Gamers Are Fierce-Chapter 73: Sets
Chapter 73: Chapter 73: Sets
At the corridor intersection on the second floor of Building A, Ao Yong’s expression was somber. He stared at Li Ang and Liu Wu Dai, who stood opposite each other on the third-floor corridor, his calloused fingers unconsciously brushing lightly across his screen.
He could understand why his teammates didn’t trust him. As a seasoned Lv6 player himself, Ao Yong had completed many regular and script missions. He’d encountered plenty of useless teammates, and even those who intentionally sabotaged the team.
If you’re going to throw a fit, don’t do it now! Ao Yong fumed internally. We’re so close to finishing the mission, why are you all suddenly acting like idiots?
Ao Yong glanced at the Plague Doctor standing in the distant first-floor corridor and gritted his teeth. He typed in the WeChat group: "I really didn’t sabotage anything. This pen has been in my pocket from the beginning. I probably broke it when I rushed to the basement to rescue the Plague Doctor and didn’t notice it until now. Forget it. If you don’t trust me, I can step back. You can go to the second floor and draw the last Talisman yourselves."
"No need for all that trouble," Li Ang called across the corridor. He and Liu Wu Dai exchanged a look, then picked up their phones. Li Ang typed unhurriedly, "I’ll throw down this Cinnabar Pen I have from the third floor to you. You can just copy the Talisman yourself."
Ao Yong narrowed his eyes and pondered for a moment before typing, "Okay, then throw it down, but make sure to aim carefully."
Li Ang sent an "OK" emoji, held the Cinnabar Brush in his hand, aimed carefully toward Ao Yong, and hurled it forcefully.
The bamboo pen somersaulted through the air. Just as it was about to land in front of Ao Yong, a deafening explosion erupted from above—the fifth floor of Building A!
The massive noise, accompanied by intense flames and brilliant light, illuminated the entire shopping mall, as well as the horrified faces of the four players below.
The Cinnabar Brush thrown by Li Ang was caught in the explosion’s blast wave. It spiraled downward and eventually landed in the ground-floor hall, shattering into two pieces.
What’s going on?! The thought flashed through their minds, but no one had time to dwell on it. Everyone was too busy staring up at the fifth floor to care about another broken Cinnabar Brush.
Floor after floor collapsed in a chain reaction, accompanied by loud CRASHES and flying debris. Dust filled the air. The Ghosts lingering in various parts of the mall heard the massive noise. Like piranhas smelling blood, they either took to the air, glided low, or leaped upward to the fifth floor of Building A, eager to witness the sound and light spectacle.
Among these Ghosts were the old scavenger who had occupied the body of the Lost Airship, the little girl with twin ponytails clutching a ball, and an incomplete corpse wearing only jeans, the rest of its skin ground to shreds.
The System had long warned players not to create loud sounds or bright lights; otherwise, they would be tailed by one or more Fierce Ghosts.
No single player could stand against a Fierce Ghost. So, what would happen when four players faced six Fierce Ghosts? The odds were they’d be wiped out on the spot.
"Where did that explosion come from?!" the Plague Doctor thought, both anxious and furious. He crouched down, hiding behind a glass billboard by the corridor wall, praying the Fierce Ghosts soaring high above wouldn’t notice him.
Unfortunately, while dreams can be comforting, reality is often harsh. After the fifth-floor explosion, the Fierce Ghosts, having lost their initial target, looked down. Their eyes, cold and full of resentment, soon fixed upon the players below.
Especially the little girl playing with a ball. She floated in mid-air, tugged the hand of an adult female Ghost beside her, and pointed at Li Ang in the third-floor corridor of Building A.
Although the distance was too great for Li Ang’s lip-reading skills to be effective, he could roughly guess what the little girl was saying: Mommy, that’s the one! He bullied me!
It was just like the saying: "Bully the cub, and the parents will come." Having picked on the bratty kid, he now faced the wrath of her parent. Well, that figures, Li Ang thought with a grimace.
A headache began to throb in Li Ang’s temples. Disregarding any restrictions on sound or light, he pulled a steel rod as thick as a bowl from his backpack and violently slammed it into the ground. With a loud BANG, the limestone floor shattered into several pieces.
Leaning on the steel rod, he gestured with a defiant flourish towards the female Ghost floating in the air.
The Ghost Lolita and Ghost Mama exchanged a smile. Hand in hand, their figures suddenly stretched and contorted, becoming pliable like noodles as they swooped down toward Li Ang with eerie agility.
The wind howled mournfully, but its sound was drowned out by the piercing, cold wails of the two female Ghosts—one large, one small. "AAAAAHHHHH—"
As if to vent all their pain and anger, the jaws of the two female Ghosts stretched to extreme lengths, nearly dislocating. Their mouths gaped unconsciously, each one large enough to swallow a gas cylinder whole.
Li Ang’s ears rang with a deafening boom. A succession of fragmented images flashed before his eyes, but he couldn’t recall a single one.
"SCRAM!" he roared. His Cat’s Eye ability activated instantly, shattering the illusions before him. Simultaneously, he channeled a burst of Ripple Energy into the steel rod and swung it like a baseball bat at the swooping mother-daughter Ghosts.
The mother-daughter Ghosts reacted with incredible speed. Just as they were about to collide with the Ripple Energy-infused steel rod, their forms twisted violently. They contorted their bodies into the shape of a long serpent, narrowly evading the strike.
His strike missed. Li Ang took a deep breath, slightly relaxing his grip on the middle of the steel rod before yanking it back, regripping it at the very end.
He spun around. Trusting his intuition rather than his eyes, he executed a wild, fierce sweep with the steel rod.
The steel rod whistled through the air, momentarily creating a vacuum in its path. The Ghost Lolita was forced back half a step, but the Ghost Mama, instead of retreating, pressed forward. Nimbly evading the rod, her arms—as if possessing minds of their own—transformed into slender, serpentine shapes and silently coiled around Li Ang’s arm.
So cold! Li Ang’s entire right arm felt as if it had been sprayed with liquid helium. It went instantly numb, its healthy rosy color replaced in the blink of an eye by a ghostly blue.
If this goes on any longer, he thought, my arm will shatter into a million pieces.
The Ripple Breathing Method activated instantly. Vitalizing and potent Ripple Energy surged through his arm, momentarily repelling the female Ghost.
Meanwhile, Chai Cuiqiao, who had been expelled from Li Ang’s body by the Ripple Energy, also sprang into action. She manifested six additional arms, her palms transforming into blades as she slashed at the Ghost Lolita.
Li Ang and Chai Cuiqiao barely managed to hold back the two Fierce Ghosts, but the situation for their comrades was far from optimistic.
Liu Wu Dai was firing Arrows at a rapid pace, nearly one every half-second. Her Arrows embedded themselves deeply into the walls and floor. Yet, the suit-wearing Ghost before her moved like an ethereal phantom, effortlessly evading every Arrow. It coolly waited for Liu Wu Dai’s forehead to bead with sweat and her arms to tremble from fatigue.
Ao Yong and the Plague Doctor were also being pursued by Ghosts, forced to leap and dodge, looking utterly flustered.
They were all fighting their own battles, and under the sustained assault, the situation looked dire; a team wipe seemed imminent. Ao Yong, swinging his fists to temporarily force back the attacking Ghosts, roared, "Get over here with me! I have a way to hold them off!"
