Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Alive And Well

Meanwhile, back in the college.

Another debate broke out between two groups. One comprising the chosen, and the powerless. It seemed that being chosen not only granted humans amazing powers, but it also made them have quite an appetite.

The food in the pantry should have lasted them a couple of weeks or maybe even a month, with rationing. However, they were already running low on most ready-to-eat foods.

"We risk our lives to keep you useless fucks safe," a chosen argued. "We deserve more food, just for that!"

A few people nodded their heads, but the other weren’t so pleased with their entitlement.

"Oh yeah? Don’t pretend to be so high and mighty. You’ve been using us a human shields all along! You say you’re risking your lives, when in reality you all are cowards who only think about themselves!"

This time, more voices agreed with the speaker’s emotions. There were more unawakened people than the chosen, so obviously their voice would be louder.

However, having more people on their side meant nothing. The world had changed, and the strong ruled over the weak. That was all there was to it.

The ordinary human had been grateful for the chosen at first. But when they began treating others like slaves, that’s when the problem arose.

Alaric tried to keep everything under control, but failed. It seemed all the rest he had in his students’ hearts was long gone.

Moreover, with the zombies on the campus gone, they didn’t have a common enemy to focus on. Hence, everyone began infighting over their perceived injustice.

"Instead of fighting, we should look for resources ourselves."

Everyone turned to see Neha talking. Min was by her side, but he looked strangely... docile. Just the night before, he had been agitated with her, but all of it was gone now.

It wasn’t just him. Even Neha seemed different. She appeared bolder, in more ways than one. While the others were too busy to notice the changes, Alaric knew something had happened last night.

"What do you mean?" he asked her. "You’re not suggesting we leave the safety of this place, are you?"

"That’s exactly what I’m saying, professor," Neha said with a smile. "It’s clear we can’t please everyone, so instead of fighting, why don’t we scavenge for resources ourselves or go someplace else entirely?"

Alaric could see something was going on in Neha’s head, but Min was quick to continue. He tossed a city map before them. A few places were already marked with a red circle.

"These are the five locations I assume will give us plenty of food and shelter," Anna continued, pointing at each location.

There was one site that immediately caught everyone’s attention.

The naval base.

In their panicked state, they had all forgotten about the Navy and the Marine Corps. But it came as an even bigger surprise that neither the navy nor any other armed force was seen even once after the outbreak.

In movies, they were all over the place, helping civilians, but not this time.

They wanted to be rescued, but were overlooking one minor detail.

The solar flare had fried electronics all over the globe. It was unlikely that even military grade vehicles were working anymore.

However, given the circumstances, it was perhaps the safest place to be.

At least they had proper security and weapons to deal with zombies, and also decent food reserves... probably.

The other places included the zoo, the airport, and a couple of malls. Out of all the options, the naval base was the best choice... if not for the distance.

It would take at least six hours of continuous walking to reach the base from the college. Six hours in a city full of zombies.

While the chosen could deal with the zombies, there was no guarantee they wouldn’t cross paths with the headless creatures.

Suddenly, eating less food didn’t seem like a bad choice. At least they wouldn’t have to risk their lives.

However, it was too late to back down now.

The chosen, however, had no interest in staying back.

The food there would run out sooner rather than later. It was better to pack what they could and leave for the base. Besides, the military would want superhumans with them.

The factions began fighting once again.

Only this time, the unawakened wanted the chosen to stay with them.

But it was too late.

Not a single chosen one wanted to stay back. That’s when Neha threw a buoy to the drowning people.

"You can join us," she said, "but there’ll be no guarantee how many of us will survive the journey." freewebnoveℓ.com

The unawakened looked at one another. They didn’t want to leave, but knew they wouldn’t last on the campus without the chosen. They were being forced into submission... and they agreed.

Once again, to be used as meat shields for the chosen in hopes of survival.

Meanwhile, back at the zoo.

Blaze stood before the reptile house. Breaker and Raven stood in front, while four blob-like undead stood behind. Blaze remained in the center with Crawler and Fester.

It’s not the best formation, but it’ll do for now.

Blaze barely took a step when something burst through the roof. An enormous shadow was cast over them as something came crashing down on them.

Everyone, get back!

A cloud of dust and debris was shot into the sky, covering everything in smoke. Blaze looked at his horde counter, and everyone was alive. The blobs were slow, but being the farthest saved them. Breaker was pushed aside by Raven, and Crawler had already jumped away.

Blaze let out an undead’s version of a sigh before turning towards the source of all the troubles. But nothing could have prepared him for what he saw.

What the hell is that?

He expected to face an undead creature. Instead, he saw a human-size frog staring back at him. It wasn’t the creature’s size that surprised him... but the fact that it was... alive!
