Chapter 422: Annihilation of a Noble House [1]

The underground research facility sprawled like a labyrinth beneath the frozen hills.

Labs lined the corridors and glass walls revealing banks of humming servers, bubbling vats of ether-infused serums, and rows of surgical tables where "subjects" had once been strapped down for dissection.

Scientists in white coats moved with quiet efficiency, scribbling notes on tablets, monitoring vitals on screens, oblivious to the storm brewing above ground.

Suddenly, the alarms blared.

Red lights flashed across every screen, and sirens wailed, echoing through the corridors.

"Intrusion alert!"

The researchers were confused "What? How? Activate defenses!"

But it was too late.

The first breach came from the main elevator shaft.

BOOM

The doors exploded inward in a shower of metal and sparks.

Smoke billowed out as figures in black suits stormed through.

They were clad head to toe in tactical gear, and some were carrying suppressed submachine guns or stun batons crackling with ether.

"Go! Go! Go!" the lead operative yelled through a voice modulator.

"Our motive is to capture them, not kill them. If anyone used force or violence, kill them."

The researchers in the outer labs froze and turned toward the noise in horror.

A young woman in goggles dropped her clipboard, her mouth opening to scream.

One of them grabbed her arm, twisting it behind her back with a sharp crack that made her yelp.

"Augh, s-stop it."

Another swept her legs out from under her, dropping her to the tile floor with a thud.

The intruders quickly took zip ties and snapped them around her wrists and ankles.

A gag went over her mouth, muffling her cries.

"Target secured. Moving to next."

In the adjacent lab, a group of three scientists barricaded behind a console, frantically typing overrides to lock down the facility.

*THOOM* The door blew open. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

Three operatives burst in and shot their suppressors, *pfft-pfft-pfft* firing non-lethal rounds that hit with electric shocks, dropping two of the scientists on the floor.

The third researcher charged with a lab stool raised like a weapon.

The lead operative sidestepped and swung the baton in a low arc.

THUD

It connected with the researcher’s knee, shattering the bone.

"Guaaaghh-" She went down screaming, and the operative flipped her over before tying her.

"Clear. Three down."

Deeper in the facility, the chaos spread like wildfire.

One of the researchers pulled a hidden ether pistol from her coat pocket, firing wildly.

ZAP-ZAP

Violet bolts streaked down the hall.

An operative took one to the chest but kept advancing.

She fired again, but the operative dodged and closed the distance in three strides.

A punch to the gut doubled her over and a chop to the neck dropped her unconscious.

Quickly, they tied her up, too.

---

Meanwhile, standing on top of a frozen hill overlooking the sprawling research facility, Charlotte watched in silence.

The wind howled across the ridge, whipping her long coat around her legs.

Her breath fogged in slow clouds as she watched the black-suited operatives move like ants across the snow-covered grounds.

They carried the researchers over their shoulders, zip-tied and gagged, loading them into the waiting trucks.

At this time, she heard her mobile ringing and saw the name flasing ’Eldora’.

Charlotte answered, pressing the phone to her ear.

A woman’s voice exploded through the speaker "Charlotte? What the hell are you doing?"

"You moved military units and are seizing the Vernhail House’s public research facility?"

"Have you gone nuts? Even though you are an Empyrean, you can’t take military action against a great noble house on your own accord."

"There are treaties, protocols, and oversight. Do you have any idea what kind of diplomatic fallout this will cause? The Council is already-"

Charlotte ended the call and slipped the phone back into her pocket.

Then she glanced up at the sky.

*feeennn* Four fighter jets streaked overhead, circling around the research facility.

Soon, every researcher is taken into the trucks.

The black-suited operatives retreated to a safe perimeter, signaling all-clear.

Missiles streaked from under the jets’ wings as four bright streaks of white fire cut through the air.

The missiles struck the central building one after another.

BOOM—BOOM—BOOM—BOOM

The explosions lit up the valley like daylight.

The main lab complex erupted first, vaporizing in blinding orange fireballs, and the shockwaves rolled outward, flattening nearby outbuildings.

Secondary blasts followed as ether reactors overloaded and crimson flames twisted together in unnatural spirals.

The ground shook, and even the snow avalanched from the hillsides.

The facility collapsed in on itself as entire levels folded into burning craters.

Flames roared skyward, consuming years of research, data, bodies, and secrets.

Glancing at the wreckage, Charlotte’s gaze narrowed "Next on to her estate and other facilities."

---

"I don’t know where she is."

Sitting on the couch, Naevora replied, looking at Elize who was sitting opposite to her.

"She might be hiding in her private research facility, but I don’t know where that is."

"I was once experimented on there... but I don’t know its exact location."

With a deep frown, Elize sighed in her heart and leaned back against the couch.

Brandon, sitting on the armrest of Naevora’s couch, leaned forward slightly "Since killing me failed, she knows that Charlotte or Aunt Elize will try to kill her."

"So she must have thought of kidnapping Eira and Dhayun to keep them as hostages to save herself by threatening us."

Upon hearing this, Elize nodded her head "Yeah, that must be it."

"Well, Charlotte will soon find her and kill her. So for the time being, don’t let the girls outside."

---

Charlotte sat in the dimly lit chamber with her hands resting on the desk.

Before her, a massive holographic screen flickered as its edges pulsed with an eerie blue glow.

On the opposite side sat representatives from the other major factions... the Lionhearts, the Crimson Aegis, and the Whispering Veil, while the Asphodel Order is missing.

And even people from the other Great Noble Houses.

A screen flickered, and the image of Eldora, the current world leader appeared "...Charlotte, what are you doing?"

"I need an explanation."
