Extra's Strategy: Cultivate Protagonists, Become Invincible-Chapter 190: Damaged Body, Confused Soul
Chapter 190: Damaged Body, Confused Soul
"Are you sure you ’just fell on a rock’ and your knee just shattered like this? The cracks in your ribcage and spine also formed from this one fall?"
The kind-looking healer, while applying a greasy medicinal fluid on his legs, asked the same question using different words for the eleventh time.
"Why wouldn’t I be sure? It’s my body!"
The healer signed ruefully and patted gently under his numb kneecap as she said, "Young lads and their egos... Tch~ I hope I don’t have to see you again a week after your knee is healed. Don’t duel people you can’t defeat."
As she left the cabin, Xiao Wu gave Han Xuhan an impressed look.
"Brother Xuhan, I didn’t expect that someone with your personality would not rat out an enemy at the first chance."
Unable to walk over and smack the oaf with something heavy, Han Xuhan could only snarl at him from the bed.
"What the hell do you mean by that, Xiao Wu? Are you calling me a rat?"
Coughing awkwardly, Xiao Wu tried to do some damage control.
"I mean, you’re not exactly the type to silently grind until you’re strong enough to take revenge by yourself. You have a more flexible personality..."
"Xiao Wu," Han Xuhan interrupted him midway, his annoyance palpable. "Get the hell out of my cabin."
"Damn! It wasn’t me who broke your leg! Why are you taking your frustration out on me?"
"I’m not taking out my frustration on you. I just want to talk to Sister Zhou in private for a moment."
Xiao Wu’s eyes narrowed as he gazed between Han Xuhan and Xuanyuan Zhou a couple of times. Then, as if an idea had just been born in his mind, his eyes lit up.
"Hehehe! I was right, wasn’t I? You didn’t want to name your attackers in front of the Healer Elder. But you’re going to tell Sister Zhou! Is it because of your special relationship? Or is it because you want her to take revenge on your behalf?"
Han Xuhan let out a deep sigh. Xiao Wu always gave off the impression of silly oaf around others. It was to the point where Han Xuhan would frequently forget how sharp he actually was.
"Might as well stay here, then. Watch the door and make sure nobody’s listening," he said. Xiao Wu grinned like a simple-minded fool as he shut the door and rubbed his palms together, eager to hear the story.
With a bit of effort, Han Xuhan turned to face Xuanyuan Zhou, who was sitting on the visitor’s chair with an aloof, cold expression. She had arrived in the cabin with Xiao Wu half an hour ago, but she hadn’t spoken a word since then.
"Is something on your mind, Martial Sister?" he asked, just to make sure she was even paying attention. The detached look on her face shifted a little at the pointed question.
"Brother Wu was correct, then? You don’t want the sect authorities to take disciplinary actions against whoever attacked you?"
Sensing the extra coldness in her tone, Han Xuhan became puzzled. What was up with her now?
"If you’re going to tell us the story, first you need to make it clear why. Is it because you want us to help you take revenge privately?"
"Sounds like you’re not on board with that plan," Han Xuhan muttered dryly.
"Why would I be? A martial artist whom I’ve personally trained needs me to take revenge for him? Are you trying to disgrace this lady’s name?"
"...."
Han Xuhan and Xiao Wu exchanged a quick look of exasperated confusion. They were familiar with the situations where Xuanyuan Zhou started referring to herself in the third person. None of those situations ever ended on a positive note for the target of her fury.
"It’s already humiliating enough that you lost so terribly that it almost left you crippled. It doesn’t even seem like you managed to deal some damage back to your opponent.
"Whoever they were, the strength they were using on you is mediocre. Is this the standard of the martial artist I’ve trained? If you’re not physically capable, at least show some mental fortitude! How could you ask me to go beat them up?"
"Technically, I haven’t asked you to do anything yet," Han Xuhan said, hoping to lighten the mood seeing how the veins on her temples were pulsing.
"This isn’t a joking matter!" Xuanyuan Zhou started berating him, getting way too comfortable in her role as his martial arts master. Her frosty countenance showed no signs of thawing.
"You’ll get your revenge by yourself. And you better get it using the Martial moves I’m teaching you! They must experience each and every injury they gave you before they’re allowed to apologize! I want to see it with my own eyes."
Turning around, she kicked the chair out of her way and slammed the door of the cabin open, frightening both Han Xuhan and Xiao Wu so much that they didn’t dare to make a noise until the sound of her footsteps disappeared from the hallway outside.
"...You know, I still can’t tell what the relationship between you two is."
Han Xuhan wanted to kick something too, preferably Xiao Wu’s head. Maybe that would make his mind move in a proper direction for once. Unfortunately, even walking normally was impossible with the state his body was in.
After the healer returned, they got to know that he’d have to stay bedridden for the night.... Unless of course, he could afford some expensive medicine.
Ordinarily, Han Xuhan wouldn’t have minded the delay of normal healing procedures. It was just a matter of one night. But every time his mind wandered back to the incident that had put him in this cabin, something sparked to life in his body and mind, something that didn’t want him to sit still.
This sensation was rather alien to him. This wasn’t the first time he had faced violence. Back on Earth, which grassroots level politician hadn’t gotten into trouble in the streets? From light humiliation to escaping mob lynching, he had been through it all.
Naturally, someone with such experience should not be losing their head after being bullied by a group of immature kids. He didn’t even see them as targets of revenge. He only saw four brats who needed to be taught a life lesson.
Yet, he still felt an anger burning inside him like an undying ball of fire.
Was it his body? Maybe the hormones and the remnant memories of the original owner of his body were influencing his personality?
This wasn’t the first time he had noticed the psychological shift in himself. But it wasn’t as if he could do anything about it.
...Or, could he?
Turning to Xiao Wu, who was about to leave, Han Xuhan threw a stone in the dark.
"Brother Wu, you know that I have the memories of my previous life. It’s not something unheard of. But when it comes to the practical implications of being in such a situation, there isn’t much to sift through in the Archives of our sect."
Xiao Wu stood at the doorway with a befuddled look on his face. "What are you trying to say, brother Xuhan?"
"I’m asking if you have some idea about the practical aspects of having two sets of memories in one body. That’s like having two entirely different personalities. Do they mix together and turn into something new? Or does one side dominate and remove the other side’s influence on what the body thinks or does?"
Xiao Wu scratched the back of his head furiously for a few seconds before replying, "If one side has a spiritual presence that far outweighs the other side, then naturally, it can dominate the shared body. You have to understand that a large part of a soul’s strength comes from its memories.
"So the memories of an expert cultivator who has lived for two or three centuries will have a very powerful presence compared to the memories of a fifteen-year-old kid. But this explanation is really not applicable to you, brother Xuhan."
Han Xuhan was about to ask why, but he managed to grasp the answer by himself before opening his mouth.
Neither set of his memories belonged to a cultivator with a refined soul or a strong spiritual presence. The age gap couldn’t be a factor either, because he didn’t have a long life back on Earth. He had younger siblings as old as his current body.
"Why are you suddenly concerned about this, Xuhan?" Xiao Wu asked, noticing his deep frown.
"I keep feeling like my body is being influenced by a side of me that I’d rather not have acting up during troublesome situations. I was wondering if there was a way to restrain that part of my personality."
Xiao Wu thought for a moment before offering a tentative suggestion.
"Sometimes spiritual disturbances can be caused if there are unresolved situations left in your memories. You could try to fulfill any intense wishes of that side of your personality. It’s a bit like exorcising ghosts in folklore."
Han Xuhan’s eyes lit up. That was actually an excellent idea!
The original owner of his current body might have some unfinished business left somewhere in this world. If he could satiate that wish, maybe it could diminish its presence inside his consciousness!
If this plan worked out, he, Hans Schwann, would become the complete and absolute entity controlling this body.
