Chapter 116: Consent

The night before, Jonas and the rest of the Security Division received instructions from Wallace to patrol the surroundings early.

Apparently, the two Assault Teams would be searching for the Gene Trader that was supposedly just nearby.

"We have to gather early to help search the area?" Jonas asked Wallace.

"Not really... It’s the job of the Assault Teams. We’ll just stay in the vicinity of the shelter. Kai mentioned that there might be more mutants appearing. We need to be ready." Wallace answered.

"I see... I’ll wake up early then!" Jonas said, eager to do something for the shelter.

When he arrived here, he was with Terrence and Aurora from Haven-15.

Now, while Terrence was working hard at Assault Team B and Aurora was managing the garden because of her Talent, he was only doing some menial task like patrolling the wall.

’No... I can’t be negative... I’m sure that my time will come someday.’ Jonas reminded himself.

In any case, he checked his current status.

[ Name: Jonas ]

[ Title: Survivor ]

[ Level: 6 ]

[ Health: 350 / 350 ]

[ Spirit: 105 / 105 ]

[ Physique Rating: D- ]

[ Talent: Iron Stomach (Rare) ]

[ Active Skills: None ]

[ Passive Skills: Toxin Resistance Lv0 ]

[ Skill Points: 2 ]

His rare talent, Iron Stomach, defined him. It allowed him to eat almost anything without falling sick... Even if it was spoiled food, strange roots, or even meat that others wouldn’t dare touch.

Thanks to that, Jonas never worried about meals. While others fretted over rations, he could survive on scraps if needed.

It was a strange blessing, but in this world, it gave him a little advantage...

’I really wanted some kind of offensive Gene Skill. I hope they find the Gene Trader soon.’ Jonas thought as he had already learned from Kai that the Trader had Gene Skill Crystals.

The one with the guaranteed Passive Skill was only worth 2 Survivor Medals. However, if he wanted a chance of getting an Active Skill, he’d have to purchase the version worth 3 Survivor Medals.

That morning, Jonas woke up early to conduct his patrol...

At this time, he noticed that Amer was already heading toward the kitchen.

Jonas respected Amer’s diligence. The young man was always eager to contribute.

In any case, as part of the Security Division, Jonas was a wall defender. His daily life revolved around patrols, keeping watch for mutants or stray Sentinels, and helping reinforce the shelter’s defenses.

Sometimes, when things were quiet, he would even split wood for fuel using his hatchet...

It wasn’t glamorous, but it kept the fires burning and the shelter warm...

Soon, after a round of patrol, he finally saw the two Assault Teams being briefed by Kai. They were about to go outside to find the Gene Trader.

"Good luck, guys..." He muttered.

***

Three hours had passed since Kai sent out the Assault Teams.

Jonas had been waiting for any signs of mutants, but it seemed that they were safe today.

Indeed, the patrol had been uneventful... no mutants, no Sentinels, not even the faintest sound beyond the wind.

’Still nothing...’ he thought while scanning the horizon.

’If they haven’t returned by now, then they must have failed to find the Gene Trader nearby. Or maybe there’s none in the first place.’

The silence weighed on him. Jonas had hoped today would bring something new, something that might change his role in the shelter. But with no news, it felt like another wasted morning.

Suddenly, the sound of hurried footsteps broke the dullness.

A group of survivors rushed back through the gates, their faces pale...

"Where’s Kai?!" one of them shouted. "We need Kai right now!"

Jonas straightened as he heard. It must be really important.

"What happened?" Jonas asked.

"Ah... You see. Our mission was a success."

Apparently, they had found the Gene Trader. The man was hidden deep within the massive sewer system beneath the ruins. It was no wonder the Assault Teams had struggled...

The Trader had concealed himself so well that no one had thought to look underground.

Jonas felt so excited.

’The Gene Trader is here...’

But before the group could report further, the ground trembled beneath Jonas’s boots.

Thud... Thud...

Earthquake? Jonas thought, but the vibration was too deliberate. This wasn’t natural.

Then, he soon realized what was going on!

From beyond the perimeter, a mechanical entity emerges... It was a towering six meters tall! It may not be equipped with a sword or spear, or even a flamethrower, but it had clawed hands.

Jonas knew that this wouldn’t be easy... He had seen other Field Tyrants before, but this was different. This seemed more terrifying!

The ground shook violently as the six‑meter Tyrant Unit advanced...

Jonas gritted his teeth and ordered everyone to raise their weapons, but he knew this wasn’t a fight the Security Division could handle alone. The sheer size of the machine dwarfed the walls.

Then, a voice cut through the chaos.

"Clear his path!" Kai shouted as he gestured to Jonas’s group to move out of the way...

Then, after making a path, the Sentinel strode out from the gates.

In any case, Atom had a blade strapped across its back and a rifle already raised. He was ready!

Soon, the Field Tyrant charged forward!

Thud! Thud! Thud!

At this time, Jonas heard Kai instructing the Sentinel from a distance!

"Stop it from advancing! Protect the shelter!"

Atom heard this, and soon, its rifle spat a slug the size of a brick, smashing into the machine’s chest!

Bang!

The impact staggered the giant, and sparks burst from its armor. Another slug followed, tearing into its shoulder and forcing it back!

Kai was actually so calm in front of such monstrosity, and Jonas felt impressed!

Then, as the enemy kept coming, Jonas saw Atom drop the gun and drew the blade!

Apparently, the large Tyrant was strong enough to withstand Atom’s rifle shots!

Even Kai was amazed as he looked at the discarded rifle...

Its ammunition was just a slab of steel, but it had destroyed the previous Tyrants! It meant that this version of Tyrant was even stronger!

’I guess you’ll drop a decent loot later, right?’ Kai thought as he saw Atom.
