn it, I thought I’d sit this one out and watch you idiots fight." He unsheathed his sword, coated it with his Soul-Energy, and with a powerful step forward, dashed through the fog in a single swift strike. It felt as though his blade was cutting through a thick, heavy fabric.
In just a few seconds, the fog around them vanished, swept away by the powerful pressure released from his blade.
"A—Awesome..." Kaira muttered under her breath. "He cleared out the entire fog just by swinging a sword?"
"That’s Captain Kazuki for you!" Ken exclaimed, completely enthusiastic about his squad’s captain.
’So this is the power of the 14th Soul-Squad captain?’ Rai thought.
’There’s no one here?’ Kazuki thought as he sheathed his sword. He was certain he had sensed a strong presence within the fog, yet now that it was gone, there was no sign of anyone at all.
"Yo." Kaira’s eyes widened the moment she heard a voice right behind her. Almost instantly, an overwhelming presence swept over her, pressing down on her like a heavy wave. "How’d you figure us out?"
SWOOSH!
In an instant, Ren, Aiden, and Rai vanished from where they stood. The air around them rippled faintly, and before anyone could react, the three reappeared. Ken on the left, Aiden on the right, and Rai behind the mysterious man, with their respective weapons in hand.
Ren, he held a small blade in hand, for Aiden, he held an ice sword and Rai, one set of the twin Stormfangs.
"Oh?" The mysterious man’s brows twitched as his eyes shifted slowly toward the three boys who had surrounded him in the blink of an eye. There was no panic in his gaze, only calm curiosity, as if he was studying them rather than feeling threatened.
Kaira fell to the ground, her eyes trembling in disbelief. Though she was considered far stronger, she froze completely in the face of danger. The three commoners? They reacted without hesitation, without fear.
It made her question her experience and pride as a noble, in the face of danger, she wasn’t as prepared as she thought. Especially against someone far stronger than her.
"Let me tell you something about us kid." Kazuki said, referring to Kaira as he stepped forward slowly, releasing a calm puff of smoke.
"Those idiots might have not been blessed with Soul-Energy like you noblemen, but that didn’t stop us, we worked our muscles to the core, sacrificed our blood to achieve so little. That’s the difference between us, being talentless isn’t our weakness, it’s our strength. We never run from danger, we’ll never give up, and we’ll never abandon our comrades either. That’s the 14th Soul-Squad."
