Chapter 256: Who

"I’ve yet to determine whether Aiden Hawk was involved in the attack," the man said, his tone measured but laced with frustration. "And as for the commotion at the wedding, no one present is willing to talk. It seems they’ve been threatened—or bought into silence. We have not even been able to get the confirmation if the marriage happened or not. It’s very odd really."

Edwin’s jaw tightened as he turned to gaze out of the tall windows. The weight of his failure pressed heavily on his chest. He had believed, that with Matthew Dawn and his uncle gone from this world, his little sister would finally be safe. Leaving the country had seemed like the right choice at the time—a decision made easier by the knowledge that Serena was secure, her future bright and untroubled. He’d even thought that on returning he would be able to go and meet her, forge a relationship with the only living family left for him.

But now? Now, he regretted every moment of his absence. He was coming to attend her wedding. He wanted to see her happy.Instead he had returned to something horrible

The image haunted him: his sister, half-dead and barely clinging to life, being rushed to the hospital. He clenched his fists, remembering the call that had brought him to the hospital instead of the church, a call that shattered the illusion of safety. He shuddered to think what would have happened if he had not asked his man to keep an eye out for Serena.

How long would she have been left there, bleeding to death.

And then there was the man Serena had been meant to marry, standing at the altar in that same church, exchanging vows with someone else. The betrayal burned in Edwin’s mind, his rage bubbling dangerously close to the surface. His first instinct had been to confront Aiden, to make him pay. The urge to pull the trigger on him had been nearly overwhelming. He could easily arrange the man’s death.

But something stopped him. A sliver of doubt, sharp and persistent, whispered in the back of his mind. He didn’t have the full picture yet. The pieces refused to fall into place, leaving gaps too large to ignore. There were too many questions unanswered, too many contradictions gnawing at the edges of the truth.

Why would Aiden, who had professed his intent to marry Serena, replace her at the last moment with someone else? The decision made no sense. Aiden Hawk wasn’t just some cold opportunist—at least, that’s not how he’d seemed. Edwin had observed the man closely. Aiden had appeared to genuinely love Serena, had gone to great lengths to shield her from harm. So why the sudden, calculated betrayal? Why turn around and marry someone else?

The only answer Edwin could conjure was Nvidia. Perhaps it all came down to the company—Serena’s legacy. But even that explanation felt incomplete, hollow. Nvidia belonged to Serena. She had built on it, was nurturing it, and she was the one running it. Moreover, both Serena and Aiden had prenuptial agreements in place, designed to safeguard their respective assets. What motive could Aiden possibly have to orchestrate an attack on Serena, only to take her place at the head of a company that wasn’t even his?

The pieces refused to align. Edwin clenched his fists, the sharp edges of his nails digging into his palms as his frustration grew.

"Where is he?" Edwin’s voice was low but laced with menace, every word cutting like a blade through the tension in the room.

The man in front of him hesitated, his unease palpable before he finally answered, "He’s gone for his honeymoon with the woman—Kimberlee."

Edwin stilled, the words sinking in like a punch to the gut. His sister was barely clinging to life after fighting off death itself, and Aiden Hawk had already whisked himself away on a honeymoon? The audacity of it made his blood boil, a fresh wave of fury surging through him. ƒreewebηoveℓ.com

As Edwin wrestled with his thoughts, trying to piece together the puzzle, his subordinate hesitated before speaking. His voice was cautious yet thoughtful, as though he were treading on thin ice.

"Perhaps, sir," the man began, clearing his throat nervously, "we’re looking at this from the wrong angle."

Edwin turned sharply, narrowing his eyes. "What do you mean by that?", he demanded wanting clarification.

The subordinate shifted uncomfortably under Edwin’s piercing gaze but pressed on. "What if..." He hesitated, choosing his words carefully. "What if Aiden did all of this for love? A man in love can be reckless, even foolish. And... well, Aiden Hawk...Aiden Hawk was engaged to Kimberlee during his college years. It wasn’t just some casual relationship either—they were serious. From what I’ve heard, they were deeply in love. It’s even rumored that Kimberlee was the reason for breaking up the engagement. And after that, Aided did not even date for a long time."

"You’re suggesting that after everything, after all the promises and preparations, Aiden suddenly threw Serena aside for a woman from his past?"

"It might not be as sudden as it seems. Also, it could be that because they met again, the past was rekindled. Aiden might have been unsure about it but then when it came ot the wedding, he got cold feet and tried to break off the marriage. He did make a lot of calls to Serena just before the wedding. Maybe they had a fight over this and so he might have...

The words hung in the air, heavy with implication. Edwin turned back to the window, his jaw tightening as he processed the theory. The idea that Aiden’s betrayal might stem from love rather than greed or malice was an unsettling thought.

But something still didn’t sit right. Love might explain Aiden’s actions, but it didn’t explain the attack on Serena. And it certainly didn’t absolve him of the choices he’d made since.

"Even if that’s true," Edwin said finally, his voice cold and sharp, "it doesn’t justify his actions. Love doesn’t excuse betrayal. And it sure as hell doesn’t explain why my sister was left to die while he walked away to marry someone else."

Whether it was love, greed, or something else entirely, one thing remained certain: Aiden Hawk would not escape his reckoning if he was the one responsible for Serena’s state.
