Chapter 67: Ch 67 : Fool

(One year ago)

The breath of early spring, with its faint floral fragrance, entered the world with a gentle breeze.

It was a season that was neither as scorching and stifling as summer nor as chilly and piercing as deep autumn.

The warm sunlight was incredibly comfortable and relaxing.

However, as soon as people relaxed, the laziness buried deep within their bones quietly emerged.

Especially for those who had no interest in studying, spring classrooms felt like a battleground against sleep.

The majority of students would find their eyelids gradually drooping, lower and lower, until they eventually closed their eyes, only to wake up in a daze and repeat the same motion again, over and over, until the class was over.

In the Rutherford family's clan academy, Nord sat in a corner, propping his chin up with his hand.

He was watching the teacher on stage passionately discussing magical knowledge, and the children of various ages, ranging from twelve to three, who were secretly napping in the seats below.

Watching the interaction between the two, a faint smile tugged at the corner of Nord's mouth.

Suddenly, someone sitting not far from Nord caught his attention.

It was a brown-haired child who was sprawled on the desk, fast asleep.

He drew Nord's attention not because he was particularly special, but because his behavior was rather reckless.

Unlike the other children, who would sleep in a very subtle manner even when dozing off, this brown-haired child sprawled his entire upper body on the desk without any care, completely relaxed, as if he didn't mind being caught by the teacher.

Even from his snoring mouth, a small amount of transparent liquid slowly dripped out.

(What an interesting guy... Is this unconscious behavior after falling asleep, or is he just naturally oblivious? But he'll get caught soon, right?)

Nord slightly squinted his sky-blue eyes, thinking to himself as he observed the brown-haired boy.

The wait didn't last long.

Within just a few minutes, Nord saw a piece of chalk imbued with a bit of magic fly at high speed from the teacher's desk and, with a loud bang, hit the brown-haired boy's head.

The boy's body jerked backward comically, and he fell hard from his chair.

"Who did that? Don't you know it's immoral to disturb someone's sleep?!"

The brown-haired boy immediately jumped up from the floor, shouting loudly, then scanned the room angrily.

"..." The entire classroom was silent for three full seconds before a burst of loud laughter erupted.

"Idiot." Nord suppressed his laughter and muttered softly.

At this point, the brown-haired boy realized what had happened.

Looking at the furious teacher on the stage, the boy's forehead immediately broke out in cold sweat.

"Hal!! Get up here and solve this problem on the blackboard, or you'll clean the entire classroom!" The teacher shouted angrily at the brown-haired boy.

"Ah, this... I..." The brown-haired boy's face immediately turned pale.

After all, the classroom was quite large. If it was just one person, not only would he not be able to go home, but even if he stayed up all night cleaning the entire classroom, it would be difficult to finish.

Seeing the boy's embarrassed expression, Nord shook his head and chuckled.

On a whim, he pulled out a piece of paper, wrote down the answer to the problem on the blackboard, and added the line, "Got it, you fool?" before crumpling the paper into a ball and tossing it to the brown-haired boy.

Hal, the brown-haired boy, reacted quickly.

He immediately noticed the paper ball, stretched out his hand, caught it, and then unfolded it, reading aloud, "Hmm, currently, the magic world is generally organized by guilds..."

Nord nodded, then, with a self-deprecating smile, thought, (I really am meddling, aren't I? Maybe it would be more interesting if he couldn't answer.)

Just as he was listening to Hal finish reading, Nord suddenly heard something that left him stunned.

"This is the current situation in the magic world. Got it, you fool?"

"......"

The entire classroom fell silent again, and then a wave of furious anger descended from the podium. "Hal !!!!!! After class, you stay behind and clean the entire classroom!!!"

"Please no!!!" Hal, now realizing what he had done, wailed and collapsed onto his desk.

Nord shook his head with a vein popping on his forehead, confirming his thought once again: this guy is definitely an idiot.

"And you... Nord!!!"

The teacher's gaze suddenly turned to the stunned Nord.

"You actually dared to pass him a note? You stay behind and clean the classroom too!!!"

Nord's mouth twitched twice, and he helplessly covered his face with his hand. (Damn it, I got dragged into this.)

After class, Nord sat on a desk, tossing the mop aside, bored as he watched the culprit below, who was diligently cleaning the floor.

"Hey, are you an idiot? You actually read the last sentence out loud?" Nord spoke up.

Hearing Nord's words, the brown-haired child wiped the sweat off his face and looked at Nord apologetically.

"Uh, because I didn't understand, and I was nervous at the time, so I just blurted it out without thinking. Sorry for dragging you into this," the brown-haired child said, scratching his head.

Nord rolled his eyes.

He was terrible at dealing with this type of person.

"By the way, what's your name?" the brown-haired child asked.

"... Nord."

"Eh? Are you the one everyone talks about, the guy who ignores everyone?" Hal rested the mop on his shoulder, looking surprised.

"Who knows," Nord shrugged.

"Well, whatever. Nice to meet you! I'm Hal. Let's be friends," the brown-haired child said, flashing a big grin.

"Why would I want to be friends with you?"

"Ha?" Hal looked stunned, then muttered to himself, "Oh right, why? Hmm, let me think... Oh, it's because we're destined to be friends!"

Nord's mouth twitched as he looked at the guy below who seemed to think highly of himself, momentarily at a loss for words.

"Yes, exactly! We're destined to be friends, so let's help each other out from now on!" Hal said, giving a thumbs-up and smiling.

"Idiot!" Nord muttered, but didn't notice that the corner of his mouth had slightly curved up.

It was a smile of resignation.

That was Nord and Hal first meeting.
