Chapter 201: Chapter 201: It’s All Clara’s Fault

Grandma indeed broke into a smile, patting Shannon Langley’s hand, "Good, good, Shannon has always been so well-behaved. Come on, everyone, into the house."

Clara Sterling walked into the house as well.

The air conditioning was on inside.

A cool breeze mixed with the fresh scent of mung beans greeted them.

A woman who appeared to be around fifty years old came out of the kitchen, carrying a warm yellow enamel basin filled with mung bean soup.

She placed the enamel basin on the coffee table in the living room and greeted them with a smile.

"Ah, Silas and Clara, you’re finally back! I’ve made mung bean soup for you, chilled it to beat the summer heat. Have some to cool off."

Silas Sheffield began to introduce Clara Sterling, "Aunt."

Clara Sterling smiled shyly, "Thank you, Aunt."

"Oh, no need to be so polite, we’re family."

Aunt smiled and took out a red envelope from her pocket, stuffing it into Clara Sterling’s hand.

"It’s our first meeting, here’s a little gift from your aunt. Don’t mind if it’s not much."

Clara Sterling symbolically refused, "Aunt, you’re too kind."

"Just accept it," Aunt said with a laugh. "We were all shocked when we heard Silas was getting married; this fellow never even had a girlfriend. Your grandma always worried he wouldn’t find a bride. Who would’ve thought he’d get married all of a sudden; what a pleasant surprise!"

Clara Sterling accepted the red envelope with a sweet smile, "Thank you, Aunt."

"You’ve got a good eye, choosing a wife who’s both beautiful and well-behaved," Aunt said to Silas Sheffield.

At that moment, Uncle came out from the kitchen wearing an apron, "We’ve been really looking forward to your visit, just finished stewing some pig’s trotters for you."

"This time, you’re not coming back alone; you remembered to bring your wife," Uncle joked.

Clara Sterling guessed this man must be Silas Sheffield’s uncle. Without waiting for Silas to introduce them, she proactively greeted, "Uncle."

The man turned to Clara Sterling with a cheerful smile, "Ah, Clara, this is your first time in the countryside. If you find anything uncomfortable, just let your aunt and me know. Our country house might not be as cozy as a big mansion in the city, but the whole family’s together, seeking lively company."

Clara Sterling smiled lightly, "Alright, Uncle."

Uncle then looked at Silas Sheffield, "You’ve finally relieved your grandma of a major concern. You wouldn’t know how thrilled she was to see your announcement video with Clara on TV; she didn’t sleep a wink all night, eagerly waiting for your visit."

The anniversary celebration of Sheffield Branch was widely reported across various media, even making it to television entertainment news.

The elderly don’t surf the internet or use smart phones, relying solely on TV for news.

Silas Sheffield was feeling down during the drive but seeing his long-unseen relatives lightened his mood, influenced by the atmosphere.

His brow relaxed, eyes softened, "I’ve been too busy lately, never had the time."

Shannon Langley watched the scene with clenched teeth.

Of course, she had also seen the announcement video.

"Uncle, Aunt, it’s been a while," Shannon Langley, dissatisfied with their focus solely on Clara Sterling, proactively greeted to shift their attention.

Uncle and Aunt suddenly remembered there was another person in the room.

Uncle: "Shannon, it’s been ages since your last visit to the countryside. Is work going smoothly?"

"Everything’s going well. Silas is always looking out for me, arranging help whenever there’s trouble. He’s really considerate."

Uncle didn’t catch on to Shannon Langley’s subtle sarcasm.

Clara Sterling and Aunt both picked up on it instantly.

The hint of manipulation almost seeped through her words. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺

Clara Sterling didn’t say anything; with Uncle, Aunt, and Grandma present, the atmosphere was delightful. She didn’t want to disturb it, merely sneering inwardly.

Aunt quickly glanced at Clara Sterling, worried she’d be jealous, swiftly changed the subject with a smile, "Don’t just stand there, take a seat."

Clara Sterling and Silas Sheffield sat together on the living room sofa.

Shannon Langley wanted to sit beside Silas on the other side but Aunt pulled her back, "Shannon, it’s been ages since I last saw you, I’ve really missed you. Tell me how life’s been in the city lately?"

Saying this, Aunt pulled Shannon Langley over to sit next to her.

Shannon Langley’s intention failed, left feeling upset but unable to show it overtly.

Pretending affection, she wrapped her arm around Aunt’s, faking closeness, "Aunt, I’ve missed you too. It’s been too long since I enjoyed your sweet and sour ribs."

Aunt playfully poked her forehead, teasing, "I bet you miss my sweet and sour ribs more than me!"

"Hehe, I miss both."

"Clara, do you like sweet and sour ribs? Aunt can cook it for you tonight," Aunt smilingly asked her, not neglecting Clara Sterling.

"I do."

Uncle cheerfully chimed in, "Your aunt’s sweet and sour ribs are delicious, and my stewed pig’s trotters aren’t bad either."

Aunt picked up the soup ladle from the enamel basin and served a bowl of mung bean soup to Clara Sterling.

"Clara, you must be tired from the journey. Drink some mung bean soup to beat the heat. We make it ourselves, not too sweet, not cloying."

"Thank you, Aunt." Clara Sterling accepted it.

Shannon Langley served herself a bowl with the ladle and handed it to Silas Sheffield, "Silas, you must be tired from driving too. Have a taste."

Aunt’s brow furrowed slightly.

Quickly regaining composure, she smiled, "Shannon, you must be tired from traveling too. Drink some first."

Seeing Silas Sheffield had no intention of accepting her bowl, Shannon awkwardly retracted her hand and drank a sip herself.

"Mm, Aunt, your mung bean soup is still as delicious as ever, pleasantly sweet."

Grandma watched this unfold from the other side.

She’d lived many decades, experienced much, and seen plenty.

Seeing Shannon Langley’s lack of boundaries in front of Silas and Clara, Grandma sensed something unusual.

Over the years, due to past events, Grandma felt guilt, making efforts with the Sheffield Family to compensate Shannon Langley.

Having watched Shannon grow up, Grandma cherished her like half a grandchild, always treating her well and fondly.

Previously, Grandma hadn’t noticed Shannon Langley’s feelings for Silas.

This time, Silas and Clara returned together, Shannon’s behavior made Grandma perceptive of her intentions.

Grandma affectionately held Clara Sterling’s hand, saying, "Clara, make yourself at home, you are family here as Silas’s wife."

Grandma’s words hit the mark perfectly.

Reassuring Clara or subtly reminding Shannon.

Sensitive Shannon felt instant displeasure upon hearing this, her smile cooling down.

She’d visited Grandma’s place numerous times.

Yet this visit felt different.

All because of Clara!

Without Clara, Silas wouldn’t neglect her, rush to define boundaries, and his family’s enthusiasm towards her wouldn’t wan.

It’s all Clara’s fault, stealing away her Silas, and taking the warmth that originally belonged to her!
