Fated To Three, Betrayed By All… Until She Rose.-Chapter 328: Why?
Leilani.
"What in hell is the meaning of this, Jay?" I hissed through gritted teeth before I could stop myself, my heart pounding in my chest both in annoyance and betrayal.
Annoyance because this wasn’t something anyone with a conscience could just throw at anyone out of the blues, most especially someone who claimed to love you.
And betrayal because somehow, I think I know why he was doing this.
My nostrils flared when he still wouldn’t—couldn’t— bring himself to look at my face. He waved me off like I was nothing but a petulant child and hissed; "You’re being transferred. The new branch in Germany deserves a competent general manager, and there is no one more fit for that position than you, Leilani."
"Are you doing this because you think I am fit for the job or because you just want to throw me out of NYC?!" I barked, and at the sound of my words, he finally lifted his head to look at me.
When our eyes met, at that moment, I swear that I could see everything I was looking for— the annoyance. The pain and betrayal. The little bit of smugness and the irritation. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢
He seethed; "You flatter yourself,"
And by the heavens, those words... Those softly said words made me reel. I stumbled backwards before catching myself, my eyes widening slowly as I glared at him.
"I am not going anywhere." I said coldly. Surely, "I will not leave my entire life here and move to Germany because for some reason, you have decided that you can rule over my life."
Jay leaned into his chair, his eyes raking my entire body for a second too long. I had even almost begun to think that he would never speak until he drawled; "You work for me, not with me. And I have the right to send you there—"
"No, you do not!" I snapped back, interrupting him. "You don’t have the right to do that. You never did. If I say I would not go to fucking Germany, then I won’t."
"You forget that I am your employer!" He yelled, and goddess, I could not help it. I rolled my eyes.
"And you forget that this is a job not a do or die affair. I lost two members of my immediate family within the space of two weeks, my mother is in jail, my nephew needs me, my best friend and brother are about to get married! I am a step closer to finding out about my true origin and yes, I’ve been able to get my wolf... And for some reason, forgive me, Alpha Frostclaw, you want me to drop all of that and go to Germany because you decided to send me there on a whim?!"
"It is not on a whim!" He shouted, slamming his fist on the table as he slowly rose to his feet like a predator stalking its prey; And like this, he towered over me intimidatingly just like his building towered over every other structure in this street.
He hissed; "Do you think I am doing this simply because I want to?"
"Yes, and I don’t care what else you have to sa—"
"I am sending you off because I think you’re distracted!" He yelled, causing me to flinch, "I left you for a couple of weeks and guess what? You signed a business deal with that cocky bastard I found at your house the other day?!"
"He’s sponsoring the smart traffic project!" I yelled back,
"And there are other companies that can do that!" He shouted in my face, causing goosebumps to spread across my skin. I took a subconscious step back as if wanting to be away from him, and just as I did that, I realized to my horror that he’d been watching me closely, and now, his face had fallen.
"No one was willing to pay as high as he did. Check the deal, it is as flexible as water and smooth—"
"And if you were smart enough, you would’ve realized that it wasn’t the deal he wanted but you." Jay clapped back, interrupting me.
I clamped my lips together, my face stinging at the not so subtle insult. But despite this, I was firm in my resolve not to leave NYC. So I spat;
"And maybe that’s true. Maybe I wasn’t smart enough to clock that, but you’re also an ingrate."
At my words he froze. His eyes came to meet mine and they were so cold, they could literally freeze fire. "What do you mean?" He growled,
"I mean that you’re an ingrate. An ungrateful bastard who’s only concerned about himself and no one else!" I nearly yelled, "...you call me stupid for signing myself away. Myself not your company. I was willing to do that just so that we get a better deal and what do I get? Insults and a letter sending me off to the literal devil’s anus?!"
"Leilani!"
"No, you don’t get to yell at me like I am some kid, Alpha Frostclaw." I hissed, ignoring the way his eyes widened before he slowly lowered his head.
"Do you know how many establishments offer me spots at their company on a daily basis? Do you know how much most of them are willing to pay me and for positions higher than the one I currently occupy? But I stuck with you! Why? Because I was and am forever grateful to you. I stayed because I used to think I was and should be indebted to you for bringing me out of a very difficult situation. I worked my ass off when you were away to keep your company afloat... even when I had an accident and almost lost my life, what did I think about? How to come back here! How to resume without it seeming like I ever missed a day! Goddess, how did I even get into an accident? While trying to deliver the company’s files to an investor..."
"I didn’t ask for all that..." he drawled, twisting the knife deeper into my chest and gulping, I nodded.
"Yes, I already know that, and that’s why I say that you’re an ungrateful bastard. And I will not go."
"Lani..."
"No, it’s fine. I guess it is better to just resign than continue with this madness. I am tired, truth be told!"
"You don’t get it!" He tried to say but I waved him off, turning away as I hissed;
"No you don’t. You really don’t!"
"How do I explain to you that I am jealous?!" He snarled, causing me to halt in my steps. "How do I explain that this is the only way I can think of creating a wedge between you and the triplets?! I was gone for how long and you already bear their mark... how long do I have to wait until they sweep you off your feet then? A week? Two?!"
"Jay—"
"I know about the deal you had with them, Lani, but I don’t trust it. The moon goddess paired you all so now imagine what would happen now that you’ve finally accepted their marks?" He barked, and at that moment, I found myself unable to speak, not because I couldn’t speak but because even I was lost for words.
—And I had no answer to his question.
