Getting Stronger By Fighting-Chapter 552 - 550 Beast Tide Attack_1
Wang Zhan cracked a smile and quickly made his way to Ye Chen, scooping up the food and starting to eat.
Although the flatbread Ye Chen had sent over was quite bland, it was better than nothing.
Old Mao stood motionless to the side.
He calmly watched Ye Chen for a while before asking, "What's the combat strength of the beasts in the Beast Tides that come here?"
Ye Chen shook his head helplessly and then said, "I have no idea of their true strength."
"What a bunch of useless fellows." Old Mao turned his face away, grumbling under his breath, "I knew it. You lot are nothing but a burden."
Ye Chen immediately lowered his head in embarrassment but did not respond.
They could also tell that Old Mao's combat strength was way out of their league.
Noticing the atmosphere growing awkward, Wang Zhan quickly stepped in to smooth things over. "Alright, stop complaining. If you're so formidable, tell us how strong you are."
"I am…" Old Mao's words trailed off. He didn't finish his sentence but glared at Wang Zhan and snapped, "Just eat your food! Where are all these unnecessary questions coming from?"
Wang Zhan grinned. But inside, his curiosity was piqued. He was increasingly curious about Old Mao's capabilities. Even though there was a gap between them, he at least needed to know how vast that chasm was.
Since Old Mao didn't think highly of Ye Chen, Ye Chen didn't linger after delivering the food and quickly retreated.
Wang Zhan, however, put down his food and walked over to Old Mao, grinning. "Come on, tell me, what level have you reached?"
"Why should I tell you?" Old Mao turned his face away again, huffily commenting, "But rest assured, no matter my level, I'm more than capable of protecting you."
"But let me warn you, I won't always be your hired muscle."
Wang Zhan grinned. Isn't having hired muscle for now good enough? After all, as long as he could defeat more formidable beasts, he could rapidly increase his level, and by then, even Old Mao might be shocked. Perhaps in no time at all, he would leave Old Mao in the dust.
At this thought, Wang Zhan suppressed a smile and then continued, "Alright, I agree. I won't have you following me around all the time, but shouldn't you show some sincerity? Like telling me… what exactly are you…" He looked at Old Mao curiously, awaiting his answer.
Old Mao hesitated for a moment before finally saying gravely, "Although I'm a cut above you, it's not by much. I'm just a Martial King."
Wang Zhan stared at Old Mao in shock. He could never have imagined Old Mao was so much stronger than him!
The difference between a Martial King and a Martial Arts Grandmaster was significant; the chasm between them couldn't be explained in a sentence or two.
At this, Wang Zhan gave Old Mao a thumbs-up, exclaiming, "I knew it! You're definitely not as simple as I thought!"
Old Mao gave a self-deprecating laugh. He was beginning to like Wang Zhan more and more. For some reason, spending time with Wang Zhan made his days seem unusually tranquil, to the point where he could even forget the dangers of the Star War Battlefield.
Thinking about this, Old Mao said, "Alright, I reckon you'll surpass me soon. I must say, your talent is indeed excellent. At such a young age, you're already in the late stage of a Martial Arts Grandmaster. I suppose it won't be long before you enter the Grandmaster realm, right?"
Wang Zhan shook his head and gave a self-deprecating laugh. Even though it looked straightforward, only he knew how difficult it truly was. After all, to break through to Grandmaster, he needed to utilize the System's mechanism. In other words, he had to consistently face opponents stronger than himself. But a moment of carelessness could lead to an accident. Then, it wouldn't just be about advancing—even escaping unscathed would become extremely difficult.
After this brief exchange with Old Mao, Wang Zhan felt more reassured.
Old Mao had reached the Martial King realm. That meant Wang Zhan could even take on a Martial King! Of course, with Old Mao by his side, even if he couldn't defeat an opponent, Old Mao would intervene and get him out of danger. That was what mattered most.
With this thought, Wang Zhan grinned and walked out.
Old Mao, apparently feeling his age, lay back down on the bed as soon as Wang Zhan left, ready for a restful sleep.
Wang Zhan began walking around the camp. It wasn't large, housing only about thirty people, most of whom were Martial Arts Grandmasters.
Only Ye Chen had reached the Grandmaster realm, but he was just a junior Grandmaster. There was still a world of difference between him and Old Mao.
Seeing Wang Zhan come out, Ye Chen immediately walked over to him, smiled, and said, "Why didn't you rest a little longer?"
Wang Zhan simply jerked his chin toward the tent before answering, "That old fellow has already fallen asleep, but I'm still young and don't need as much sleep."
"What about you? If you're too tired, want me to take your shift?"
"I'll let you know right away if anything happens?"
WHOOSH!
The moment he said this, everyone else's expression instantly soured, their gazes turning hostile as they all looked at Wang Zhan.
Wang Zhan looked at Ye Chen, completely baffled, clearly unaware of what he might have said wrong.
Ye Chen pulled him aside and explained, "Our current predicament arose because someone else covered my shift before. You just got here, and saying something like that could lead to misunderstandings."
Wang Zhan awkwardly scratched his head. He merely wanted to help but had no idea the consequences would be this severe. He was just making an offer. If these guys didn't want his help, wouldn't that save him some trouble?
"Aren't you worried we might actually be spies who've infiltrated this place?" Wang Zhan smirked, joking.
Ye Chen, however, instinctively glanced toward the tent and then grinned, "If it were you, perhaps we would be suspicious. But if it's the old fellow inside, there's no need for suspicion at all."
"After all, his strength far surpasses ours. If he decided to act, we wouldn't even be his match. So why would he need to waste time like this?"
Ye Chen wasn't joking about this; Old Mao did exert immense pressure on everyone.
This was easily explained. After all, Old Mao had already reached the Martial King realm, while in the camp, only Ye Chen had reached the Grandmaster realm. Compared to Old Mao, the gap between them was like an unbridgeable chasm.
Of course, even if everyone in the camp joined forces, they wouldn't be Old Mao's match. So why would he need to play games with them?
If he truly wanted to make a move, there wouldn't be anyone left alive in the camp.
One had to admit, Ye Chen's judgment was sound.
Wang Zhan grinned. "By the way, what realm are those creatures in?"
Only after a moment did Ye Chen grit his teeth and slowly answer, "Royal-level beasts…"
Wang Zhan's face filled with shock. He'd never expected to encounter such formidable beings here!
Yet, Ye Chen gave a self-deprecating laugh and said, "They're just royal-level beasts, the weakest on the Star War Battlefield. The truly terrifying ones aren't them…"
"But our cultivation levels are too low, so we can't encounter those yet."
Wang Zhan grinned; he naturally understood this. Above beasts were demonic beasts—those were the true masters of the battlefield.
But before he could speak, an ear-splitting roar suddenly thundered!
Immediately after, they heard someone shout, "Not good! The Beast Tide is attacking again!"
Wang Zhan's gaze turned icy. Unbelievable! They had just arrived and were already facing a Beast Tide?
Ye Chen stood up immediately, his face resolute as he declared, "Everyone, prepare yourselves! We absolutely cannot lose this position, or the entire war situation will be greatly affected! Therefore, fight to the death—no retreat!"
Everyone roared in unison, "Fight to the death! No retreat!"
Just then, Old Mao, who had been sleeping in the tent, was startled awake. He emerged, glanced impatiently at the crowd, and then snapped, "Fight to the death? No retreat? With your abilities, you think you can hold off royal-level beasts?"
Utterly ridiculous!
Even Wang Zhan knew this clearly. How could royal-level beasts be so easy to resist?
His words immediately sparked discontent among many in the camp.
Everyone looked at Old Mao and began to clamor.
"If you don't want to help, then just leave!"
"That's right! We don't need your help!"
"Exactly! We'll all fight to the last breath!"
Ye Chen, standing to the side, looked at Wang Zhan. Though everyone was determined to fight to the death, minimizing casualties would undoubtedly benefit them all.
Wang Zhan glanced at Old Mao and said directly, "Alright, old fellow, stop your sarcastic remarks. You'll follow behind me. We'll go deal with that royal-level beast first!"
