Chapter 405: Rupture zone [1]

Walking through the dimly lit corridor, Brandon murmured under his breath, "Room number four..."

He stopped in front of the door marked with a small silver plaque, pushed it open, and stepped inside.

Naevora was lounging on the wide couch that faced the massive glass wall overlooking the arena floor, showing the current ongoing match.

She had a slice of watermelon in one hand, its juice glistening on her fingers as she took a lazy bite.

She glanced up as he entered.

"Brat."

Brandon closed the door behind him with a soft click and dropped onto the couch beside her.

Before she could even say anything, she lay down, resting his head comfortably on her thighs.

Naevora paused mid-bite, but she didn’t push him away.

She shifted slightly, adjusting her position so his head settled more easily against her thighs.

Brandon exhaled, closing his eyes for a moment.

"Comfortable?" Naevora asked dryly, taking another bite off the watermelon.

"Very," he murmured, turning his face slightly into the warmth of her thigh.

For a few minutes, they stayed like that, with her watching the matches below and him resting on her lap.

Eventually, she offered him the last piece of watermelon from her slice.

"Open your mouth."

He did, letting her feed it to him.

Seeing him eating the watermelon, her eyes softened, and she unconsciously patted his head.

Her eyes traced his face, and a faint smile appeared on her lips "Also, Brandon after the tournament is over, you are resuming your training in dungeons, right?"

Brandon swallowed the watermelon, nodding as he turned his head slightly to look up at her. "Yeah. I’ll be with you again."

"Mhm..."

As he was eating, the door opened as Yverine and Dhayun entered the room.

Hm? Looking up at them, Brandon pulled himself up and sat on the couch "Yve, Noona."

Yverine dropped onto the cushion beside him with a happy sigh, immediately leaning into his side.

Dhayun sat directly on his lap, looping her arms around his neck "Woonie."

Naevora frowned slightly, and a weird sense of discomfort crept into her heart because they disturbed her moment with him.

But she shook her head and continued eating the watermelon.

Meanwhile, Brandon wrapped his arm around Yverine’s shoulder, pulling her closer.

Dhayun just hummed, pressing a light kiss to his jaw.

With a dry smile, he whispered in her ear "Master is here... be a bit modest."

Looking at Naevora in the corner of her eyes, Dhayun replied "She also knows about our relationships, right? So it’s okay."

Naevora took another bite, and her eyes were fixed on the ongoing match below.

Her gaze narrowed slightly, and in her peripheral vision, she saw Brandon and Dhayun kissing passionately.

Seeing this, her lips twitched in exasperation ’This brat is boldly kissing in front of me. Does he even realize how embarrassing it is for me to sit here right now?’

She quickly glanced away, focusing on the match.

A few more minutes passed...

Yverine stood up first, stretching with a happy sigh "That was fun, but we need to train for our next round. So we are leaving, Brandon."

Dhayun also stood up, smoothing her clothes as she leaned down to press a quick kiss to Brandon’s cheek. "See you later, Woonie."

Brandon smiled, giving them both a lazy wave.

The two women left the room arm in arm, their soft laughter echoing down the hallway until the door clicked shut behind them.

Brandon glanced sideways at Naevora, who was still watching the match through the glass.

Without a word, he shifted on the couch and slowly leaned down, resting his head on her shoulder.

Her eyes flicked down to him for a brief moment before returning to the arena.

But then she suddenly remembered something and spoke "That reminds me, I heard that House Bleaufort is stepping down from the Five Great Houses."

Hearing this, he gave a nod "Yeah, Florence decided that..."

Naevora’s gaze condensed "Losing their old matriarch should be a big blow to them... but still, it’s not like they are out of power. I wonder why she decided to step down."

Brandon stretched his hands and wrapped his arm around her shoulder "Florence doesn’t want to deal with this ’noble’ bullshit anymore."

"She is even thinking about attending Solvyrn Academy as a professor."

Naevora was surprised to hear this "I see."

She stayed quiet for a moment before speaking "Also, there is an active Rupture Zone in Japan, which I took the task of clearing."

"Wanna join me this weekend?"

Brandon thought about it for a moment "This weekend... sure."

Naevora’s lips curved into a faint, satisfied smile "Good. It’ll be like old times. Just you, me, and a few hundred Abberants."

He chuckled softly "Looking forward to it."

---

A week had already passed.

Snow drifted down in thick, lazy flakes, blanketing the narrow pathway in a soft layer of white.

Brandon and Naevora walked side by side, their boots crunching through the fresh snow.

He was wearing a dark winter coat with the hood up and she was in her usual long leather coat lined with fur.

Brandon glanced up, watching the snow fall against the gray sky, a small smile tugging at his lips.

"I didn’t expect the rupture zone to be in a rural area," he said, his breath fogging in the air.

"This place looks like a small town."

Naevora nodded and replied "Mhm, active rupture zones are quite dangerous... because if you don’t clear them in time, the rupture will break and monsters will spawn out."

"That’s why there are no big settlements around such places, just some rural towns."

"Let’s see if there is a place to stay."

They walked on and the town was small with barely more than a handful of streets.

A few shuttered shops, a tiny shrine, and the occasional lantern swaying in the wind.

They checked every likely building to see if there is an inn or hotel.

Eventually, they came to the only building with lights glowing warmly, and Naevora noticed that it was a bathhouse.

Brandon pushed open the sliding door and a small bell tinkled overhead.

An older woman in a simple yukata stood behind the counter, folding towels.

She looked up with a kind smile "Welcome," she greeted softly.

"The baths are open, but we close soon."

Naevora stepped forward and asked in japanese "We’re looking for a place to stay the night. Is there anywhere in town?"

The woman’s smile turned apologetic and she shook her head. "No inns or ryokan open this time of year. Most people left long ago because of the rupture zone. It’s too dangerous."

Brandon and Naevora exchanged a quick glance.

The woman noticed their hesitation and clasped her hands together "But... if you don’t mind simple accommodations, we have an empty guest room upstairs. My husband and I live here alone now. You’re welcome to it. The baths are included, of course."

Brandon and Naevora hesitated again for a moment before Naevora spoke again "We’d be grateful. Thank you."

The woman gave a nod "Come, I’ll show you the room. And please, use the baths as long as you like. Dinner is simple, but you’re welcome to join us."

As they followed her up the creaking wooden stairs, Naevora glanced at Brandon with a faint, wry smile.

"Seems like we need to stay here for a while."

With a nod, he replied "It’s okay."
