Chapter 36: Chapter 36: A Dead Man’s Smile

Neither of the two could believe their eyes.

Blaze was standing right before them.

No, it isn’t him.

John refused to believe it. The pale skin, the smell of rot, and the stiff expression... all of it was a dead giveaway.

It was a zombie, not Blaze.

Yet, the zombie almost looked human. Its behavior and demeanor were like a human’s.

"Neha said he died on the campus! Why is he here!?" Jade said, clutching her head in fear.

John didn’t know either, but he wasn’t worried about that.

Strange zombies surrounded them. Each looked more terrifying than the last. Yet what confused him was that none of them were attacking them.

It can’t be...

John turned to Blaze and saw a crooked smile on his face. The zombies were under Blaze’s command!

He didn’t know how, but that was the only reason they weren’t attacking them.

"H-He’s smiling!?" Jade exclaimed.

How was a zombie smiling? The dead can’t smile, but Blaze was dead! Everything was so confusing, it felt like her head would explode at any moment.

"Look man, it’s me, John. You remember me, right?"

John didn’t know how much intelligence the undead have, but it was worth a try. Perhaps Blaze remembered them and would let them leave. It was a long shot, but he had to take it.

"We didn’t know you’d be here, or that you became a zombie," John said, trying to convince the dead. "We’ll leave, and you’ll never see us again. I won’t tell anyone about you either. Just—"

Blaze’s smile widened as he stood there, his arms crossed.

Never thought I’d see familiar faces so soon.

It would be a lie to say Blaze hadn’t thought about it. The moment he came across the people from his past. Yet, he never thought about what he’d do with them.

He could go the usual route. Kill them and then assimilate them into the horde. Or he could keep them alive and torture them.

While the latter would cure him of his boredom, it served no rational purpose. Besides, keeping live humans among a bunch of undead wasn’t a good idea.

Then again, it would be wrong to kill them, especially since they traveled all the way here.

While he was lost in thought, Jade tried the only thing she knew.

Seduction.

Yes. She was just that stupid.

The only thing she knew was to play with feelings. The fact that Blaze was smiling confirmed in her head that he was in control of his body... somewhat.

She was confident she could seduce her way out of the mess. If not, she’d throw John under the bus and make a run for it.

With a plan in place, Jade stepped forward, trying her best to sound sweet and seductive.

"I’m so glad to see you again, Blaze. You have no idea how much the thought of your death hurt me."

Blaze turned towards her, wondering what she was on about. For the sake of entertainment, he let her be.

"Just let me go and I’ll make sure that lying bitch pays the price for it," she continued, careful not to get too close.

Blaze let her talk, thinking she would entertain him. Yet the only thing she did was to bore him. He brought a finger to his lips, gesturing for Jade to shut up before pointing towards the gate.

"You... will let me leave?" she asked.

Blaze nodded.

"Thank you!"

Elated, Jade didn’t bother with anything else. As long as she lived, she’d think of another way to awaken. Staying alive was more important.

She ran towards the exit, forgetting all about John. He was taken aback by her selfishness, but then Blaze pointed at his eyes before pointing them towards Jade.

"You... want me to watch?" John asked.

No, I want to you devour her, stupid bitch.

Jade was about to exit the zoo when suddenly she was tackled to the ground. Several zombies were upon her, dragging her back inside.

"NO! JOHN! HELP ME!"

She yelled as she clawed her way to the exit. But an awakened human like her stood no chance against the zombies. They didn’t bite her; they didn’t hurt her. The zombies only pinned her to the ground, awaiting further instructions.

John realized what was going on.

"You... it was all your plan!" He shouted.

He should have known. The lack of corpses and undead, the false information about a boss guarding the portal that the system gave him. Blaze eliminated all the obstacles for him.

Most likely, the undead couldn’t enter the portal, so Blaze hatched the plan to steal the reward from whoever did.

He never intended to let Jade go, either.

It was all his plan.

Suddenly, Blaze extended his arm towards John. He didn’t say anything; he didn’t need to.

John knew Blaze wanted the seed. He clenched his fists in frustration. What was supposed to be his ticket to godhood had turned into a one-way road to hell.

He glared at Blaze with murderous intent, but he was too powerless to act on it. He wasn’t afraid of him, but of the undead that surrounded him.

John could take on Blaze, but those creatures would tear him in half. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

Just then, an idea flashed through his mind.

Blaze controlled the undead. As long as he took Blaze hostage, he could make an escape. As for Jade, well, fuck her. She didn’t care about him while running away, so why should he care about her?

Calm down, John. You can’t let him know.

John no longer thought of Blaze as another dumb zombie. If anything, he had gotten smarter after his death.

With a sigh, John reached into his pocket, bringing the emerald seed out. Blaze stepped forward to take it, only for John to retract it.

Blaze looked at him, only to see John staring back at him with pleading eyes.

"Promise you’ll let me leave afterwards..." he said.

Blaze nodded. Honestly, he was going to let one of them leave. So that they’d bring stronger individuals to him.

He thought since John had a crush on Jade, he’d sacrifice himself for her. But it seemed chivalry was dead in the new world.

It’s not like it matters who left. They’ll die soon enough.

John offered him the seed again. This time, their hands met and immediately John acted on it. He grabbed Blaze’s wrist before pulling him into a headlock.

"Tell your zombies to leave or else I’ll snap your neck in half!" he yelled.

Jade saw it from the corner of her eyes and began yelling at him.

"What are you doing, you moron? Do you want me to die?"

"Shut up!" John yelled back. "As if you cared about me. I’m doing this for myself, no one else! And you, I said, make your zombies leave—Argh!"

John screamed in agony as his severed limb hit the ground. He stumbled backward in pain, only to see Blaze’s claws covered in his blood.

You wanted to take me hostage?

Blaze thought, licking his claws clean while the latter clutched his arm, trying to stop the blood.

How foolish can you be?

He was disappointed. He had hoped the encounter would put him at his wits’ end. It seemed he expected too much from a dimwit.

John couldn’t entertain him.

Which meant he didn’t deserve to live.

Claws popped out of Blaze’s feet as he roundhouse kicked John, sending his head flying to Jade.

Throw her out with the head.

He instructed the horde.

He hoped the severed head would serve as a message and would bring stronger individuals to his doorstep. That way, he could put his lair defenses to actual use.

Either way, he was more interested in the emerald thing in his hand.
