Fairy, Don't Be Afraid, I Am Blind-Chapter 43 - 37: Junior Sister, Will You Go With Me?
Sheng Ziling was frozen as if struck by an immobilization skill, remaining stiff for quite a while. When he finally came to, the first thing he did was, tremblingly, turn his head toward his master sitting at the side of the arena.
The Sect Leader of the Wind Thunder Fist Sect looked very displeased.
Sheng Ziling strained hard to make expressions; he wanted to speak out in his own defense, seemingly trying to convey silently that the fight wasn’t as everyone saw it—that the blind man caught him off guard and attacked sneakily, utterly disregarding martial ethics, and that the opponent should be directly judged as losing.
Yet he was tongue-tied, saying nothing at all.
Sheng Ziling turned his head to look at the scabbard You Su had put down, feeling increasingly hopeless about his future cultivation path in the sect. His gaze grew ever more venomous. He lacked the courage to strike, but his Adam’s apple churned; he wanted to spit out the filthiest words and use the dirtiest terms to insult this person who seemed indifferent to everything.
In an instant, the Mo Song Sword was once again against Sheng Ziling’s neck, but this time it was the cold blade rather than the scabbard.
"If I cut here, you won’t die, but you’ll be mute. So, do you still want to curse?"
You Su lightly held the sword hilt, with no hint of threat in his tone.
The spectators at the side inhaled sharply, not expecting You Su would dare to make a move even after the match concluded.
The Sect Leader of the Wind Thunder Fist Sect was so furious he immediately stood up, smashing the armrests of the wooden chair with his powerful hands.
"You Su! What do you think you’re doing?"
Mr. Liou sent forth a wave of energy to soothe the angry, robust old man, and leisurely spoke to You Su in the arena, saying:
"You Su, put down your weapon; the sparring is over, don’t lose control."
Upon hearing this, You Su smiled faintly, withdrew the Mo Song Sword, and as he did, his wrist subtly moved, leaving a barely noticeable blood mark on Sheng Ziling’s neck.
"Forgive me, Mr. Liou. It’s my misunderstanding. Seeing Mr. Sheng’s stance, I thought he was still unsatisfied."
Sheng Ziling didn’t hear what You Su was saying; he was caught up in the sting from the exceedingly faint blood mark. He had a sensation that if necessary, the blind man truly would turn him into a mute, or even a cold body lying in a coffin.
A wave of dread spread from his feet, and he realized his pants felt somewhat warm and damp. How familiar was this feeling of incontinence? When was the last time?
He remembered—it was when he was twelve years old and out shopping with his master. He fancied a jade ring that had just been bought by a woman. That woman was leading a blind child, who, though disheveled, was slightly taller than his robust master. Somehow, the master and the woman began to argue.
While it was called a fight, it was actually the master being single-handedly beaten. His master’s highly esteemed boxing skills were pulverized by that woman’s fists, but wasn’t that woman the Sect Leader of the Sword Sect?
After beating the master, the woman looked at him coldly. It was the first time he saw such an expression, and the first time he saw his godlike master in such a sorry state that he was scared into wetting himself when the woman approached threateningly.
But the woman paid him no mind; the blind child beside him passed by, nibbling on his fingers, and blankly said to the woman:
"Master, this smell is really stinky, huh?"
The woman burst into laughter, clutching her belly.
This incident stuck with him to this day. He had thought that the woman left, his master had broken through, and he himself had become stronger; the feeling of fear and embarrassment would never appear again. Yet, unexpectedly, that blind child from back then had come to remind him.
"So stinky, huh."
You Su fastened the Mo Song Sword, pinched his nose, and left the venue.
Meanwhile, the burly man in the arena, his white robe and pants growing ever deeper in color, lay desolate on the ground amidst the ceaseless laughter from the sidelines, face completely ashen.
Gu Yao watched You Su’s back disappear into the crowd from afar, eyes glowing with light.
...
Night fell.
You Su still bought chestnut chicken, and, of course, a variety of blood-nourishing foods such as red bean porridge, black fungus, and brown sugar water.
Ji Lingruo dressed simply, with a loose coat-and-skirt ensemble hiding her delicate curves; her complexion had recovered some redness, her skin was flawless, seemingly more lustrous than ever.
She looked at the spread of dishes, a mix of delight and speechlessness.
The two quietly picked at the food, the atmosphere surprisingly somber.
"Hey, what were you doing today?" Ji Lingruo glanced at the fungus put into her bowl by her senior brother, pursing her lips.
"Went to the City Lord’s mansion to handle some matters." You Su also picked up a couple of chopsticks’ worth of fungus and said, "Eat more fungus; it replenishes energy and blood."
Ji Lingruo stirred her chopsticks. She inherently disliked fungus, but due to an excuse about menstrual blood, her senior brother bought this big plate and forced her to eat it, feeling slightly helpless.
"If you want to eat it, eat it yourself. Didn’t you say you love black fungus?"
"I’m touched that my junior sister remembers what I love to eat. But it’s not black fungus I love, it’s white fungus." You Su chuckled, sipping his porridge.
Ji Lingruo stuck out her fragrant little tongue, made a sneaky face, and then asked: "Why go to the City Lord’s mansion? Was it about that search last time?"
"No, the City Lord’s mansion had a distinguished guest; all Spirit Platform Realm cultivators in town had to go welcome them."
"What kind of guest is so prestigious?" 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶
"An outer sect manager of the Profound Sky Sect of Henggao Divine Mountain named Gu Yao. Why, do you know him, junior sister?"
"Tch, not that special. What’s he doing in Chuyun City?"
"Here to inspect the affiliated sect, and to select disciples to study at the Profound Sky Sect. But at least they have to be in the Spirit Platform Realm." You Su concealed the third task of Gu Yao. He didn’t want to mention the word "evil spirits" in front of his junior sister.
"Hey, doesn’t that mean you have a chance too?" Ji Lingruo’s beautiful eyes lit up.
"I guess. Do you want to go to the Divine Mountain, junior sister?" You Su asked tentatively.
Ultimately, taking junior sister and master to the Divine Mountain to dispel evil spirits was just his unilateral wish. Now wasn’t the time to come clean, and the current plan was to first bring them to the Divine Mountain. Then, in ensuring their salvation even when their consciousness returned, he could honestly share everything.
Ji Lingruo didn’t immediately respond. She seemed uncertain, lost in her thoughts:
"Do you want to go?"
"Me? I suppose I do." You Su raised his bowl, lowering his head, "If I manage to get this spot for studying, will junior sister be willing to go with me?"
"Of... of course I would." Ji Lingruo kept busy eating, seemingly hiding something, then added, "Who wouldn’t want to go to the Divine Mountain."
You Su sensed something was off but didn’t directly ask, assuming junior sister feared that her ’cursed’ self would become his burden:
"That’s good, I’ve saved a lot of money, so I can buy a house with a yard a bit outside Henggao City. During the day, I’ll attend lessons at the Divine Mountain; junior sister can sleep. At night, I’ll return to continue teaching junior sister swordsmanship. Once junior sister becomes strong, surely she’ll be eligible to study there too. We can write more stories; people in Henggao City are wealthy, and we’ll probably earn much more than in Chuyun City."
You Su dreamed of the future, while Ji Lingruo pointed out faults in his vision. As always, the two started to banter at the dinner table. The meal grew lively, yet no one saw the hint of hidden worry in the girl’s eyes.
