Grand Return System-Chapter 101: The Edge of the Law
The Edge of the Law
Even the air seemed to pause.
Even silence stayed away. Every breath held still.
Now quiet too, the wind drifted around the training hall in gentle loops - its earlier fury gone, hushed by some presence without shape or sound. This stillness felt deliberate, like the air waited along with everything else.
Right there in the middle was Kevin.
A heavy pull grew above the Amethyst Summit Division, air twisting tighter each moment. Once just a slow spin, it now coiled down on itself, clouds pressing together as if pulled by hunger. The light in the hall sank low - then snapped back without rhythm, jagged bursts stretching strange silhouettes along the floor. Elders stood still beneath it, faces half-lit, caught in silence.
No one moved.
It stayed untouched because fear held everyone back.
His breath came in jagged bursts, each one pulling harder than the last. A storm raged behind his eyes, ripping through old paths and carving new ones all at once. Ideas bent like paper caught in wind - sharp for a second, then lost under waves of raw force.
Then—
The spiral above snapped tighter.
For a heartbeat, everything seemed to pause.
And then it plunged.
The entire vortex collapsed downward, like an ocean forced into a single point, crashing straight toward Kevin’s body.
"It’s starting!"
Mike’s voice cut through the silence, low but sharp.
His fingers tightened within the folds of his sleeves, the fabric creasing under the pressure. Outwardly, he stood tall—every bit the composed Headmaster. But his eyes betrayed him. There was something there. Something uneasy. Something... uncertain.
He had seen breakthroughs before.
Dozens. Hundreds, even.
But this—
"This isn’t right..." one of the elders muttered under his breath, barely daring to speak.
Mike didn’t respond. His gaze never left Kevin.
Because he knew.
This was different.
This wasn’t a steady rise, carefully guided by discipline and control.
This was violent.
Uncontrolled.
Complete.
It made his chest tighten slightly as a thought crept in, uninvited—
What kind of realm will he reach... under this kind of blessing?
Beneath the falling storm, color drained from Kevin’s face. Drops of sweat collected at his temples, trailing downward like slow rivers. Tightness pulled his eyebrows close, rigid, as though shouldering a weight too great to name.
True enough, that’s how it felt to him.
Fierce energy surged through his body, rough and unyielding.
It didn’t nurture.
It demanded.
A sudden wave hit hard, shaking his core without warning. Into each part it rushed, unstoppable. Deeper it pushed, even while he stood still.
A shiver slipped across his skin.
Then another.
Under everyone’s watchful eyes, his cultivation began to rise.
Not slowly.
Not carefully.
But like a dam breaking apart under unbearable pressure.
Five stars of the Astral Realm.
A surge of energy rippled outward, stirring robes and hair alike.
"Did you feel that?" someone whispered, voice tight with disbelief.
Six stars.
Kevin’s shoulders tensed, his fingers curling slightly against the ground as if anchoring himself.
Seven stars.
The air grew heavier, pressing down on everyone present.
Eight stars.
A low hum filled the hall, vibrating through bone and breath alike.
Nine stars...
"Gasp... he’s at nine stars!"
A wave of cold air swept through the crowd as dozens inhaled sharply.
One nourishment.
One enlightenment.
And he had leapt from five to nine stars in a single breath.
Ten years of bitter cultivation — reduced to dust.
It was as if he had awakened rich overnight, handed the treasury of heaven without warning.
Yet Leon did not look surprised.
He stood quietly, midnight robes embroidered with thin amethyst threads fluttering gently around him. His long black hair shifted in the wind, purple eyes steady — observant.
Nine stars was not the end.
It was the wall.
"Nine stars is already the limit," one elder murmured softly. "If he wishes to take another step... to rush into the GrandMaster Realm in one go, he must first comprehend the law of domain."
"Yes... without grasping the Law, he cannot cross that threshold."
"Now it depends on whether he can seize it before the Mana Blessings fade..."
Hope.
Fear.
Anticipation.
The first student of Celestis Academy to break into the GrandMaster Realm.
And that person... was standing right before them.
After stabilizing at nine stars of the Astral Realm, Kevin’s aura did not erupt again.
Instead, it quieted.
Deepened.
His breathing slowed. His posture straightened unconsciously. The raging Mana began to rotate more slowly around him, compressing toward his spiritual core.
He was tempering his heart.
Tempering his Principal.
Comprehending Law.
No one dared to speak.
Even Shera, who normally would scoff or comment, remained still. His jaw was tight, eyes fixed forward.
The wind brushed against Selena’s silver-white hair. Rias instinctively clasped her hands together, lips slightly parted.
Don’t fail...
Kevin’s fingers trembled faintly.
The Mana Blessings were still pouring in — but time was thinning.
And then—
Leon moved.
He did not rush.
He did not command attention.
He simply stepped forward.
Then slowly floated to Kevin’s side, robes lifting lightly as though the air itself supported him.
He looked down at the young man seated beneath the collapsing heavens.
And in a calm, unhurried voice, he spoke.
"All things under heaven sprang from It as existing... that existence sprang from It as non-existent..."
His voice was not loud.
Yet it cut through the storm.
Like a bell echoing across a mountain valley.
The vortex trembled.
Kevin’s breathing stilled.
The world... seemed to listen.
