Chapter 269: The Brown Family

Assistant An cast a concerned glance down at the boss, unable to suppress a growing sense of unease. Aiden Hawk looked like a ghost of his former self, his usually sharp features dulled by exhaustion and the relentless worry about Serena Dawn.

For a moment, he missed the old Aiden Hawk, the one who was only bothered about business and bringing down his opposition. He used to pray then that Aiden would fall in love and maybe forget business for a while. But seeing his boss now, An was almost tempted to find a way to return to the past and change his prayers.

As Aiden’s hand reached toward the file, his expression flickered with a fragile hope that tugged at An’s sense of duty. Yet, before Aiden could claim it, An pulled the file back, and continued," There’s not much here. The old Brown military family is more intricate than we anticipated. Their branches are spread out far and wide with a lot of internal strife and thus their power has weakened a lot, but only two hold enough power to keep information locked away or to make enemies bold enough to move against them. The first branch, An paused for emphasis, "has only one known member—Dr. Dale Brown. He is not just the most powerful figure in the family; he’s the undisputed head of the entire Brown lineage."

An’s gaze shifted back to Aiden, gauging his reaction before continuing. "But here’s the catch. Any trace of his picture or personal details is classified—and I mean classified classified. Even our operatives with the highest clearance couldn’t dig up anything. It’s as though he’s a ghost."

An sighed once again before placing another file on top of the one he was holding on the table, "The second branch is a different story altogether. They’ve been embroiled in controversies since last year. The older man, Colonel Brown, retired from the military a few years ago under a cloud of suspicion. The allegations centered on his new wife—claims of illicit dealings and questionable alliances. Nothing was ever proven, but the rumors were damaging enough that he was forced to resign."

"Despite that, they’ve managed to remain active in certain circles. Colonel Brown and his wife still hold sway, particularly among their powerful friends in the administration. It’s like they’re untouchable, or at least they think they are. The kind of people who know how to play the long game. From what we have found out, they are still powerful because they are holding a lot of secrets of their so called friends."

"And so, they are using blackmail to remain powerful. Both branches may have powerful enemies but the problem here is none of them are connected to Serena and why a member of the Brown family would be there in the car that fell down the cliff. Also, no one even reported any Brown family member missing so we have no way of finding out who they are hiding and why.

"Anyway, there are the newspaper clippings of Colonel Brown and his wife. In case oyu recognise them as soneone who would have reason to be around Serena."

Aiden’s eyes narrowed as he flipped through the file, his gaze scanning the entire page that consisted information about Dr Brown.

After a few moments, Aiden set the file down, his fingers pressing against his temples as though trying to stave off the headache creeping up on him. "Look into international records," he said, his voice low but commanding. "If Brown’s credentials are classified here, it doesn’t mean he’s not operating overseas. We might find information from there. Make sure that the right peolple know we are willing to pay the right price for any information about Serena or this Dale Brown."

An nodded, already making mental notes. "Understood. I’ll dig deeper and cross-check with foreign records."

Aiden didn’t wait for a response. He flipped open the second file, his expression hardening as he gazed at the photo. The image, though clear, sent a strange chill through him. His eyes locked onto the smiling faces of Colonel Edwin Brown and his wife, standing at some high-society event—his arm draped possessively around her shoulders, her gaze almost too calculated to be genuine.

Aiden stiffened, his breath catching in his throat as he scrutinized the photo. The woman in it...

"How long has Colonel Brown been married to his current wife?" Aiden asked slowly.

An frowned, flipping through his own notes, trying to keep the edge out of his voice. "Four years, sir. They married shortly before his retirement."

Aiden nodded slowly, his mind already spinning. "Arrange a meeting with her."

An paused, a brief flicker of doubt crossing his face, but he said nothing. With a sharp nod, he turned and headed for the door, leaving Aiden alone with his thoughts.

Kimberlee was a Brown?

And she was connected to his own mother. Aiden should have figured it out long before now. If it wasn’t Charles Hawk making his life complicated, then it was his first wife. Williama Hawk, who now went by Willie Brown. He would have seen the connection if only he had investigated more thoroughly.

Just how much of a coincidence could this be? The woman who had given him life, the one who raised him, was now the stepmother to the woman who had tried to manipulate him into a marriage he never wanted. How could he not have noticed this earlier? The answer was simple: it wasn’t all a coincidence.

He sighed. He would soon have his answer. It was time to see Mrs Willie Brown and ask her what she was playing at. And if Willie Brown was the one responsible for making his Serena disappear. Then she would be the one who would be disappearing from this world next. With a sigh, he threw the picture aside and stood up. He was not going to wait for Assistant An to arrange a meeting with that piece of work. He needed to see her right away.
