Chapter 247: Waking Up

Aiden stirred awake slowly, his head heavy and throbbing as if a gang of trolls were hammering away inside his skull. He groaned, attempting to sit up, but the dull ache in his body protested against even the smallest movement. Fragments of recent events flitted through his mind like a disjointed puzzle, and then, with a jolt, he remembered.

The water bottle. It had been drugged.

Panic shot through him as his eyes widened. Serena had taken out a bottle for herself too—had she been drugged as well? The thought made his chest tighten. With newfound urgency, he pushed himself up, only to collapse back onto the couch as his legs turned to jelly beneath him.

His frantic gaze darted around the unfamiliar room. It took a moment to register that the surroundings had changed subtly. Or rather, the lighting had changed. They’d reached here early in the morning but now, it was almost evening. He’d been unconscious for most of the day!

This made his worry heighten more. Where was Serena?

Before he could gather his bearings, the door creaked open. Relief flooded through him as Serena walked in, looking unharmed. But his momentary comfort wavered as he caught a glimpse of her expression. Her face was calm but carried an edge, her gaze sharp and steady. She wasn’t panicked or confused—she was in control.

"Serena," he croaked, his voice hoarse, "are you okay? Were you drugged too?"

Instead of answering, she walked toward him with deliberate steps, her presence commanding. When he tried to sit up again, she shook her head firmly, pressing a hand to his shoulder to keep him down.

"Stay put, Aiden," she said, her voice low and steady. "I was the one who drugged you."

Aiden’s eyes widened in disbelief. "You? You drugged me?" he asked, his voice rising in both pitch and confusion. "Why would you do that?"

Instead of responding, Serena moved around the large couch, her movements slow and almost predatory. Aiden frowned, his head still fuzzy as he watched her.

"What are you doing?" he demanded, suspicion creeping into his tone.

She raised an eyebrow, a sly smirk playing on her lips as she came to stand beside him. "What do you think I’m doing?"

Aiden’s heart raced as he tried to make sense of the situation. His mind reeled, struggling to piece together her actions. "Why did you drug me?" he repeated, frustration lacing his voice.

Serena leaned over him then, her hands resting on either side of the pillow. She was so close that her shadow fell across his face, and he could see the glint of amusement in her eyes.

"My husband," she murmured, her tone teasing, "you’ve woken up after so long. Why waste time on questions?"

Aiden blinked, the pieces starting to fall into place. A memory stirred then.

Of course. She was recreating the scene from their very first interaction. He should have known. Serena was always one for dramatics.

He pressed his head back against the cushion, narrowing his eyes. "I’ll scream if you don’t step back."

"I doubt that would help. People would think it’s just part of our... reunion."

"Reunion?" he echoed, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "What reunion?"

Her smirk widened. "Aiden Hawk," she said, her tone dropping to a conspiratorial whisper, "you’ve been kidnapped. And if you want to live freely again, you’ll have to marry me."

The absurdity of her words made Aiden laugh despite himself. Before she could pull back, he grabbed her by the waist and flipped them both over, pinning her beneath him on the couch.

"Oops," he said with a cocky grin, "looks like I flipped the tables on you."

Serena didn’t flinch. Instead, she smiled up at him, the warmth in her expression disarming. She rubbed her nose against his playfully. "Hmm, the tables were already flipped. Or have you forgotten? That day you asked me to divorce you."

Aiden smiled then. That was indeed true. He had been amazed by her cleverness even then. And even now, she had not stopped confusing him.

He looked down at her, his tone softening. "So, why did you drug me?"

Serena shook her head, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Let’s just say it was all part of the ’big plan.’"

Aiden sighed, torn between exasperation and amusement. "Big plan, huh?"

Before he could ask more, the temptation to lean down was too strong. He tilted his head and brushed his lips against hers in a quick, stolen kiss.

Serena hummed in approval, her hands finding their way to his shoulders. "You always do that," she whispered.

"Do what?" he asked, his lips curving into a grin.

"Make me forget everything. Come on. Get up and let’s go."

Like shehad been doing through the day, she pulled him by the wrist and walked slowly up the stairs. As they reached the stairs, Aiden could not help but smile then as he caught her hand," Who was it that said something about candles being cheesy?"

"Well, they are. And not practical because they can blow off or something. These are battery operated. So... not cheesy."

Aiden smiled then but before he could tease her about it, she pulled him towards the couch and had him sit down. He looked around with interest. The upstairs was actually the same as the downstairs with the only difference being the candles.

And then she lowered herself before him and he could not help but widen his eyes. Dam* it! had she taken the proposal this seriously. She was kneeling in front of him?

He was about to stand up but she pushed him backwards and something in him told her that she needed this. So, he sat still and let her take the lead in talking.

"When I woke up in that hospital," she began, her voice quiet but unwavering, "my mind was as empty as that cabin inside. And my body... it felt as weak as yours is feeling now."

"I always thought I could live my life alone," she continued, her voice taking on a wistful tone. "Forever, if I had to. I convinced myself it was safer that way—no attachments, no vulnerabilities, no one to hurt me or leave me behind."
