Fated To Three, Betrayed By All… Until She Rose.-Chapter 279: His confession.
Kael.
For the next couple of minutes, no one moved nor spoke. No one even breathed in the wrong direction either in fear of breaking the awkward tenseness that now settled above us like a cloud of smoke.
My body shook ever so slightly– not in fear but in annoyance, and in that instant, only one thought mattered to me. Only one girl’s name replayed itself in my mind over and over again; and the thought of her made me rise to my feet, so much so that the chair I sat on groaned in response.
"Leilani." I spat,
"Huh? What happened to her?’’ Caelum rasped out, his frown deepening as he turned to look at me. I almost bristled under his intense stares– almost, because I soon shook out of it and said;
"If Chalice can go through the trouble of causing a fire just to flee from her cell, then best believe, she’s most probably after Leilani.’’
At my words, both of my brothers went silent, their eyes filling with something I couldn’t quite name. And as if a light bulb had suddenly been turned on in their heads, they lightened up. Zevran asked;
"Or just like anyone else, she’d just wanted her freedom, Leilani or not?"
I wanted to believe that. I wanted to calm down, thinking that she’d only wanted to flee from us, but the more I thought about it, the less calm I felt.
My hands curled around the edge of the folder in front of me, my breath coming in short harsh pants as I stared at the letters which now blurred together.
My voice was cold, detached. It sounded just like I wanted to feel as I said; "Since when did Chalice stop trying to hurt Leilani? Since when did she give up her plan to take her sister’s life?"
At my words, silence settled between us again. But this time, it was quickly disturbed when Caelum asked; "Do you think she would make a stop at Leilani’s first?"
"I don’t know, but we need to go check out the dungeons and find out what indeed caused the fire." I answered immediately; and then after a moment, I added; "Call Leilani."
I was talking to Zevran.
Zevran the only one who Leilani talks to and the only one who I seldom think she’s finally accepted amongst us... well besides that one day she had refused to let him touch her.
He frowned slightly but said nothing, and with a nod, walked out of the room with his cell phone in hand.
Caelum walked out next after bowing slightly to me, and in his words, he had to leave to ensure that things were fine back at home.
I settled onto my chair after they were both long gone, and it wasn’t until this moment that I finally let out the breath I’d been holding.
’What would you do now, Alpha?’ My wolf asked and in response, I grunted.
’I don’t know...’ I drawled softly, ’I could kill her if I have to... that’s if it’s true that she’s out to hurt Leilani." 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖
Zephyr purred in understanding before retreating into his space at the corner of my mind.
As the silence around me thickened, I worried about Chalice’s escape— but not in the way that you would think.
I wasn’t worried about her but about what she intended to do... I was also interested in knowing who must’ve aided her escape; and for some reason— so help me goddess, I also saw this as an avenue to throw her out of the pack faster than I had intended to.
But to work these out, I just needed to ensure that she would fall for my trap.
And I was sure as hell that she would.
—
Leilani.
The afternoon was unusually hot and I do not know if it is because I was still very accustomed to the winter that had just ended, but as I walked through the streets with my grocery bag in hand, I felt like I was about to melt and die.
Sweat was pouring down my face and my hands clasped around the bag’s handle was slick as hell. My clothes were stuck to my skin in spots that were so wet, gosh, let’s not talk about it!
And as I trudged through the half empty street, panting, I couldn’t help but feel my heart racing. The hairs at the back of my neck stood on end too and for some reason, the unshakable feeling of someone watching me made me almost freeze mid step.
Stopping, I turned around to glance around me but when I couldn’t find anyone or anything out of the ordinary, I returned to trekking through the streets, whilst thinking happy thoughts as if those could take my mind off things.
It didn’t.
However, I had just crossed the road linking to my estate when a sleek red sports car came to a screeching halt in front of me. My heart plummeted into my rectum just as the door opened before I could register what was happening.
But thank goodness, it was no one that should concern me.
It was simply Zevran.
The godforsaken man who wouldn’t let me be. He seethed; "Where the fuck is your phone?"
At the sound of his voice, I frowned and crossed my arms over my chest, ignoring the way the grocery bag struck my stomach as I did that. "What business do you have with my phone?" I hissed, and as soon as I said that, his eyes widened for a minute before he then stopped to wipe off the sweat on his forehead which was also creased with the deepest frown I’ve ever seen on his face.
I almost shrunk into myself when his eyes roved the entire length of my body and he seethed; "Everything, Leilani! Everything! I have been calling you for the past thirty minutes and you haven’t been taking any of my calls? Are you trying to have me killed?"
His words made absolutely no sense to me. If anything, it sounded like he was speaking in an archaic language known as gibberish.
I let my hands drop as I turned to look at him— like really look at him. And I asked; "How?"
But he didn’t stop talking like I had expected him to. He snapped; "I thought that something must’ve happened for you to refuse to pick your calls. I thought that you were in danger. That you were hurt... you don’t know what those thoughts do to me. Do you?"
These words, so carelessly said, made my throat go tight. I gulped and turned away, hating the way tingles spread across my body like a damned teenager experiencing her first hit of puberty.
But despite how mushy I felt inside, I managed a frown and asked; "What does it do to you?"
And goddess, I had half expected him to brush that off. I had expected him to hop back into his fancy car and drive off. So you can imagine my surprise when instead of going any of that, he pulled me into a hug and rested his chin atop my head, his voice unreasonably soft as he whispered;
"It makes me feel incomplete. Like I am being shredded into pieces. It makes breathing difficult too. But you wouldn’t understand that right? Because you do not love me like I love you. You never would!"
