Glamour and Sass: A Rejected Bride's Revenge-Chapter 48: Mary Mitchell
Chapter 48: Mary Mitchell
Under everyone’s watchful eyes, Alex took only twenty seconds to solve the Rubik’s Cube in his hand.
Cecilia looked at Elena, clearly questioning her about the two strangers.
Elena put down her bowl and chopsticks, quickly walking over to Cecilia so she could introduce the woman and the child.
"This is Mary Mitchell, your granduncle’s niece. Over the years, since your granduncle and I did not have any children, Mary has been taking care of us. You can call her Aunt Mary. And this is Aunt Mary’s child, Alice."
Cecilia nodded to show her understanding.
On the day she reunited with Elena, she took the initiative to learn a bit about the Mitchell family.
The couple didn’t always have any children; they once had a daughter named Sunny Mitchell, but she tragically passed away at the age of seven. Grief-stricken, they decided not to have any more children.
However, their business grew larger, and some members of the Mitchell family began setting their eyes on their assets.
Initially, the extended family eagerly offered for the couple to adopt their children, but they refused them all.
Then, Mary appeared. She somewhat resembled Sunny, their deceased daughter. Although the couple never formally took her in, they allowed her presence in their lives.
Over the years, Mary became an adult and a mother. Her relationship with Elena and James grew stronger, and she believed it was only natural that she would inherit their assets.
Unexpectedly, a distant granddaughter, Cecilia, appeared suddenly, accompanied by a child too.
This change made her unsettled, and she had to come and see what kind of person this distant granddaughter was.
She planned to intimidate Cecilia with a show of strength, but Alex had easily diffused her efforts.
The kind of mother shapes the kind of child. Thus, Alice naturally got upset after being embarrassed by Alex.
A prideful child like her could never allow another kid to outshine her.
She forcefully snatched the Rubik’s Cube from Alex’s hand, dismissively saying, "Rubik’s Cubes are child’s play; there’s nothing impressive about it."
"If you want to compete, let’s compete with the harp!"
As she spoke, she pointed to a luxurious harp in the living room.
Mary chimed in agreeably.
"Exactly, the harp is a refined instrument only accessible to the upper class. Alice played it since she was three, performed on stage at five, and held her own concert at ten."
Mary’s words were dripping with pride.
"Alice, play your best piece for everyone."
Alice nodded, raising her chin as she walked to the harp in her custom-made princess dress.
The elegant melody of the harp resonated through the living room.
Alex listened intently, shaking his head as the harp played its climax.
It was merely an entry-level performance.
When she finished playing the piece, Mary led the applause while Elena and James looked at Alice affectionately.
Cecilia naturally recognized the level of Alice’s performance, but everyone was partial to their children. She saw no need to comment further.
Moreover, it was Elena’s place, and she didn’t want to make things awkward for her.
However, Mary remained relentless and wouldn’t let her go easy.
"Did you see that? I bet you’ve never even seen a harp before, have you?" she said arrogantly, pointing at Alex.
Cecilia frowned, and Elena promptly tried to ease the situation.
"Emma is still young; there’s plenty of time to nurture her talents. Let’s get seated and have dinner now," she suggested.
Alice ignored Elena’s attempt to mediate the situation and returned to Mary’s side, smugly gazing at Alex. She was obviously a spoiled child.
"You clearly can’t play. You’re just a country bumpkin."
Alex, who hadn’t spoken until now, replied calmly.
"It’s just a harp. I can play it too."
With that, he approached the harp.
Everyone was somewhat surprised, especially Cecilia.
Though Emma had a talent for music, she had always preferred painting. In respect to her wishes, Cecilia had never forced her to learn any instruments.
Even when Adrian insisted on taking her as a disciple, she hadn’t pressured Emma into learning.
So when did she pick up the harp?
Alex approached the harp and sat down, but he was sitting a bit awkwardly due to his small stature compared to the harp’s large size.
Mary, seeing his posture, assumed Alex was simply pretending to know and mocked him.
"Even if some ordinary families have seen harps and can play, that’s far from playing well. I suggest you just admit defeat before you damage the harp and end up with a bill you can’t afford..."
But before she could finish, Alex’s fingers touched the strings, and the first note rang out.
