Chapter 72: Chapter 72: Playing the Tachi

Solren’s figure transformed into countless golden afterimages, enveloping Scorching Wings.

The Ultimate Advanced Combat Technique of Blade Light and Sword Shadow—Invincible Slash!

A technique born from countless hours of diligent practice and countless difficult attempts—one that shatters the limits of mortals!

Inconceivably swift slashes rained down on every part of the Giant Dragon. In a mere instant, Scorching Wings was assaulted by a thousand blades.

They tore through obsidian Dragon Scales, slashed through flesh that bled molten brimstone, and pierced the gaps between its talons...

Even a True Dragon, with reflexes seven times faster than a human’s, was unable to react for a moment. Only when the pain registered did he roar in furious disbelief:

"Is this your answer?! I had intended to remember your name, but an insolent, presumptuous whelp like you doesn’t deserve to leave even a trace of your existence behind!"

Scorching Wings beat its wings and took flight, whipping up a chaotic storm as it quickly chanted in the Dragon Language to cast enhancements upon itself.

Although Invincible Slash had successfully breached Scorching Wings’s defenses and caused the Legendary True Dragon pain, it was more of an insult than a real injury. The actual damage was extremely limited.

Even when doing nothing, a Legendary True Dragon’s Scale Armor possesses the innate property of the Invincible Barrier, which reduces the power of any physical strikes, slashes, or thrusts by at least half.

Furthermore, the Dragon God’s blessing, the Star of Demonic Disturbance, mitigated the vast majority of damage from Magic.

This was why Legendary True Dragons were said to be absurdly powerful; with both resistances maxed out, they were the very definition of an overpowered build.

Scorching Wings flew away from the ruins, mostly because it wanted to unleash its fury without restraint and avoid harming the other Giant Dragons of its Clan.

Solren had the same idea, so he slowed his pace, engaging Scorching Wings in a running battle. Legendary Powerhouses could already defy gravity, floating freely with ease, though not as naturally as a Giant Dragon.

The two Legends battled to the far reaches of the molten sky. Each shockwave from their fight seemed to churn the burning clouds—though most of it was pillars of fire spewed by Scorching Wings, as Solren focused more on evasion than attack.

This was on a completely different level from the battle on the ground.

"The Sword Saint class really relies on Invincible Slash to carry it."

Westheid remarked, watching the incredible scale of the battle between Solren and Scorching Wings.

At the Legendary Tier, the Sword Saint was a very mediocre class. A glass cannon with high attack and low defense, it would be considered bottom-tier if not for a god-like skill such as Invincible Slash.

"Brother, we don’t have time for you to be sentimental. If we don’t make a move, the Giant Dragons will completely overrun the Resistance Army."

Yolanda said, ruthlessly interrupting Westheid as he watched the spectacle.

The Giant Dragon Execution Officers who had accompanied Scorching Wings were busy slaughtering the Resistance Army. Despite the soldiers being hand-picked elites, they were barely holding on against the dragon horde.

Out of contempt for the Resistance Army’s lack of heavy weaponry, the Giant Dragons didn’t even bother using their aerial advantage, landing on the ground to rampage and tear through the ranks.

"You’re right. Since Sword Saint Solren is already putting his life on the line to buy us time, we must make every second count."

Only then did Westheid reluctantly pull his gaze away, focusing his attention on the battlefield at hand.

How much time Solren could buy was anyone’s guess. If he was willing to pay any price to stall, it could be anywhere from twenty minutes to three or four hours. It all depended on whether Scorching Wings wanted to expend the effort to finish him quickly.

During this precious window, Reiya had to slay as many Giant Dragons as possible, offering their flesh and souls to the Dragon Soul Furnace in exchange for the power to stand a chance against Scorching Wings.

"Let’s split up and find our own targets. We’ll try to inflict Severe Injuries on the Giant Dragons first, then have Reiya deliver the finishing blow."

"Understood, Brother."

"Got it, West."

After the Empowerment from the blood ritual, the three-person team was now the strongest force the Resistance Army had, aside from the Sword Saint himself. After all, their overall power level could likely rival the Hero Tier, having broken through the Tier restrictions of the Secret Realm Trial.

Even the overpowered Yonglan Knights couldn’t compare to them in terms of actual combat prowess. Without a doubt, every member of the team was capable of killing a Giant Dragon on their own.

Yolanda was the first to act. The platinum-haired girl immediately targeted a Giant Dragon that had taken the high ground, gliding as it unleashed its dragon breath.

She drew the sword at her waist, her cherry-red lips parting slightly.

"River of Qinghui: Falling Light."

"River of Qinghui: Sky-Cleanser."

She swung her blade with incredible speed, and in an instant, flashes of dark purple and pale cyan sword light shot forth.

The former instantly slowed the Giant Dragon, while the latter cleanly tore through its vital muscles and joints, causing the beast, which had just been about to unleash its breath, to lose its balance and plummet from the sky.

As the Giant Dragon fell, a Dragon Thunder Spear that Reiya had been steadily gathering was hurled directly into its path.

SWOOSH—

The pure Dragon Thunder streaked past, seeming to devour all light in its path. This spear, which dealt an Eightfold True Damage Critical Strike to dragons, was no joke. It pierced through the Giant Dragon’s lower jaw and ran through its entire body, the berserk lightning greedily devouring its essence-rich flesh.

An instant kill!

"Beautifully coordinated."

Westheid remarked with admiration, glancing at how Yolanda and Reiya had insta-killed the Giant Dragon.

"I can’t fall behind, either."

Westheid drew a great Tachi that required two hands to wield. Its immense length and weight placed it far outside the category of conventional weapons, but it was perfectly suited for a target as large as a Giant Dragon.

The target he set his sights on was a Giant Dragon with pitch-black Scale Armor that had just stomped a Yonglan Knight flat.

There was no need for communication. On the battlefield, the only thing one could be certain of was the need to kill.

The ground-bound Black Dragon was incredibly fast, closing the distance to Westheid in the blink of an eye. It raised its head, intending to crush the tiny human with its immense bulk.

This was one of the most common ways Giant Dragons slaughtered humans; it had practically become an unthinking instinct for them.

Therefore, a specialist in Dragon Slaying Techniques would naturally have a counter for it.

In the instant the Black Dragon raised its long neck, just about to slam down, Westheid actually dropped to his knees with his back to the beast, sheathing his Tachi.

Then, at the very instant the Black Dragon slammed down, he drew his blade.

CLANG—

With a crisp clang of metal, Westheid slid backward in an arc as he swung his blade. The swift slash struck the Black Dragon square in the face. Unable to slice cleanly through the Dragon Scale, the great Tachi’s strike landed more like a blow from a blunt weapon, rattling the Black Dragon’s brain in its skull.

Foresight Slash! Reverse Sheath! Grand Iai!

And next... Ascending Dragon!

Taking advantage of the moment the Giant Dragon was stunned, Westheid dashed forward and plunged the tip of his blade into the front of its head.

Using the blade as a foothold, he launched himself high into the air, soaring directly over the Black Dragon.

Just as the Black Dragon recovered from its dazed Status and instinctively began to raise its head, Westheid came crashing down on top of it.

SQUELCH—

He put his true power behind this downward thrust. The great Tachi pierced straight through the most vulnerable part of the Black Dragon’s scales and scrambled its brains.

ROAR—

An agonized roar erupted from the Black Dragon’s mouth. The beast thrashed its head wildly, stumbling backward in a crazed frenzy.

’Fuck yeah! This feels even better than getting off!’
