Chapter 107: Piles

A few more mutants charged ahead...

Their bulging muscles could be seen swaying as if they were so excited to see humans.

Up until now, Kai had no clue why these creatures were being so aggressive toward them or if they actually planned to just kill or eat them.

But their purpose wasn’t important to Kai and everyone else.

Atom’s two devastating shots had already thinned the swarm, and they should be able to win this...

Kai didn’t hesitate. He raised both revolvers, one in each hand, and advanced.

Well, he didn’t have an aim similar to Ralph’s, so he had to compensate by getting closer!

His arms moved, and each squeeze of the trigger dropped another mutant.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

A skull shattered, a chest burst open, and another collapsed with a bullet through its throat.

The revolvers fired steadily...

Meanwhile, Russell, Gabby, and Dylan had no time to reload!

Their revolvers were empty, and fumbling with ammunition would only get them killed. Instead, they drew their hatchets and gripped them tightly as the mutants closed the distance.

"Stay close!" Russell shouted, swinging his weapon into the nearest attacker.

Thud!

The hatchet bit deep into the mutant’s shoulder, forcing it back with a shriek!

Though these creatures are crazy and wouldn’t stop attacking them, they still had an instinct to back off a little after getting injured.

However, that was only for a brief moment, as it seemed that they would always forget that they were harmed, and they would just charge forward again!

They were truly close to a Zombie to a certain point.

"Aacck! This is annoying!

Gabby ducked to avoid the pouncing mutant... Then, she countered with her hatchet flashing upward to split a mutant’s jaw.

Blood sprayed as she turned away, narrowly avoiding another claw swipe.

Dylan followed suit, hacking into a mutant’s ribs...

"I don’t taste good! Stay away from me!" He shouted.

This time, Kai also emptied the last rounds from his revolvers. All of his shots were lethal.

The final mutant he hit dropped with a hole through its chest. Unlike the Zombies, these guys could be killed by shattering their hearts or cutting their limbs, or if they lose enough blood.

Soon, Kai holstered his weapons.

"Time for steel," he muttered.

Kai drew a combat knife in one hand and a heavy axe in the other. They were both from his Enhanced Weapon Gift Pack.

At this point, only seven mutants were left!

The next mutant charged at him, but Kai just stepped aside before, driving the knife into its throat. He ripped it free in one move before spinning to bring the axe down on another attacker. The blade cleaved through bone, splitting the mutant’s skull in half!

’Whoa... I just did that.’

Even Kai himself was shocked by the move he made. His Keen Sense allowed him to easily understand his surroundings, and it naturally helped him in his battle!

Since he was now level 16, his speed and strength seemed to have really helped. Of course, he wasn’t feeling any guilt about eliminating these enemies since, in his mind, they weren’t humans at all. They were just creatures, perhaps zombies that needed to be killed!

Russell then fought beside him, his hatchet striking again and again. He wasn’t as fast as Kai, but his blows were solid, keeping the mutants from overwhelming him...

Gabby, on the other hand, wasn’t that strong. However, with the sharp hatchet, she was carving shallow but effective wounds. She may fail cutting off limbs or killing the mutants, but injuring them and slowing them down could help his friends!

Dylan indeed stepped in and struck their limbs and torsos, forcing the mutants back or killing them off if he got lucky!

Together, the four survivors formed a solid line!

"Just five more!"

Kai’s knife flashed in quick thrusts while his axe smashed through skulls and spines.

Russell’s steady swings kept their flank secure while Gabby’s speed helped them slow down the others.

"Haha! This is so easy with you here, Leader!" Dylan shouted as he cleaved another mutant!

After a few more moments, the last mutant charged at Kai.

Then, he met it head-on with his knife, plunging into its chest while the axe swung upward, splitting its skull.

He really likes this move now, as he repeated it a few times during the battle.

"Finally... We’re done here."

The creature collapsed before it started twitching once before lying still.

It was at this point that Kai finally looked at the gathered notifications at the corner of his eyes.

[ You have leveled up! ]

[ +250 Experience Points ]

[ +250 Experience Points ]

These messages repeated a few dozen times, and as expected, he finally leveled up and it happened mid-battle!

It was no wonder he felt his Spirit Energy and Health in full again!

Kai knew that this quick level up was also thanks to the War Tyrant that gave him huge Experience Points a while ago!

However, Kai didn’t check the complete level-up notification yet...

His attention turned to Atom.

Atom was standing several meters away, its body surrounded by a small mountain of corpses.

Apparently, while Kai and the others had been locked in their desperate melee, Atom had been fighting on its own flank, eliminating another wave of mutants that had arrived unnoticed!

Russell was shocked after realizing what had just happened. "Wait... don’t tell me it handled all of those by itself? Atom! You’re so cool!"

Gabby let out a short laugh, shaking her head. "We were struggling like crazy, and Atom was just... stacking bodies. What a great Sentinel you are. It’s a good thing you’re an ally."

Dylan also chuckled while wiping sweat from his brow. He really thought he would die today.

"Thank you, Atom. I know you can’t speak, but I’m sure you can hear me."

Kai allowed himself a faint smile before he turned to the three...

"So... What really happened here? Where is the Gene Trader?"
