Chapter 196 -197 I Lost Weight_1
Muniang snorted softly and said, “Why are you telling me all this? You don’t seem to like others knowing too much about your family matters.”
Wu Haoli took a deep breath before answering, “I don’t know, maybe I feel that it’s too exhausting to bear it alone. Besides, you owe me so many favors, and I remember each clearly. It wouldn’t be too much to ask you to share some of the burden, right?”
Muniang pursed her lips but ultimately said nothing. Others admired her for supporting a family at such a young age, but she had brought knowledge and skills from a different world. This man, however, had built his current realm relying solely on his sheer grit.
“Has he left?” Wu Haoli asked abruptly.
Muniang nodded, “He will return in a few months, he still has some affairs to handle on this trip.”
Wu Haoli said, “You speak of it so lightly, aren’t you afraid he might not come back?”
Muniang smiled, “He will come back.”
Wu Haoli curled his lips in a half-smile but said no more.
Muniang always felt that Wu Haoli seemed to know something; that smile of his was indeed a bit eerie. She intended to ask more, but then thought she might be overthinking it. Even if she didn’t trust anyone else, she had to trust him—he had said he would only be gone for two months, so he naturally wouldn’t go back on his word.

These past few days had been incredibly unlucky for Mrs. Chui. The Lin Family owned a small grocery store in the town that made a modest amount of money, but recently the business had been especially poor. The latest batch of stock, due to her negligence, was mixed with a significant amount of spoiled goods. Not only was there no profit to be made, but they were actually facing losses! To make matters worse, the Zheng Family had called off Lin Kexin’s marriage and had even sent someone to take back the fifty silvers of betrothal gifts!
“Damn that little bitch! It’s all Qiao Muniang’s fault, her mother was a jinx, and so is she! Ever since we crossed paths with her, our family has had nothing but bad luck! Kexin’s marriage to Lord Zheng is off, and our shop is in trouble as well! Can’t we have some peace?!” Mrs. Chui cursed angrily and felt terribly upset.
Lin Yang wanted to say that the shop receiving bad goods was her own fault for not paying attention, but he lacked the courage to speak up and so he held back.
“Humph, that Zheng Family is stingy too, such a big household, and they had to take back those fifty silvers, all that wealth can’t cover up their miserly demeanor, they deserve to have lost their son!” Mrs. Chui cursed.
Lin Yang immediately covered Mrs. Chui’s mouth with his hand, terrified, he said, “Have you lost your mind, to speak such nonsense? If Mr. Zheng hears of this, aren’t we as good as dead? Right now, with Mr. Zheng grieved and angry over the loss of his son, it’s a blessing he hasn’t settled the score with us. Besides, the marriage didn’t go through, so it’s only right for them to take back the fifty silvers. With your unguarded tongue, if Mr. Zheng were to hear of this, how would we survive?”
Mrs. Chui, feeling a bit frightened as well, nonetheless retorted stubbornly, “We’re amongst ourselves here; who would go blabbing about it!”
After speaking, she slapped her thigh angrily, “It’s all Qiao Muniang’s fault—why else would our family have so many problems!”
Although she cursed, she didn’t dare to actually trouble Muniang. The mere thought of Muniang’s husband, who was like a madman in protection of his wife, capable of killing a man with a single punch, terrified Mrs. Chui. She was too frightened to gamble with her own life.
Mrs. Chui couldn’t swallow the anger she felt but didn’t dare to go looking for trouble. Frustrated beyond belief, she kicked a chair fiercely and twisted her body to enter the house. Lin Yang watched his wife treat her own family this way and felt somewhat dissatisfied in his heart, but he had always been weak, and Mrs. Chui was dominant and harsh. He didn’t dare say a word out of line, so all he could do was quietly sigh.
A month had passed, and Muniang had been busy in the kitchen all day, working on new dishes, until Jin Feng came in, holding a pigeon in his hand.
“Ha, you even caught a pigeon for me. Are you craving pigeon meat? Roasted squab would be nice,” Muniang’s eyes sparkled the moment she saw the plump white pigeon in Jin Feng’s hand.
Jin Feng’s mouth twitched before he said, “This is a messenger pigeon, the General has sent you a letter.”
Muniang briefly stunned. It had been a month since she had any news of him and she didn’t know if he was doing well. She quickly wiped her hands on her apron and took the pigeon from Jin Feng. She pulled out a small rolled-up piece of paper from the message cylinder.

“Safely arrived at Capital City in half a month’s time. Most of the palace issues are already dealt with. Not used to the food from others, have lost weight.” The piece of paper was very small, so only a few words could be written on it.
Upon seeing the last two words, Muniang couldn’t help but let out a “pfft” and started laughing. Who else would add such words to ensure safekeeping? But she often heard Jin Feng mention how Erliang wasn’t foolish and how cold he was like an iceberg; such a man would speak playfully to her. Was this his way of being coquettish?
Jin Feng wore a bitter face. This pigeon was an expensive item, a tribute from the Western Regions, chosen because it flew exceptionally fast and was used for emergency communication. God knows how much he wanted to know about the situation in the palace. He was so excited when he received the pigeon today, thinking there was news, but when he saw “For Muniang only” engraved on the message cylinder, Jin Feng felt deflated.
So the General is now using this precious pigeon to send love letters!
Jin Feng asked Muniang hopefully, “Did the General mention anything about the court situation?”
Muniang replied with amusement, “Why would he talk to me about those things? I wouldn’t understand anyway. But he did say that most of them were handled, so it should be going well. You shouldn’t worry about it.”
Jin Feng handed the pigeon back to Muniang, “You should reply to the General, otherwise he’ll keep worrying about you.”
Muniang smiled, took the pigeon, and left.
She pondered for a long time with her pen in hand before writing, “All is well, no need to worry, will make good food for you.”
Erliang knew that Muniang could read, and since Erliang wasn’t very bright, she never bothered to hide anything from him before. Moreover, they lived in the same room every day – how could she possibly fool him? And Muniang checked the account books every day! As long as she reminded him not to tell anyone, he would obediently keep it to himself.
Now though his mind was clearer, Muniang didn’t have anything to guard against. Not to mention Erliang wouldn’t doubt her the slightest bit, and even if he did, Muniang could easily come up with a story to deflect.
Capital City.
“Prince, the evidence of Consort Yuan and Prime Minister Kong colluding with Qilian Kingdom is conclusive. Prince San has been deposed, leaving no doubt for the Crown Prince to ascend the throne.” A guard respectfully bowed and reported the situation to Yu Ze.
