Fiancée Stolen by MC, I Trip Them up-Chapter 369 - 271: The Emperor Doesn’t Eat People!
Upon hearing the discussions from the two groups of people, cold sweat broke out on Linglong’s forehead.
They must quickly clear up the misunderstanding.
Otherwise, the emperor’s reputation would be completely ruined.
Not that he had much of a good reputation...
Clearing her throat, Linglong was just about to speak when the two noisy groups suddenly joined in conversation.
An eighty-year-old man, longing to return home to farm, looked curiously at the sturdy, dark-faced man across from him and frowned, saying, "Kid, what did you just say? This old man is hard of hearing due to age; I can’t quite catch it. What are you intending to give the emperor to eat? Is it those fluffy steamed buns from your house?"
The dark-faced man heard the elder’s words, smiled complacently, and then lifted up a chubby little boy who had been nibbling on a chicken leg while hugging his thigh.
The little boy was only about four or five years old, fair-skinned and chubby, with rosy lips and white teeth, looking very adorable.
The little kid was used to playing around with his dad and wasn’t afraid when suddenly lifted up, gripping the chicken leg tightly in his hand, oil dripping from his mouth in a very comical manner.
Holding his son up, the dark-faced man proudly asked, "Elder, what do you think of my boy?"
The elderly folks often have a fondness for children, especially when they’re as endearingly chubby and cute as this little one. The old man nodded approvingly, smiling.
"Not bad; he’s a good kid!"
Hearing this, the dark-faced man felt even more proud and said boastfully, "My boy, Bao Wa, is the fairest in our village. Offering such a good child as a medicinal sacrifice to the emperor will surely cure his illness, don’t you think?"
After saying this, the dark-faced man added, "Of course, we need to test it on me first. I’m the strongest man in Buffalo Village. Maybe once the emperor eats this, his ailment will be instantly cured. If it doesn’t work, we can let Bao Wa have a go!"
Listening to the dark-faced man’s words, a gentle and pretty woman nearby felt displeased.
She snatched the child, named Bao Wa, from the man’s arms, complaining, "Why should you go first? If anyone should, it ought to be me! I’m the most radiant and pretty woman in our village; I can surely cure the emperor. If it doesn’t work, then it’ll be your turn with Bao Wa."
After the woman’s words, before the dark-faced man could retort, the other people around began to express their displeasure.
"You Bao Wa’s parents are really shameless! Bao Wa’s upbringing is natural; why do you both think you’re the strongest and most radiant?"
"Exactly, exactly!"
"I’ve had enough of these two; blowing their own trumpet in the village is one thing, but now they’ve come to Shengjing City, claiming they’re the best, as if there were nobody else in Buffalo Village!"
"You both should just step aside..."
Clearly, these people were very dissatisfied with the self-aggrandizing couple. If not for Bao Wa’s sake, some hot-headed young lads would have challenged the dark-faced man outright.
The dark-faced man wasn’t fazed. 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎
He took the child back into his arms from his wife, standing straight and tall, with an air of pride on his face.
No matter what was said, as long as Bao Wa was with him, no one could take that away!
Indeed, those young men, grinding their teeth in frustration, could do nothing.
Meanwhile, the old man was utterly bemused by what he heard.
He glanced at the dark-faced man and then shifted his gaze to Bao Wa’s face, asking, "Boy, what exactly do you mean by ’medicinal sacrifice’? Who is this child being sent to as a medicinal sacrifice?"
As he spoke, the old man’s expression darkened, evidently recalling some unpleasant memory, clutching the hoe in his hand a little tighter.
"Who else could it be, of course, it’s for His Majesty, the emperor!"
The dark-faced man, after speaking, turned to the old man with a puzzled look, asking, "Elder, aren’t you here also to serve as a medicinal sacrifice for the emperor?"
Hmm?
The old man froze for a moment, a puzzled look on his face, saying, "No, we heard there was a monster wanting to kill the emperor, so we’re here to lend a hand?"
Hearing this, the dark-faced man and his group exchanged bewildered glances.
"Could it be we got it wrong?" The pretty woman murmured.
The dark-faced man pondered for a moment, then suddenly slapped his thigh and exclaimed, "I get it now!"
Upon hearing this, everyone turned to look at him.
Curious, the old man asked, "Boy, what have you figured out?"
The dark-faced man said excitedly, "The emperor must’ve been injured by the monster and needs people as a medicinal sacrifice because of it!"
The pretty woman’s eyes lit up, "This makes sense! I was wondering, why would the emperor randomly fall ill? It turns out he was wounded by a monster! I was worried the news was false, that we came all this way for nothing. Now I’m relieved!"
After the woman spoke, the dark-faced man and the surrounding villagers all nodded in agreement.
As long as the emperor truly was sick, their trip wouldn’t be in vain.
Meanwhile, the old man had figured it out too.
He exchanged a glance with his sons nearby and then cleared his throat.
"Young man,"
The old man set down his hoe, resting on it, and with a hearty laugh, he spoke with the dark-faced man.
With a tone full of earnest concern, the old man said, "Your boy is still so young; the good days are yet to come. Are you really willing to send him off as a medicinal sacrifice?"
The dark-faced man paused for a moment, then calmly said, "To say I’m not reluctant would be a lie, but we understand gratitude and reciprocation!"
"Even though the emperor doesn’t know us and has never visited our village, we all know the peaceful days we have now are thanks to the emperor!"
"Though the emperor might not expect our repay, we can’t just pretend nothing has happened."
"The emperor has given our village thousands of years of peace, and now he’s met with misfortune. If we don’t help him in his time of need, wouldn’t we be worse than animals?"
Saying this, the dark-faced man glanced at his son, snoozing with a chicken leg in his mouth, and a hint of a loving smile appeared on his tanned face.
"As for this boy, whether or not he can cure the emperor’s illness, I’d trade my life for his!"
"And me too," the pretty woman was unwilling to be outdone, "Two lives in exchange, this little guy still comes out on top!"
Cough, cough!
The old man coughed twice, interrupting the couple’s words.
He glanced at the sleeping child and finally understood why people in the dark-faced man’s village seemed so stifled.
If the emperor truly needed a medicinal sacrifice, they really couldn’t outmatch this kid.
Yet, the old man wasn’t ready to give up.
Smiling at the dark-faced man, he said, "Boy, did the teacher in your village ever teach you about respecting the order of seniority?"
Upon hearing this, the dark-faced man instantly grasped the old man’s meaning.
He pouted, retorting irritably, "I thought the elder was good-natured and honest. I didn’t expect you’d want to bank on your seniority! If it were any other matter, I’d certainly let it go, but not this time. Nobody should think about taking this opportunity from my family!"
The old man, unwilling to concede, tried to persuade again, but at this point, Linglong couldn’t take it anymore.
"Alright, enough with the arguing!"
Linglong looked at the honest and simple villagers, feeling both moved and amused.
"The emperor doesn’t eat people!"
