Chapter 10 - Forge of Power

The air above the slums hung heavy with the harsh smell of burnt metal and rotting waste. The rift had expanded, a jagged tear sparkling faintly violet against the night sky, pulsing with energy that twisted everything in its vicinity. Small piles of garbage nearby began to shift and change, feeding the anomaly as if it were alive. Rai Ichiro stood at the edge of a crumbling rooftop, Yuki pressed against him, her small body trembling yet oddly calm. Her eyes reflected the eerie green glow that had appeared the night before.

The system pulsed insistently in his peripheral vision, a cold, mechanical voice breaking the tension.

[Rift Chain Quest – Stage 3 Initiated]

[Objective: Integrate weapons with Garbage Absorption for combat synergy.]

[Secondary Objective: Neutralize multiple corrupted nodes.]

[Danger Level: A+ | Estimated Monster Strength: Lv. 12-15.]

Rai flexed his hands, the rusted gauntlet glowing softly as lines of energy moved across its surface. He adjusted his weight, feeling the balance of the iron sword on his back. His body thrummed with the energy of absorbed garbage, his muscles charged with potential. Each movement was precise. The gauntlet and sword were not just weapons; they were channels for the system’s power, conduits for the waste energy he had been absorbing over the past few weeks. The system urged him to combine their functionality, and he felt the potential for destruction gathering in his hands.

Nearby, Crow paced, snarling. The temporary truce with Renji had shattered. Crow’s gang had started looting abandoned parts of the slums again, driven by greed and the chaos around the rift. “You think you’re the only one who can play with toys, trash boy?” he spat, waving a crude iron pipe. His voice was rough and threatening, yet he flinched when a low rumble roared from the rift, shaking the rooftop tiles beneath them.

Renji stood a few meters away, fire flickering nervously on his knuckles, his gaze sharp. “Don’t get cocky,” he said to Crow, though his eyes kept darting to Rai. “This isn’t a playground. One misstep, and we all get swallowed.”

Rai ignored them both, concentrating on the system’s instructions. He reached out his left hand, letting the Automatic Garbage Absorber sweep across the nearby debris. Twisted metal, shattered wood, broken stones, and even pieces of corrupted awaken-stone shards were drawn in, orbiting around him like a living shield. The system pulsed a notification.

[Integration Ready – Gauntlet & Sword Fusion Available.]

[Warning: Requires full concentration and exposure to node energy.]

He adjusted his stance, focusing all his energy on synchronizing his weapons with the absorbed power. The gauntlet’s glow intensified, lines of energy spiraling around his forearm, merging with the vibrating resonance of the iron sword. Sparks flew along the edge of the blade as the fusion completed; a hum of raw power filled the night.

[System Update – Weapon Synergy Achieved]

[New Active Skill: Trash Reaper – Combine strike channels absorbed garbage and node energy.]

[Passive Bonus: 25% increased damage to corrupted nodes and monsters.]

Rai flexed his fingers. The energy coursing through him was exhilarating, a blend of raw strength and the calculated force of countless recycled scraps. He could feel every piece of debris around him, every fragment responding to his command. The rift pulsed violently, as if aware of the transformation, sending ripples of energy that made the air vibrate and the ground shake beneath them.

Yuki’s small hand tightened around his arm. “Rai... it’s getting stronger,” she whispered, her voice barely audible but shaking. Her eyes seemed to pierce through the rift, sensing currents of corrupted energy before anyone else could. Rai glanced at her, realizing her latent connection had significantly increased. She was attuned to the rift itself, sensing its power flow in ways he couldn’t yet comprehend.

From the alleys below, smaller corrupted creatures began to emerge, drawn by the growing instability. They were grotesque, made of twisted metal and sludge, crawling forward with jerky, unnatural movements. Rai tightened his grip on his newly integrated weapons, getting ready.

Crow and Renji exchanged tense looks. “We... can’t handle all of them,” Crow muttered, clutching his pipe. “We need him.”

Renji’s jaw set. “Looks like we have no choice. But don’t get in my way, trash boy.”

Rai didn’t respond. He leaped from the rooftop, using the Automatic Garbage Absorber to clear a path of debris below, forming a landing zone and a temporary shield against the creatures. The creatures lunged at him in synchronized waves, but Rai moved with a grace and precision that seemed almost unnatural. The Trash Reaper skill surged within him as he struck—the gauntlet smashing into one creature while the sword sliced through another mid-air. Debris from the battle was absorbed instantly, feeding his energy and expanding his protective field.

The creatures fell one after another, their bodies collapsing into piles of useless garbage that he could absorb with a thought. The synergy of his weapons enabled him to strike multiple targets with deadly efficiency. Crow and Renji struggled to keep up, forced into defensive positions as Rai commanded the battlefield with a precision that was almost terrifying.

The system pulsed again, giving him updates about the remaining corrupted nodes. Six nodes had been detected in the immediate area, each radiating increasing levels of energy. Some nodes were unstable enough to release minor monster waves without warning. Rai calculated their paths and positions, realizing he could take out two nodes at once if he timed his strikes perfectly.

He sprang into action, launching himself toward the first two nodes, activating his Trash Reaper skill. The integrated weapons directed the absorbed garbage and residual node energy into a massive, sweeping strike that severed both nodes simultaneously. The rift pulsed in response, like a living entity recoiling in pain, and the air itself vibrated with a new intensity.

Yuki’s eyes widened, her voice trembling. “Rai... it’s... so bright...”

He glanced at her and offered a reassuring smile, though his body pulsed with effort. Every strike required precise control; every movement drew from the Automatic Garbage Absorber, and each choice carried the weight of life and death—not just for him, but for the slums, the people, and especially Yuki.

The creatures pressed forward relentlessly, surging from the remaining nodes with renewed aggression. But Rai’s new synergy let him control the battlefield. He could feel the Automatic Garbage Absorber pulling in even distant debris, readying it as ammunition for his Trash Reaper strikes. The gauntlet and sword now worked together seamlessly—each blow precise, each parry efficient, and each absorbed scrap fueling the next hit.

The rift shook as Rai approached the final node, corrupt energy boiling like a storm kept in a bottle. He felt the system pushing him, forcing him to make a critical choice. Strike too early, and the node might explode violently. Wait too long, and the rift’s energy could overwhelm him.

He looked at Yuki again. Her glowing eyes showed both fear and determination. Her connection to the rift was a guide now, subtle but powerful. She pointed toward a specific angle where the node’s energy pulse was weakest. Rai nodded, trusting her instinct.

He focused fully, integrating every ounce of system power and weapon synergy, then unleashed the Trash Reaper skill with a full-force strike. The gauntlet smashed into the node while the sword arced in a wide, radiant sweep. The impact sent a shockwave through the slums, tossing debris, scattering the corrupted creatures, and shaking the remaining nodes violently. The node shattered, unleashing a flood of absorbed energy that he reclaimed instantly with the Automatic Garbage Absorber.

Rai’s body shook from the sheer energy of the strike, but the rift’s pulse had weakened. The corrupted nodes in the slums were significantly diminished, though not entirely neutralized. Crow and Renji stared at him, a mix of fear, awe, and disbelief on their faces. Their temporary alliance had held, but both now realized Rai was something far beyond what they had imagined.

Yuki looked at him with wonder. “Rai... we did it,” she whispered, her voice filled with awe rather than relief. Her connection to the rift pulsed subtly in response to the diminished energy, guiding Rai toward the next challenge.

Rai took a slow breath, looking over the slums, the debris, and the faint remnants of corrupted energy. This was just the start. The system had pushed him into a crucible, and he had come out stronger, forging power from trash, chaos, and corrupted energy alike.

Above, the rift shimmered faintly, still pulsing, still dangerous, but its hold had weakened. Rai knew that tomorrow would bring even greater challenges, but for now, he had accomplished what seemed impossible—a temporary reprieve, a forge of power that would shape the battles yet to come.
