Falling For My Accidental CEO Husband-Chapter 251: Driving Back
Chapter 251: Driving Back
The moment they got into the car, Serena couldn’t hold back the laughter she had been suppressing all through dinner. Her giggles spilled out, light and infectious, filling the small space.
Aiden glanced at her, his eyebrows lifting in mock curiosity. "What’s so funny? I thought you said you’d be all jealous when you met my ex. But here you are, laughing like it’s the best night of your life. You’re not jealous at all."
Serena nodded, her laughter bubbling up again as she tried to respond. "That’s because you didn’t even give me a chance to get jealous!" she managed, her tone playful. Then, straightening up, she mimicked someone’s voice with surprising accuracy, her expression overly dramatic. "’I ordered orange juice for Aiden because it’s his favorite!’" She paused to laugh again before adding, "Now, I might have been jealous if you’d actually drunk the juice or said something ridiculous like, ’Oh, I don’t like orange juice anymore.’ But no... instead, you..."
Her laughter erupted again as the memory took hold. She clutched her stomach, shaking her head at the absurdity of the moment.
Aiden, as usual, had been himself—cool and unaffected. He hadn’t drunk the orange juice, nor had he lied to spare her feeling or try to hurt Kim by claiming that he hated orange juice now. Because that would have been a lie.. Instead, he’d picked up the glass as if to take a sip, but then—almost comically—it had slipped from his fingers and spilled onto the floor. Before anyone could react, he had smoothly grabbed her glass of water, taken a long, deliberate sip, and declared, "Your water is tastier than any orange juice could ever be."
Serena could barely breathe as she continued to laugh about it. Dam* the woman’s expression had been amazing. "I mean, who does that?" she said between fits of laughter. "You didn’t just avoid the juice; you made it seem like my water was some five-star drink!"
"What can I say? Anything your lips touch is infinitely better tasting."
That made Serena laugh again, even as she quickly leaned forward and placed a kiss on his cheek," Thank you, Aiden Hawk. You actually have a decent EQ. I like that."
Aiden sent her a glance then and shook his head," What is it that you want to know?"
Serena rolled her eyes and sat back," What was she talking about seeing you over dinner?"
Aiden grimaced, running a hand through his hair. He should have known better than to think anything would escape Serena’s notice. She was far too observant for that. With a sigh, he admitted, "I didn’t mean to keep it from you. The night before you proposed to me, Ella invited Kim over for dinner at the house. And before that, there was a business meeting..."
As Aiden recounted the incidents, Serena listened intently, her brows drawing together in surprise. She hadn’t expected this.
"Kim’s been trying to inch her way back into your life. I don’t need to spell it out for you—she’s here to create trouble. And from what I see, Aiden, she’s good at it. You need to be careful."
Aiden nodded," Yep. We need to be careful.I guessed as much with her trying to needle you during dinner."
Serena rolled her eyes," If she’s hoping to drive a wedge between us, she’s in for a rude awakening. Anyway, tell me more. Why is Sam so insistent on helping her out? I thought she kind of liked me."
Aiden sighed, rubbing the back of his neck as if trying to work through a knot of frustration. "I think it’s... well, a misplaced sense of gratitude," he began, his tone laced with reluctance. "Skylar isn’t exactly the best when it comes to relationships. He’s a bit... complicated, you know? When Sam and him first started dating, it was Kim who stepped in and helped Sam figure out how to attract his attention. She gave her advice, coached her, and maybe even pushed things along in ways that Sam couldn’t have managed on her own. Back then, I think she was overwhelmed and desperate to make things work with Skylar."
Aiden paused, his brow furrowing as he tried to find the right words. "And I guess that’s why Sam is so... tolerant of her behavior now. Also... Skylar and Sam... things are not going as well as Sam wants us to believe."
They’re having problems in their relationship?" Serena asked, her tone laced with shock. From what she had observed, Sam was utterly devoted to Skylar. If there were cracks in their relationship, surely the concern must be coming from Skylar’s side?
"Your friend really is a fool if he’s even considering breaking up with Sam," Serena added firmly. "That woman is absolutely crazy about him. Anyone with eyes can see it."
Aiden gave a slight shake of his head, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "I don’t think Skylar’s thinking about breaking things off. He’s not that reckless, and he’s smart enough to know that finding someone who loves him the way Sam does isn’t exactly easy. But..." Aiden paused, choosing his words carefully. "According to Skylar, Sam seems to have... changed. It’s not that she doesn’t love him anymore—it’s more like there’s a distance between them. And while Skylar’s trying to figure out what’s different, he’s struggling to reach her. He can’t seem to understand what’s going on in her head."
Serena tilted her head slightly, listening intently as Aiden continued.
"That’s one of the biggest reasons why he’s here," Aiden said, his voice softer now. "It’s not just about work or catching up with old friends. He came back to take a step back from their usual routine, to give himself some space to think and figure out how to fix things. He doesn’t want to rush back until he knows for sure that everything is okay between them."
Serena nodded thoughtfully, her expression serious. "If that’s the case, then there’s a good chance Sam is feeling the same thing—maybe even more strongly than he is. If she called Kim, it might not just be about stirring up trouble. It’s possible she reached out because she genuinely believes Kim could help. So, this Kim, she wants to mend Skylar and Sam’s relationship and ruin ours?"
Aiden gave an enigmatic look at that and shrugged. Seemed like it.
