Selena rolled her newly reset shoulder once, testing it, then spat another thick glob of crimson to the side and straightened.

BOOM-

Crimson ether erupted beneath her feet, launching her forward.

Her silhouette blurred, her outline tearing into streaks of blood-light as she dashed.

Brandon raised his arm, but she was already above him.

Twisting in mid-air, Selena drove her heel down toward the top of his skull like she was trying to cave it in.

BANG-!!

Brandon lifted one hand and caught her ankle.

The shockwave rippled, kicking up dust around him in a perfect circle.

Selena’s eyes widened as she hung suspended upside-down, pain shooting up her leg from the grip.

But in the next instant, back-red lightning exploded from her leg as she contorted like a snake.

KA-CRACK-!!

Her heel flipped, her knee snapped downward, and her other leg whiplashed toward his temple.

Brandon tilted his head slightly, and her kick missed by a hair.

Gripping her ankle tightly, he spun and threw her away.

*woosh*

Selena’s body spun like a kicked ragdoll, and her body slammed into the ground ten meters away, rolling across the sand before skidding to a stop.

The audience erupted with even more cheers.

"HOLY-"

"HE YEETED HER!"

Selena forced herself to her knees, coughing violently as blood splattered onto the sand in thick droplets.

She wiped her mouth and looked up, and despite the pain, she smiled faintly.

Crimson ether rushed out of her legs, and in the next instant, she dashed forward.

*fween*

Like a blizzard, she appeared in front of him and pulled back her fist to punch.

*swoosh*

But before she could punch, Brandon’s right hand snapped up, fingers closing around her throat.

He lifted her clean off the ground with one arm, as she kicked her heels uselessly.

For a second the arena saw Selena dangling like a ragdoll, with her blood dripping from her chin onto his fingers.

Then he pivoted and slammed her back-first into the sand hard enough to carve a crater.

BOOM.

A perfect circle of sand exploded outward in a ring, the shockwave rattling the barrier again.

"Guagh-" Selena coughed in pain and her ribs heaved, but her hand was already clawing for his wrist.

Crimson ether flared along her nails, and she tried to crush his wrist.

But he didn’t even flinch.

Instead, he squeezed her throat tightly, making her body shudder in pain.

"A-Argh..."

He released her throat, grabbed her by the front of her torn collar, and hurled her straight upward.

Selena shot thirty meters into the air, her limbs windmilling.

Blue ether discs appeared in the air, and he used them to jump from one disc to another quickly.

*swoosh* *swoosh*

He met her at the apex and drove his fist into her stomach hard enough to fold her in half.

Air exploded from her lungs in a soundless scream.

They hung suspended for a single frozen second, hundreds of people watching him and the blood-soaked Selena outlined against the arena lights.

Then Brandon spun mid-air and axe-kicked her back down.

"Guagh-"

Selena’s body hit the arena floor like a meteor.

KKRRRAAAAA-BOOOOOM!

The impact cratered the center of the ring five meters deep.

Reinforced wards screamed, and several floating lanterns overhead detonated in showers of sparks.

A visible shockwave rolled across the sand, forcing even the front-row spectators to shield their faces.

Dust and debris hung thick in the air.

When it finally cleared...

Selena lay in the bottom of the crater, one arm twisted at an unnatural angle, some of her clothes shredded, and blood pooling beneath her.

Her chest rose and fell in shallow, ragged gasps.

But her eyes were still open.

Still looked on as Brandon landed lightly at the crater’s edge beside her.

She tried to push herself up, but her broken arm gave out instantly.

Still, she laughed, "Again..." she croaked, blood bubbling at her lips. "One... more..."

Brandon looked down at her for a long moment, then he glanced toward the referee platform.

Selena’s fingers dug into the cracked floor, nails scraping as she tried again to push herself upright.

Her arms trembled violently, every muscle in her body screaming at her to give up, but she was stubborn.

"You’re going to die if you keep this up," Brandon said quietly.

Selena only spat a thin string of blood onto the ground and grinned wider, her teeth stained with red blood.

"I said... one more."

Brandon stepped forward, and the sand crunched under his boots as he crouched at the crater’s edge.

He watched her for a long second, eyes narrowing as he tried to read the madness shimmering behind her pupils.

Then... Her aura flared violently.

A burst of black-red ether erupted from her body, sending cracks spiderwebbing deeper into the crater.

The air warped from the sudden pressure, and Brandon raised an arm to shield his face ’Again... I am getting that weird feeling. what’s up with her.’

Selena’s back arched and her chest heaved as her broken limbs twitched like a puppet on frayed strings.

Her wounds glowed crimson from the inside out, and the blood on her skin almost evaporated in the heat of her aura.

"What even are you..." Brandon muttered as the crater began to pulse.

Selena’s body was pulled upward as the black-red ether wrapped around her.

Her feet barely touched the ground, yet she floated unevenly, swaying like something was holding her spine taut.

Her voice was calm despite the injuries on her body "We’re not done yet... Brandon Kael."

Her shadow elongated unnaturally beneath her, stretching across the crater floor like a living stain.

The runes crawling up her arms flared so bright they cast sharp red lines across her bruised skin.

Brandon exhaled slowly, bracing himself as his own ether began to flow out.

A blue ripple flashed across his eyes for an instant ’I don’t know what is happening... but let’s see what it is; bring it on.’

The teachers outside the barrier stiffened as the pressure in the arena doubled in an instant.

A few even reached forward, their fingertips brushing the barrier, debating whether they should intervene.

Even the spectators fell silent as they felt like this was no longer an Academy match, it felt like watching two creatures, not two students.

Selena tilted her head, her neck popping audibly "You’re holding back... I can feel it."

Brandon let out a soft sigh "And you’re losing control it seems. If I hit you again like before, you won’t stand up."

Selena’s smile widened until her cheeks split again "That’s fine."

Crimson lightning erupted from her back, arcing across the crater like whips of burning energy.

Selena’s head snapped up as she looked into his blue eyes "Come on... Brandon..."

A thunderous crack split the air as she launched toward him again, faster than before.

Her body blurred into a streak of crimson shadow rushing straight at him.
