Garbage Warrior System-Chapter 5 – Slum Shadows
Chapter 5 – Slum Shadows
The city’s underbelly was alive with the stench of smoke, sweat, and hopelessness. Rusted sheets of metal clanged in the wind as Rai Ichiro carefully treaded down the narrow, mud-stained alleyways of the slums. The echoes of merchants haggling over scraps and children crying from hunger mixed with the bitter air. To most, this was just another day in the wasteland of forgotten lives. But for Rai, returning here after what had transpired with the Golem, it felt like stepping back into a smaller cage after briefly tasting freedom.
The system window had vanished from his vision hours ago, leaving only the weight of its rewards embedded deep inside his body. His muscles pulsed with hidden strength, his veins hummed with newly awakened energy, and in his mind, the lingering whisper of the skill echoed— [Automatic Garbage Absorber – Level 1].
It terrified him and thrilled him in equal measure. At just a thought, the world’s filth could become his fuel. Already he could sense faint particles tugging toward him as if the garbage littering the streets themselves longed to vanish into his being. But he suppressed it, keeping his head low. This was not the place to reveal power. Not here, in the shadows of the slums where greed was sharper than hunger and envy could kill faster than a monster’s claws.
As he approached the rusted shack he called home, a fragile voice pulled him back from his spiraling thoughts.
“Rai? Is that you?”
Yuki Ichiro stood in the doorway, her silver hair dimmed by dirt yet still shimmering faintly in the sunlight. Her wide eyes lit up the moment she saw him, her frail arms reaching out. She had always been his anchor, his reason to keep breathing when the world wanted him to suffocate.
Rai’s hardened expression melted instantly. He stepped inside, lowering himself to Yuki’s level and brushing a stray strand of hair from her forehead. “I’m back, Yuki. Did you behave while I was gone?”
She pouted, her cheeks puffing slightly. “Of course! But you smell weird... like dust and burnt stone.”
A faint chuckle slipped from his lips. “Just had to run some errands.” He didn’t dare mention monsters, Golems, or the strange system that had bound itself to his soul. Yuki was too young to carry such burdens.
He prepared a small meal from stale bread and boiled roots scavenged from the market. Yuki happily nibbled while humming a tune, her innocent smile making the miserable food taste like a feast. Yet even as Rai forced himself to eat, the tension in his chest wouldn’t fade.
The slums were never safe. And tonight, they would prove it once again.

The first sign came when shouting erupted three houses down. A crash followed, then the cry of a man pleading for mercy. Rai’s body tensed instinctively. Through the thin walls, he could hear footsteps pounding closer, louder, heavier.
Then came the voice.
“Get out here, rats! This territory belongs to me now!”
Yuki flinched at the harsh tone. Rai immediately placed himself in front of her, his hand clenched tightly. He knew that voice all too well. Crow—the self-proclaimed ruler of the slums.
Crow was a towering figure draped in a ragged black coat, his face scarred, his grin twisted. Behind him trailed half a dozen thugs armed with pipes, blades, and crude clubs. They thrived on extortion, feeding on the weak, and punishing anyone foolish enough to resist.
Crow’s boots thudded against the dirt road as he approached Rai’s shack. He sneered, scanning the narrow alley like a predator scenting blood.
“Well, well, look who we have here. The little orphan boy who thinks he’s too good for us. Where’s your tribute, Ichiro? Don’t tell me you forgot again.”
Rai’s jaw tightened. Tribute meant food, money, or anything of value. And he had nothing to give. Every scrap he earned went into keeping Yuki alive.
He straightened his shoulders, hiding the storm inside him. “I have nothing for you.”
Crow’s grin widened cruelly. “Then maybe I’ll take something else.” His gaze shifted to Yuki, who shrank behind Rai, trembling.
The world slowed. Rage erupted in Rai’s chest like a wildfire. For a split second, he felt the system’s hum respond to his fury, urging him to unleash his hidden strength, to drain the garbage strewn across the alley and crush these vermin.
But he couldn’t. Not yet. Revealing the system here would invite endless suspicion. The wrong eyes would notice, and Rai couldn’t protect Yuki if hunters, guilds, or worse—academy officials—came for him.
So he forced his voice to stay steady. “Touch her, and I’ll kill you.”
Crow chuckled darkly. “Big words for a gutter rat.” He gestured, and two of his men lunged forward, swinging their clubs.
Rai moved faster than they expected. His body, strengthened by the system, reacted like a predator’s. He sidestepped the first strike, grabbed the attacker’s wrist, and twisted until bone cracked. The thug screamed. Rai shoved him into the second, sending both sprawling to the dirt.
The crowd of onlookers gasped. Yuki’s eyes widened with awe and fear.
Crow’s smile faltered for the first time. His voice turned sharp. “You’ve been hiding something, boy.”
Before Rai could respond, another voice cut through the tense air—a mocking, familiar tone that chilled him to the bone.
“Well, isn’t this a surprise. The trash boy actually knows how to fight.”
Rai’s blood ran cold as he turned to see Renji Kuroda striding into the alley. The academy bully, clad in clean clothes that marked him as far above the slum’s filth, sneered with pure disdain. Behind him, two academy cronies followed, their smirks dripping with arrogance.
Renji’s eyes gleamed with recognition. “I knew you were scum, Ichiro. But now... this is interesting. Maybe you’ve been hiding some kind of power? Or maybe...” His gaze flicked to Yuki. “...you’ve just gotten desperate.”
The tension doubled. Now Rai stood between two predators—Crow, the tyrant of the slums, and Renji, the academy bully who held authority in a world Rai had no power to challenge openly.
Yuki clutched his sleeve, whispering, “Rai... what do we do?”
Rai clenched his fists, forcing his breathing calm. He couldn’t reveal the system. He couldn’t fight recklessly. Every move had to protect Yuki while keeping his secret buried.
Crow spat on the ground, glaring at Renji. “This is my turf, academy brat. Stay out of it.”
Renji smirked. “And what are you going to do about it, old man? Step aside before I report your little gang to the hunters.”
The air grew heavier. Rai knew a clash was coming. And in that storm, he would be caught, whether he liked it or not.
But as he stood there, shielding his sister, the system’s faint whisper returned, invisible to all but him.
[New Quest Generated— Protect Yuki and Survive the Night.]

Rai exhaled slowly, eyes narrowing. The night was far from over.
