Flash Marriage With Mr. Sheffield: Go Away, Cheap Man!-Chapter 162: We Ended Up Together Too—How Wonderful
Sophie Sheffield wore an off-white dress, her wavy hair cascading over her shoulders, and beside her stood a handsome young man.
The last time Clara Sterling saw Preston Pierce was four years ago, and he seemed unchanged, still sporting a side-swept hairstyle, wearing a white short-sleeve shirt with ash-gray wide-leg jeans—a simple college student outfit.
Preston Pierce’s family was ordinary, you could even say poor. They lived in the countryside, and he attended elementary and middle school in a town before entering Crestwood No. 1 High School with top marks in the county.
His family background was worlds apart from Sophie Sheffield’s.
During high school, many girls liked Preston Pierce, including Sophie Sheffield.
But Preston Pierce focused solely on his studies in high school, never accepting any girl’s confession.
Even after the college entrance examination, when Sophie Sheffield confessed to him, he also rejected her.
Clara Sterling remembered the day Sophie Sheffield was rejected, crying while calling her, "Clara, he rejected me. He doesn’t like me. I’ve never felt so hurt."
Clara Sterling worried that Sophie Sheffield might not think straight, so she went to the Sheffield Family to accompany her.
That night, Sophie Sheffield cried her heart out in Clara Sterling’s embrace.
"What’s wrong with me? Why doesn’t he like me?"
Clara Sterling gently patted Sophie Sheffield’s back, soothingly, "There’s nothing wrong with you. It’s his poor judgment."
"Does he have someone he likes?" Sophie Sheffield’s eyes were red and teary, making Clara Sterling feel sorry for her.
"He doesn’t seem to have someone he likes. It’s more like..." Clara Sterling frowned.
"More like what?"
Clara Sterling lowered her lashes, pursed her lips, and said, "Insecure."
She thought of herself.
"Insecure?" Sophie Sheffield’s eyes showed confusion. "Why would he feel insecure? He’s so handsome, has great grades, many girls in school like him, and teachers like him too. What’s there to be insecure about?"
Clara Sterling felt a mix of emotions.
She could empathize with Preston Pierce because she was very much like him.
Having good grades, looking good, being liked by teachers and classmates.
But both of their families were not well off.
Crestwood No. 1 High School is a nationally recognized key high school, also the best in the province.
Due to the imbalance between rural and urban educational resources, Crestwood No. 1 High School’s high admission score eliminated more than ninety percent of rural students.
Clara Sterling and Preston Pierce both got into Crestwood No. 1 High School with top scores in the county, and both had rural household registrations. However, most of their classmates were city folks with affluent families.
Originally, Clara Sterling didn’t feel too insecure, but after visiting the Sheffield Family and falling for Silas Sheffield at first sight, a sense of insecurity arose.
She thought that maybe Preston Pierce, like her, fell for someone but knew his family’s conditions were a world apart from hers, feeling unworthy.
Watching Sophie Sheffield and Preston Pierce standing at the exit, Clara Sterling felt touched.
Luckily, four years later, she married the man she secretly had a crush on, and Preston Pierce ended up with Sophie Sheffield.
That’s wonderful.
"Sorry for the wait." Clara Sterling said with a smile.
"Hey, bro, sis." Preston Pierce greeted, looking a bit nervous.
It must be his first meeting with Sophie Sheffield’s family.
Silas Sheffield’s gaze lingered on his face for a moment, scanning, then he slightly nodded, showing no expression, unable to tell if he was satisfied with his brother-in-law.
He was always indifferent to outsiders.
That evening, they had dinner together at a restaurant.
After dinner, Clara Sterling and Silas Sheffield returned to The Ripplewood Estate.
In the car, Clara Sterling asked Silas Sheffield, "What do you think of Preston Pierce?"
Silas Sheffield replied indifferently, "He’s okay."
Clara Sterling said with a smile, "He was in the same year as Sophie and me. He was also the campus heartthrob that year. You were the campus heartthrob of Crestwood No. 1 too. I remember when I was in high school, many people compared you to Preston Pierce. Most classmates thought you were more handsome."
Upon hearing this, Silas Sheffield turned slightly to look at her, "How about you?"
Clara Sterling grinned, "Of course, I thought you were more handsome. After all, I had a crush on you back then."
Silas Sheffield’s lips curved into a fleeting smile.
"Sophie really likes him. When she confessed to Preston Pierce after the college entrance exams and was mercilessly rejected, she cried all night and said she would never believe in love again, never like anyone again."
Silas Sheffield chuckled, "I wondered why she insisted on studying abroad. Turns out, she was heartbroken."
Talking about this, Clara Sterling sighed, "I thought she and Preston Pierce wouldn’t have any follow-up. I didn’t expect them to end up together four years later."
As she spoke, Clara Sterling leaned on Silas Sheffield’s shoulder, speaking softly, "We ended up together too, it’s wonderful."
The driver listened to the conversation between the family head and the madam, subconsciously glanced at the rearview mirror, noticing that the usually deep and stern eyes of the boss were now filled with affection.
The villa at The Ripplewood Estate was purchased by Silas Sheffield as their matrimonial home right after they got their marriage certificate.
Shortly after buying it, Clara Sterling accompanied her mother to Veridian.
Silas Sheffield stayed mostly in Veridian to see her frequently.
The house at The Ripplewood Estate was vacant but regularly cleaned. When they returned home, the place was clean and tidy, but lacked a lived-in feel.
This villa was the king of the neighborhood, offering great views and exceptional river scenery.
After showering, Clara Sterling saw the study room door open, with Silas Sheffield inside working on his laptop.
She didn’t go in to disturb him, instead headed to the terrace to enjoy the night view.
The house overlooked the river, the evening river breeze dispelling the heat, bringing a coolness.
Clara Sterling leaned against the railing to enjoy the river view.
A glowing cruise ship slowly sounded its horn as it passed across the vast river, and in the distance on the other side, the bustling CBD was putting on a light show with its tall buildings.
This city where she lived for twenty years, she had never appreciated its night scenery so leisurely before.
Her life was simple back then, coming home from school to squeeze into a cramped rental apartment with her mom, eating her mom’s cooked meals, then heading to her room to do homework.
If the homework was done early, she’d watch TV with her mom. If late, she’d obediently wash up and sleep.
Occasionally, she’d help her mom with embroidery to make money to support the family.
Back then, driven by life, she had no leisure to admire the night view.
But having a loving mother, even a plain life felt happy to her.
Now being with Silas Sheffield made her happy too.
Without Silas Sheffield, she wouldn’t see such beautiful night views.
Both lifestyles were endowed with different happiness due to love.
Hands wrapped around her waist from behind, a man’s warm lips tenderly kissed her nape and earlobe.
Clara Sterling, just out of the shower, wearing only a thin silk camisole, her back against his heated chest feeling his warmth, her body slightly softened, "Finished your work?"
"Yeah." Silas Sheffield held her from behind, his chin lightly resting on her head, "Do you want to ride the cruise?"
Clara Sterling stayed in his embrace without turning back, "It’s late. I’m tired from traveling all afternoon. Let’s go next time."
"Alright."
