Falling For The Demon Wolf-Chapter 63: VIOLET
"I’m coming with you."
Zain was already halfway into his tactical gear, his jaw locked, movements sharp with fury. He paused, looking at me like I’d just said I wanted to walk into a burning building.
"No," he said flatly.
"I’m not asking."
"Yes, you are," he growled, turning fully toward me. "You think I’ll bring you into a potential ambush right after you—" He stopped himself, biting back the rest. Marked you. Claimed you. Loved you.
I crossed the room to him. "I can handle myself. You said it—you won’t let anyone touch me. Then prove it. Let me stand beside you."
His eyes searched mine. The storm inside him swirled deeper, more dangerous than before—but this time, it wasn’t directed at me. It was for me. His protective instincts warred with his trust in me, until at last, he exhaled sharply and nodded once.
"You stay in the middle of the formation," he ordered. "You don’t leave my side. And if I say move, you run. Understood?"
I nodded, and that was enough.
Within minutes, we were on the trail, accompanied by Maren, Cian, and three scouts. The woods were damp with dew and shadows, but I recognized the tension in the air. Something was wrong. Zain moved like a blade drawn from its sheath—silent, precise, dangerous
he trees were quiet again—too quiet.
Zain pulled me back gently but firmly, his eyes still locked on where the rogues had vanished.
Then we heard it.
A sharp crack. Metal on metal. A muffled shout.
Cian lifted his head. "That’s west of here. The scout team reported signs of humans tracking near the perimeter yesterday."
Zain swore under his breath. "Fan out. Don’t engage unless necessary. Maren, with me—Violet, stay behind us."
"No," I said again, more forcefully this time. "If it’s the same group... I might recognize them."
He turned to me, the veins in his neck taut. "You’ve already done enough."
"I’m not trying to prove anything," I said softly. "But I know what it felt like to be hunted by them. I want to help stop it."
Zain’s stare lingered, unreadable. Then he nodded once. "Stay close."
We moved west.
It didn’t take long to find the wreckage.
A shallow trench marked where a tripwire had detonated. Shredded camo cloth caught in tree branches. Blood, faint and already drying, led into the brush—human, not wolf.
And at the center, a body.
Young. Male. Dressed in tactical gear. A rifle lay half-buried beside him. His hands were calloused, trained.
But his face... 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎
I sucked in a breath. "I’ve seen him before. Near the cabin where I was taken. He... he was there."
Selen crouched beside the corpse, grimacing. "These weren’t just trespassers. They were sent here."
"Hunters," Cian added. "Not just rogues working with them—someone’s organizing this."
Zain’s jaw ticked. "This isn’t a random attack."
My eyes went back to the trees, heart pounding.
There were rogues and humans now—separate and yet moving toward the same goal.
And whatever it was... it had something to do with me.
"They’re not just coming for me," I whispered. "They’re coming for all of us."
Zain stepped beside me, his hand brushing my lower back protectively.
"Then we make sure they regret it."
One of the rogues earlier, I recognized him.
The scar to his left cheek was from my caw when he tried to touch.
An information I can’t tell Zain, gods knows what he’d do.
But what exactly was i risking . I knew what I wanted. And as much as I loved the safety Zain and this pack gave me I have to find my answers.
The war room smelled like pine and ink—maps splayed across the long table, lit by hanging lanterns. Everyone was gathered. Cian, Maren, Gerald, a few of the scouts who’d returned bloodied and shaken.
Zain stood at the head of the table, arms crossed, jaw tight. He hadn’t spoken yet, but the tension rolling off him was a storm waiting to break.
"This wasn’t just an ambush," Cian said, voice clipped. "The humans knew where to wait. The rogues were a decoy."
"They’re working together now," Maren added grimly. "Coordinated. Tactical. This is more than scattered camps. It’s a war effort."
"They’re targeting specific patrols too," Gerald growled. "The one that went missing yesterday included trackers assigned to the southern pass—where Violet came through."
All eyes shifted to me.
I cleared my throat, then stepped forward. "I need to go back."
Zain’s head snapped toward me. "No."
"I know their routes," I pushed on. "I remember faces. There’s something off about the ones who stayed behind. They weren’t just survivors—they were waiting."
"You are still recovering," Zain snapped. "I will not let you go back there."
"It’s not your decision."
He took a step toward me, eyes dark and wild. "The hell it isn’t."
"I have to do this, Zain." My voice cracked, but I didn’t waver. "You think I don’t know the risk? But they’re planning something, and they know me. If there’s a way in—if I can gather information from inside—"
"You are not going back to the monsters who broke you!"
That silenced the room.
Even Gerald looked away.
But I didn’t flinch.
"I survived them once," I said, steady. "This time I won’t be crawling back."
Zain’s hands curled into fists at his sides. His breathing was shallow, chest rising and falling like he was holding back something feral.
Then something in his eyes changed.
Dark memory flickered behind them—something that didn’t belong to now.
I saw the moment he remembered.
The rogue master’s voice.
"She’ll come looking for answers. When she does, try not to stop her."
His rage dimmed into something colder. Resignation. Fear.
And love.
Zain turned away, jaw clenched so tightly I could see the muscles twitching along his neck.
When he finally spoke, his voice was hoarse. "You’ll take a team. Selen, Cian, two of the elite scouts. No arguments."
I blinked, stunned. "You’re letting me go?"
"No." He turned back to me, gaze burning. "I’m letting you lead. So I can follow. So when they try to touch you again, I’ll be the blade that ends them
The meeting came to an end after we had all agreed on when I’ll leave.
I knew Zain still had doubts in his mind which I wanted so much to clear.
But i can’t do that because I also doubted myself if this was the right decision I was making.
I was still very much weak and hadn’t gotten my wild form yet. I didn’t even know if I was ever going to shift or if I was going to remain this way.
So many thoughts.
So many what if’s
I looked up, searching for his eyes to meet mine, but his back was to me as his spoke to cyan and Rhys.
Rhys.
My sister’s mate.
Who knew fated can be this playful.
My father will rather give his head than have his two daughters mated to the beast he has hunted his whole life.
But alas! Here we are.
I may actually even be in love with this beast.
Love.
The butterflies in my stomach came to life and started fluttering.
Just few days ago I was unsure of how I felt about this mark on my neck and here I am today.
Considering the ideas of love with a man I was sent to kill.
I blame it on the bond. On the stupid matebond that their specie was cursed with.
I turned my back to him, silently walking out of the hall.
I felt his eyes on my bank before I passed through the door.
Maybe just maybe I might still kill him.
I laughed at that thought.
That even seem far fetched now.
I walked into our room, and striped naked. The brusies on my skin where fading into a darkish blown colour and it was less painful.
Standing in front of the mirror, I tilted my head to the side.
His mark laid there in my neck, his claim of me, my body and soul.
The door creeked open and he walking in.
I heard the sharp intake of breath as he saw me standing my the window as the moon reflected on my skin.
"Hey." I called out.
"Little wolf." He voice was as soft as the wind brushing against my face as he walked up to me.
"Can I possibly change your mind about going?"
I shakes my head. "I have to Zain. It’s the only way I can find answers as to why this is happing."
"I can send scouts, send hunters. Anything you want, any information they can retrieve it for you." His voice broke.
I turned, cupping his face in my hands. " I really love how safe you make me feel, and how much you want to protect me. But you need to know something Zain, you cannot always be with me."
"I will—"
"No you won’t, and I also can’t keep waiting for you to show up and save me. I need to learn how to save myself."
"Violet please—"
"Let me go this. And I promise I’ll come back to you alive."
