Chapter 60: 057. Kalomba.

A sunny day as usual. Quiet everyday life like any other day.

Everything was so peaceful at a time when the world had not yet been engulfed in the chaos that began with the declaration of world change by a man who called himself Gilgamesh.

The sun was high and it was time to go home for the children who attended elementary school.

Groups of children ran out to the school gates in their typical uniforms. White shirts and red pants for boys and red skirts for girls.

For children who are still in 1st Grade to 3rd grade, it is not unusual to see adults waiting for the students in front of the gate, those adults are the students’ parents or at least their guardians.

One of those adults was Reizel. Only wearing a plain black t-shirt and jeans, not wearing his iconic sunglasses and only wearing sandals as his footwear.

The wavy-haired man was at the location not as a parent, because what he was waiting for was not his child, but his younger sister.

A little girl walked quickly towards Reizel. Her hair was waist-length black.

Her eyes were the same color as her skin, light brown, a common color for those living in tropical regions.

The little girl looked at Reizel with a cheerful smile that was so innocent as if the world was just a nice simple place.

"I want to buy that," said the little girl, pointing at the hawker who was selling his wares using a small cart.

Reizel had no choice but to open his wallet and finally agreed to the little girl’s wish.

The little girl was happy and went straight to the cart and ordered like the other children who also had the same goal.

The cart was a mini kitchen ready to serve one specific dish, fried food.

Fried egg rolls, fried meatballs, fried tofu, fried sausages, mini martabak, and various snacks that can be eaten quickly at a cheap price.

When his little sister was satisfied, Reizel finally took her home on a motorcycle that looked old, but was still in good working order.

After a while, the two arrived at a neighborhood with a row of simple houses.

Reizel’s house was a small house made of cement and bricks with a terrace that was enough for one wooden bench and a small wooden table.

"Lana, don’t wander around in the afternoon. after work, I’m going to the to see father," Reizel said to his younger sister who had just gotten off the motorcycle.

"But in the afternoon I want to go play!" snapped the little girl named Lana.

"You can’t, who will look after the house if -"

Lana stuck her tongue out at Reizel. "I don’t want to, I don’t want to!"

Lana ran into the house leaving Reizel who was still sitting on his motorcycle.

The man could only sigh before finally parking his motorcycle under a sizable mango tree.

Reizel’s house may be small but the front yard is quite spacious. At least, the width of the empty land in front of his house was about 7 meters, enough for a mango tree to grow.

Reizel took out a pack of cigarettes and lit a cigarette to smoke.

Sitting on the motorcycle right under the mango tree, Reizel looked up at the clear sky while fantasizing about how beautiful this peaceful life would be.

Even though he only lived with his father and younger sister, the peaceful life felt so soothing.

After finishing a cigarette, Reizel entered the house and found Lana sitting on the sofa in the living room, holding a smartphone and playing games.

Fortunately, Lana had taken off her school uniform and replaced it with regular clothes. If Lana was still wearing her school uniform and playing games, Reizel might have had to confiscate the smartphone.

After drinking a glass of water, Reizel went to the place where he worked because what he was actually doing at this time was taking a break as well as a permit that was longer than the proper break time.

The man worked as a construction laborer who luckily got permission from his boss to pick up his sister.

After arriving at the construction site, he immediately set to work to help with the construction of what looked like it was going to be a large store.

Few hours have passed and the sun was about to set but the work of the construction workers was not yet finished, it looked like they would have to continue their work tomorrow.

The construction workers went home, although some stayed to chat for a while before deciding to go home.

But Reizel didn’t go straight home, he still had a duty to pick up his father who was working in the farm.

The journey continued for Reizel and by the time he reached his father’s farm, the sky had darkened.

Reizel used his motorcycle lamp to illuminate the area, including a wooden hut that had no source of light. The hut was usually used as a place to rest in between work.

Reizel walked towards the hut casually, ignoring the coffee trees around.

Usually, his father would be outside the hut, waiting for Reizel’s arrival to pick him up. But today, he didn’t see his father outside and decided to look inside the hut.

However, when he held the wooden door of the hut, he immediately froze. He got goosebumps and felt a very unpleasant aura. He swallowed his own saliva and opened the door with a slight tremble.

"Father, it’s time to -" Reizel paused as he looked at the goat in the corner.

The inside of the hut was dimly lit as only a small amount of light could enter through the holes in the wall.

A goat...

But somehow he felt something strange about the goat.

The goat suddenly stared directly at Reizel and the man’s body was frozen in place.

Although the appearance was a bit vague, but he could see that the goat’s head had a human face.

It was a kalomba.

The kalomba immediately ran towards Reizel with such a threatening intention.

Confusion, fear, panic, all these emotions mixed together and made Reizel only step back once before finally sitting on the ground.

The kalomba came closer and Reizel could feel his heart beating wildly.

As the kalomba was about to crash on Reizel, it immediately stopped and just stood there.

Reizel still didn’t know what happened but he was grateful that he was still okay. But why?

That’s when he realized, the kalomba wasn’t looking at him, it was looking at something else.

Reizel followed the direction of the kalomba’s gaze and found a man with long pants covered in dust and dirt, and a plain t-shirt that also looked as dirty as the long pants he was wearing.

That person was Reizel’s father.
