Give Up, Mr. Lawyer! This is Not Your Child-Chapter 149: He Really Should Be Brought In for a Good Interrogation
Jean knelt down, looking into her daughter’s eyes, trying hard to keep her voice calm.
"Jesse, we’re not hiding from Uncle Holden. It’s just that there are some things between adults that need to be handled."
"These things are complicated, Jesse. You don’t need to think about it, just leave it to mom."
She patted Jesse’s hair.
"You just need to know, mom will always be with you, protecting you."
Jesse seemed to somewhat understand but still had unease in her eyes.
At this moment, Isabel Dalton took her coat from the rack by the door, wearing a frown.
"That Justin Holden, he’s certainly sharp to have found Captain Paxton here so quickly."
"You’re the captain of the criminal investigation team, and he found your place so easily?"
Her tone was filled with discontent and suspicion.
Philip Paxton walked to the window, ensuring once more that Justin Holden’s car had left, remarked in a low voice, "If he wants to investigate, he has ways. The law firm’s connections, paired with the Holden family’s resources, it might not even be illegal means."
Isabel Dalton snorted, speaking rapidly, "I doubt it, he might well have used some shady tactics. We really should bring him in for a proper questioning."
As she said this, there was a bit of defiance in her words.
Jean heard this, her face turning even paler, looking helplessly at Isabel Dalton.
Isabel caught sight of Jean’s reaction, hesitated a moment, then forced a smile, her tone lightening.
"Oh, I’m just kidding, look how scared you are. What is Justin Holden? A top lawyer, even if he did something, he surely cleaned up thoroughly, wouldn’t leave evidence for us to catch."
Jean managed a slight smile, but her inner worry didn’t lessen.
At this moment, Isabel Dalton’s phone rang.
She answered, "Hello? Yeah, got it, heading back now."
She hung up, telling Philip Paxton and Jean, "The office called, I’m on duty tonight, got to head back."
Philip Paxton nodded, "I’ll walk you downstairs."
The two walked out one after the other.
The corridor was dimly lit, the atmosphere a bit silent and awkward.
At the entrance, Isabel stopped, turned around, facing Philip Paxton.
She took a deep breath, speaking with a feigned lightness, "Captain Paxton, just forget about that night, don’t take it to heart. I get carried away with confessing when I drink."
Philip Paxton looked at her, saying nothing.
Isabel continued, speaking faster than usual, "I spontaneously confessed to you, and you refused. It’s no big deal. I, Isabel Dalton, am not someone who can’t let go. From now on, let’s just be as we were, still colleagues, still friends. I won’t hold grudges over this, so you don’t need to worry."
Philip Paxton nodded silently, only responding with two words, "Alright."
Isabel’s bright smile she tried to maintain momentarily stiffened upon hearing the "alright".
She quickly turned, waving, "I’m off, you head back up."
With that, she walked briskly toward the street, her pace quick as if eager to escape something.
Philip Paxton stood where he was, watching Isabel’s figure disappear into the night.
At the moment she turned, he clearly saw her smile crumble, replaced by a deeply concealed yet still revealing sense of loss.
A complex emotion swept through his heart, feeling his earlier response might have been too blunt, perhaps it really hurt her.
He stood downstairs for a while, before turning back upstairs.
Back inside, Jean had already soothed Jesse to sleep.
She stood in the living room, still looking somewhat uneasy.
"She left?" Jean asked.
"Hmm, on duty," Philip Paxton shortly replied, taking the coat draped over the back of the sofa, "It’s getting late, I should head back too. Lock the door tight, call me anytime if there’s anything."
Jean nodded, "Thank you, and Officer Dalton too, for everything today."
"No worries." Philip Paxton put on his coat, moving toward the door, "I’ll keep an eye on Justin Holden’s side. Be careful yourselves."
With that, he opened the door and went downstairs.
Once downstairs, his eyes instinctively glance towards where Isabel Dalton had left.
The street was empty, her silhouette long gone.
He sighed lightly, a strange sense of guilt lingering in his heart.
At that moment, walking quickly back to the precinct in the night wind, Isabel Dalton allowed tears to silently slip down.
She wiped away her tears forcefully, telling herself silently.
No big deal, it was just one rejection.
Only, the shame and heartache from that night were very real.
She vowed, it’s the first and last time.
In the morning, while organizing materials, Jean dialed Jules Ellison’s number.
"Cousin, I’m going to the visa center today to handle the American visa, the process is quite cumbersome, probably will take all day, could you help watch Jesse for a day?"
On the other end, Jules cheerfully agreed, "Sure, go ahead, leave Jesse to me."
Jean breathed a sigh of relief but did not forget to remind, "Cousin, please remember, don’t take Jesse outside. Just stay home and play. I’m worried about being seen by Justin Holden or his firm’s people."
Jules replied, "Got it, don’t worry, we’ll stay put."
After hanging up, Jean carefully instructed Jesse to listen to her aunt before hurrying out the door.
Initially, Jesse and Jules played puzzles and read picture books at home, keeping calm.
But by afternoon, Jesse began to get restless, leaning on the windowsill, peeking at the sunny outdoors, twisting her body to sweet-talk Jules.
"Auntie, let’s go out and play for a bit, just for a while, I really want to go out for ice cream."
Jules initially insisted, "No, mom said we can’t go out."
But Jesse was relentless, clinging to her leg, with tears brimming in his big eyes, pitifully saying, "Aunt, please, just for a little while, I’ll come back right after the ice cream, Mom won’t know."
Jules Ellison looked at Jesse’s aggrieved expression and her heart softened.
She thought, "It’s broad daylight, just going to the children’s restaurant in the nearby mall, going quickly and returning quickly, surely it wouldn’t be such a coincidence to meet acquaintances, right?"
"Alright, alright," Jules compromised, "It’s agreed, just go for some ice cream, and come back home immediately after eating."
Jesse immediately burst into smiles, cheering.
Jules took Jesse to a children’s themed restaurant inside a large mall near their home.
Jesse happily ate his ice cream while Jules watched her phone nearby.
However, the very thing she feared happened.
Just as they were finishing up and ready to leave, at the restaurant entrance, they ran into Leah Sutton, who was walking in surrounded by servants and bodyguards.
Leah’s belly was obviously swollen, she was wearing expensive maternity clothes, yet she didn’t look very well.
She immediately spotted Jules and Jesse, a hint of surprise flashed across her face, and then she put on a formulaic smile to greet them proactively.
"Oh, isn’t this Mrs. Jennings and Jesse? What a coincidence, wasn’t it said that Jesse and Jean Ellison went to Gresten?"
Jules feared the worst, instinctively pulling Jesse slightly behind her, squeezing out a polite smile on her face.
"Miss Sutton, what a coincidence, we are about to leave, it’s just a matter of days."
Leah’s gaze lingered on Jesse’s face for a moment, then shifted to Jules, her tone carrying a hint of probing.
"Why are you two alone? Where’s Jean?"
Jules didn’t want to reveal too much and vaguely replied, "She’s busy with something."
Leah turned her eyes thoughtfully and did not continue to ask.
She smiled, seemingly casually asking, "Why didn’t President Jennings come out with you, oh, I remember, he’s probably at home drinking herbal medicine again."
Ian Jennings’ mother often fed the young couple herbal medicine, forcing them to drink it, which was well-known in upper-class circles, and Jules often became the dinner talk of the wealthy lady because of it.
Leah bringing this up was just to embarrass her publicly.
Jules already didn’t have a good impression of the Holden family, especially this Leah, and couldn’t help but retort upon hearing her speak like this.
"You don’t need to worry about that, Miss Sutton."
"But why isn’t Lawyer Holden accompanying you, Miss Sutton, you should be careful with your condition, this child was not easy to conceive."
Leah’s face slightly changed, barely keeping her smile: "Justin is busy at work, he’s in the United States."
Jules noticed her sudden unnatural expression and recalled that she seemed to catch sight of Justin Holden’s car yesterday, inwardly sneering, she deliberately said, "Is that so? Then I must have seen wrong. I seemed to have seen Lawyer Holden’s car downtown yesterday. It seems Lawyer Holden is managing both work and family, flying back and forth internationally? Or maybe..."
She elongated her tone, with a bit of mockery, "Is Lawyer Holden deliberately avoiding you, Miss Sutton? It seems the outside rumors don’t come from nowhere, it seems your days in the Holden family aren’t easy, Miss Sutton."
Leah’s face instantly turned pale, her fingers tightly gripping the strap of her handbag, her voice sharp.
"What nonsense are you talking about. You definitely saw wrong, Justin is just in the States."
Noting her purpose was achieved, Jules couldn’t be bothered to tangle with her any longer, grasping Jesse’s hand.
"Oh, maybe my eyes deceived me. Miss Sutton, take your time shopping, we have things to do, we’re leaving first."
Saying that, she no longer looked at Leah’s grim expression, and quickly left with Jesse.
As soon as they exited the mall, Leah immediately took out her phone, fingers trembling as she dialed Zoe Holden’s number, her voice filled with barely restrained sobs and anger.
"Zoe, Justin is not in the United States, he has been in the country, he is avoiding me."
On the other end, Zoe seemed somewhat exasperated, soothing, "Leah, calm down first, stay calm, are you sure about this? Could you have mistaken?"
"There’s no mistake, Jules said it herself just now, she saw Justin’s car yesterday." Leah said excitedly, "Zoe, how could he do this to me, I’m carrying his child in my belly."
Zoe sighed, "Alright, alright, I know. Don’t overthink it, it’s not good for the fetus. I’ll tell Mom about it, see if she can do something to get Justin out. Rest assured, Justin listens to Mom the most."
Hanging up the phone, Leah stood at the mall entrance, watching the throngs of people, feeling the world spinning dizzily.
Justin Holden’s avoidance, the mockery of others, pierced her heart like needles.
And Jules’ words "not having a good life in the Holden family" struck the deepest fear and pain within her.
She must find Justin Holden as soon as possible, she must stabilize her position in the Holden family.
Otherwise, she and the unborn child, already unhealthy, would have nothing.
The plane arrived at New York Kennedy Airport.
Justin Holden turned on his phone, and as soon as it connected to the network, a video call request popped up, it was his mother.
Justin Holden frowned slightly, adjusted his expression, and answered the call.
The face of Mrs. Holden appeared on the screen set against the lavishly decorated Holden family living room.
"Justin, where are you right now?"
Mrs. Holden’s tone carried a hint of probing.
Justin didn’t speak, he simply turned the phone’s camera towards the bustling street full of English signs outside the airport in New York.
Mrs. Holden on the other end paused, looking carefully at the background, it was indeed the scenery of abroad.
The suspicion dissipated somewhat from her face, her tone softening, "Oh, in the States, alright then, go about your work, take care of yourself."
Having said that, she hung up the phone hastily.
In the old Holden residence living room, Mrs. Holden put down the phone, her face showing obvious displeasure, she looked at Leah who was sitting nearby nervously.
"You heard it too, saw it too? Justin is indeed in the United States, don’t get paranoid over just a little wind or grass."
Leah opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but looking at Mrs. Holden’s displeased face, she swallowed her words, lowering her head in grievance.
Zoe quickly smoothed things over, gently stroking Leah’s back.
"Mom, don’t be upset, it’s just that Leah is pregnant and her emotions fluctuate easily, worried about Justin."
"Now that we are sure little brother is safe and working well in the States, we can be at ease."
"Leah, you should relax too, take care of yourself and the pregnancy, don’t overthink."
