Chapter 93: Naked And Afraid

After a brief discussion, Han Xuhan and Qian Yun had come up with a rough plan.

Since this was only the second stage of the inheritance test, and judging by the three types of orbs visible inside the foggy area, there was likely to be a third stage of the test too, it would be best to not rush forward.

So they had slowly explored their way deeper, doing their best to avoid other cultivators. Han Xuhan wasn’t particularly interested in the inheritance, and he doubted if it even existed.

Qian Yun wasn’t powerful enough to take on opponents all by himself. It was a mystery how so many wandering cultivators had been attracted to this world fragment. They noticed signs of fierce battles all over the place.

Broken armors, bloodstained bandages, and abandoned weapons... Han Xuhan scavenged through the aftermath of these battles for useful items, and so far, he had gathered several items of his favorite category—explosives.

The most important clue that had made them certain of their conjectures were the law fragments hastily engraved on any flat surface available to the wandering cultivators.

They had even found multiple fist-sized orbs that resembled the emerald spheres shining in the fog. By examining the thick qi inside the orbs and the recently used law fragments, their understanding of this stage had been refreshed.

After nearly an hour or so, Han Xuhan had heard a familiar voice not far away from their position.

Mu Ran?

Why the hell was he still lurking here? That guy had reached the second stage more than six hours ago!

Regardless, Han Xuhan was elated that he had finally found that guy. At least his own safety could somewhat be guaranteed as long as Mu Ran was around.

One bodyguard is good. Two bodyguards are better!

After explaining to Qian Yun who they were about to meet, an excited Han Xuhan ran toward the source of the commotion.

Perhaps it was his fortune that he was too weak to sprint as fast as Qian Yun. The battle Mu Ran was embroiled in ended with a Mystic Art attack powerful enough to send a spiritual shockwave nearly a hundred yards away.

Qian Yun fell to the ground with a groan, while Han Xuhan only felt a heavy wave of nausea. Mu Ran’s targets weren’t so lucky, being hit by the brunt of the attack.

The two unconscious cultivators were lying on the ground, about to fall unconscious. Their aura was as unstable as a messed up qi cycle, implying deep spiritual damage.

Yelling at Mu Ran to not attack again, Han Xuhan hit the nearest guy with the shaft of his glaive to ensure that he wasn’t acting or anything.

"Underling Xuhan! How did you get here?"

Mu Ran lost his composure and hurriedly strode over.

"Treat this guy first. He’s my bodygu- I mean, my ally. Our ally!"

Mu Ran knelt over Qian Yun’s crumpled form and jabbed at what seemed to be acupoints connected to the meridians. Qian Yun’s groans died down very quickly. The whole scene left Han Xuhan speechless.

Good heavens! Mu Ran was skilled in acupuncture as well? The author hadn’t held back while adding the tropes, had he?

"He’ll be fine in a few minutes," Mu Ran announced. "Now, answer the question, underling. How did YOU get here?"

"Ah well, the first stage wasn’t that hard, was it? I accidentally discovered how to decipher the texts and then just kind of winged it, ehehe...."

Han Xuhan grinned goofily as he gave his concerned boss a simple account of his experience.

Qian Yun gave him a grateful nod while Mu Ran wasn’t looking. If Han Xuhan had told Mu Ran that Qian Yun knew Mu Ran’s big secret, then Mu Ran might not have held much goodwill toward Qian Yun.

In a perilous place like this, trusting your back to someone like that was akin to walking around with unstable explosives.

Mu Ran’s suspicion was palpable when Han Xuhan finished his story. But that was understandable. Han Xuhan decided to avert his suspicion with the good old bootlicking art.

"Ah, boss, the rest of us aren’t as knowledgeable as you. I heard you solved the first stage within one hour and left everyone feeling jealous!"

"What one hour?" Mu Ran’s ego was hurt. "I did it in less than fifteen minutes!"

Han Xuhan struggled not to laugh out loud.

"I wish I could do anything remotely so cool, boss! But that was six hours ago. Why are you still here fighting for the emerald orbs?"

"These orbs?" Mu Ran held one of the fallen gem-like spheres up.

"As you might’ve realized already, they are valuable sources of power. In this inheritance test, there is a suspicious lack of treasures and rewards. So I thought I should collect everything I can get my hands on."

Hearing Mu Ran’s answer, one thought ran through Han Xuhan’s mind.

This guy was spewing bullshit again.

But he couldn’t point it out without admitting that he knew about Mu Ran’s ability to fuel his own law fragments by the sheer power of ’his’ soul.

Speaking of that, how long would it take for Mu Ran to realize what a blunder he had made back in the stadium? Hopefully, he’d overlook it...

"And who is this?" Mu Ran pointed at Qian Yun, who had just managed to sit up. A slight unease crept into his tone.

"This is Brother Qian Yun. He is a friend who helped me pass through the circle of laws. We can trust him, temporarily."

Mu Ran nodded as if he had understood everything now. No wonder little Xuhan could advance till here. He had managed to get a helper with a solid cultivation base! He could see through this masked stranger in one glance. fɾeewebnoveℓ.co๓

"I am glad to see that you can make such progress even without my help, underling. Now, Let’s go forward and finish this! We can talk on the way."

Mu Ran grabbed his rusty spear, while Han Xuhan went to rob the two unconscious fellows blind. He didn’t even let go of their clothes!

Not only was this a good method to disguise everyone’s original identity, but it was also his way of doing these two a favor.

All he left for them was a law fragment on the ground, powered by a half-empty emerald orb. After waking up, they’d find themselves naked... and afraid.

Would they still dare to venture deeper into the fog? Hahahaha!
