Chapter 150: THE FIRST EPISODE (I)

AFTER the vocal evaluation, the contestants of Boys Odyssey continued practicing for their first live performance. In between their practice sessions, they also recorded various content that would be posted on the show’s social media accounts once it began airing.

And now, the day of the first episode’s airing had finally come.

Unbeknownst to the contestants, the show was generating major buzz online. With Lily confirmed as host and rumors swirling about the whole thing being filmed on a ship, public excitement had been building for weeks. People claimed to be tired of survival shows, but when something fresh came along, they still couldn’t resist watching.

So, as the clock neared 10 PM, viewers curious about the show tuned into Vnet, waiting for the first episode to start. And because the episode would also be streamed live on Vnet’s YouTube channel, viewers outside Korea would also be able to watch it at the same time.

Haneul’s family was among the many waiting for the show to begin. Since it was Friday night and Haeun had no school tomorrow, the three of them—Haeun sandwiched between her parents—sat together on the living room couch, all watching the TV screen.

"I’m so nervous and excited," Haeun said, bouncing slightly in her seat. "What if Oppa barely gets any screen time? I swear, if they don’t show him enough, I’ll write a thousand-word complaint and post it everywhere online."

"If only you put that much effort into your school essays," Hyunwoo remarked, glancing at his daughter with a wry smile.

"Dad, this and that are two different things," Haeun pouted.

"But why wouldn’t they show your brother?" Eunji asked, returning to her daughter’s earlier worry. "He’s one of the contestants—of course, he’ll appear."

Haeun shrugged. "That’s just how these shows work, Mom. There’s like a hundred contestants and only ninety minutes per episode. There’s no way they can show everyone properly."

Eunji frowned at this. The thought of her son being sidelined and forgotten didn’t sit right with her at all.

Noticing his wife’s expression, Hyunwoo gave her shoulder a reassuring pat. "Don’t worry. With how handsome our Haneul is, it would be their loss if they don’t show him."

Haeun nodded along, but she wasn’t fully convinced. If the PD already had favorites, it wouldn’t matter how handsome or talented Haneul was. She just hoped that wasn’t the case. In shows like this—where public votes decided everything—getting too little screen time could get someone eliminated no matter how good they were.

She clenched her fists. If this show dared to sabotage her brother’s chances by cutting his screen time, she’d take matters into her own hands. She’d create a fan account, flood it with his best photos and singing clips. With how stunning—no, downright beautiful—her brother was, anyone with eyes would instantly become a fan. That’s what a good sister should do.

Haeun’s eyes snapped to the TV as the final advertisement faded to black. "Mom, Dad, it’s starting!"

The episode opened with a sweeping aerial shot of the ocean at dusk, the camera gliding over waves that shimmered like crushed diamonds under the fading light. Soft piano notes drifted in—a melancholy yet hopeful melody that built slowly as a narrator’s voice spoke over the visuals.

The voice was familiar to many. Because it unmistakably belonged to Lily, one of the members of Noir Roses, and the host of the show.

"Every dream begins with a single step... and for these hundred boys, that step leads onto a ship sailing toward destiny."

The music swelled as the scene cut to the Boys Odyssey logo materializing over a time-lapse of stars swirling across the night sky. Then there was a sudden shift. The piano melted into pulsing synth beats as quick cuts flashed: close-ups of determined eyes, calloused fingers gripping microphones, sweat flying off brows during practice.

"But dreams don’t come easy. On these decks, every step forward is earned through sweat and tears."

There was a final crescendo as the screen faded to black.

The first scene opened with several buses arriving at a luxurious hotel. As contestants began stepping off, the cameras zoomed in on certain faces—each close-up cutting to a brief VTR clip of that contestant in an interview room introducing themselves.

Haeun barely glanced at the other contestants, her eyes scanning the screen for one person. Then she spotted him—Haneul walking beside Robin. "Mom! Dad! Look! There’s Oppa!" She pointed excitedly at the screen. "He’s with Robin Oppa!"

But before her parents could spot her brother, the camera suddenly switched to another contestant. Haeun opened her mouth to protest—then froze. The guy now filling the screen was ridiculously good-looking in that intense, masculine way. Black hair, sharp features, and those eyes—were they really gray? She blinked, thinking it might just be the lighting, but then his introduction clip played, confirming the unusual color.

"I’m Jung Taeyang, 18 years old." - the guy introduced himself without much expression on his face.

She frowned. This guy would definitely be a tough competition.

"What an interesting eye color." Haeun heard her father comment. "Do you think he’s mixed?"

"Maybe it’s just contact lens, and he’s just trying to get attention," she said.

Hyunwoo glanced sideways at his daughter and nearly chuckled at the glare she was directing at this "Jung Taeyang" kid. There’s no question about it. Haeun must have already pegged him as Haneul’s biggest competition.

Eunji, meanwhile, kept her eyes fixed on the young man now filling their TV screen. This was definitely the same person who had approached them that day—the Alpha who’d stopped them at the elevator just to thank Haneul for helping his cousin. She’d almost forgotten that this boy had also passed the auditions and would be competing alongside her son.

Remembering how her son had gone into heat after being near the young Alpha, her frown deepened with quiet concern.

After a few more contestant close-ups, the scene returned to the busy hotel entrance. The cameras followed the stream of contestants walking inside, their heads turning in marvel as they took in the lavish lobby.
