Grand Voyage : Surviving on a Ghost Ship-Chapter 124 - Bananas and monkeys
It was an irregularly shaped, roughly circular island.
Before arriving, Yang Yi had already studied the nautical charts and knew the island’s general shape and size.
At first, he was a little disappointed.
It was quite small, the smallest he had encountered so far.
But as he got closer, his opinion changed.
Climbing up to the lookout post, he used binoculars to observe the island and discovered that it was densely covered with trees.
Aside from the sparse coastal area, the island's interior was essentially a small forest. Though its total area wasn’t large, the trees were packed closely together — at a rough estimate, there were at least 3,000 of them.
Among them, certain trees caught Yang Yi’s attention.
"Banana?" He murmured in surprise. (1)
A portion of the trees, about one-tenth, had broad leaves shaped like large fans.
However, they were quite different from the banana trees he remembered. Their veins were red, like blood vessels, which stood out starkly against the green leaves.
Moreover, they bore bananas that hung upside down from the branches.
Clusters of red bananas resembled a blazing fire.
Yang Yi withdrew his gaze.
From a distance of ten nautical miles, he hadn’t spotted any suspicious signs on the island.
But the red bananas had left a strong impression on him.
They were likely a special kind of fruit, similar to the Vitality Coconut. He’d find out once he set foot on the island.
Descending to the deck, Yang Yi manoeuvred the Nightmare Star towards it at full speed.
Upon arrival, he followed standard protocol, sailing around the island first to check for any potential dangers, using his Three-Eye ability to observe.

He stayed about 100 metres from the shore.
After circling the island, he finally made a discovery.
Although the forest was dense, his Three-Eye vision allowed him to see inside, where he noticed traces of animal droppings on the ground.
And he soon found the source.
It was a species of monkey with thick, bushy tails resembling fox tails.
Switching to binoculars for a clearer look, Yang Yi saw that the monkeys had red fur with yellowish roots.
He wasn’t sure how many there were, but he could already see close to ten of them.
Yang Yi adjusted the Nightmare Star, positioning the ship’s broadside towards the shore and aiming one of its cannons at a monkey.
The Waterlogged Cannon had a range of 350 metres, though its accuracy wasn’t great.
Fortunately, its calibre was large enough that even a grazing shot could be fatal.
Two Waterlogged Cannons fired almost simultaneously, targeting a monkey on the island.
One shell veered off course, but the other flew true, breaking several branches before striking one of the monkeys directly, blasting it into pieces on the spot.
"Seems to be a normal animal," Yang Yi concluded.
Startled, the remaining monkeys immediately bolted deeper into the forest.
Yang Yi steered the Nightmare Star towards the shore, preparing to disembark.
By then, he was used to gauging an island’s dangers using Waterlogged Cannons.
If a creature could dodge the cannonfire or survive a direct hit, it was a formidable enemy.
If it died instantly, it was nothing to worry about — not a match for him at all.
He checked his gear.
For clothing, he changed into his Captain’s Coat.
For weapons, he carried the Roaring Flintlock, Sea Serpent’s Fang, and Shattered Iron Greatsword.
Since his Worm Ring had an expanded capacity, he stored all his weapons and potions inside for easy access.
"There are some red-furred monkeys on the island, but they’re not strong. I’m going ashore to take a look."
"Keep an eye on the Nightmare Star. I’ll deploy the Twilight Veil."
Yang Yi sent a private message to Suna.
"Got it!"
Suna replied almost immediately.
She was inside the Witch’s Laboratory, dissecting and studying the corpses of Ice Nest Cultists, along with fragments from the Crystal Giant.
These remains had once belonged to an Elder of the Ice Nest, who had discarded his mortal flesh to become the Crystal Giant — essentially, a separate entity.
She discovered that the cultists had almost no blood inside them.
Though they still had blood vessels, what flowed within wasn’t blood at all. There were no blood cells, nothing remotely similar to human physiology.
Suna named this substance "Frozen Blood”.
In low-temperature conditions, it behaved like a semi-coagulated soft gel, barely flowing but still functioning similarly to blood, albeit with extremely low transport efficiency.
However, when the temperature rose, it lost its ability to transport nutrients, causing the cultists to suffocate and die.
In extreme cold, their life activities were suppressed to an extreme degree, they barely needed to eat, sleep, or even think...
As she dissected the bodies, Suna recorded her findings.
"Ice Nest cultists have likely undergone blood replacement surgery and reshaped their hematopoietic function to adapt to low-temperature environments..."
The corpse inside the Crystal Giant was possibly the result of prolonged exposure to extreme cold or perhaps an effect of Frozen Blood. Its internal tissues had crystallised, more ice than flesh at that point.
These crystals were actually specialised Frozen Blood. Over time, much like the aging process of wine, they underwent a transformation, oozing from the body to form the Crystal Giant...
Through dissection, Suna further analysed the properties of these crystals.
She planned to mix Frozen Blood, melted crystals, and Charred Liquor to create various weapons and armuor...
Meanwhile, Yang Yi had already landed on the island and was working to eliminate potential threats.
He headed towards the area where he had previously spotted the monkeys, advancing deeper until he arrived at a fallen banana tree.
It was where he had spotted a monkey tugging at the red bananas, before he blasted it into pieces.
As he picked up a chunk of the monkey’s remains, he immediately obtained its information:
【Name: Juvenile Fire Macaque】
【Description: A species of monkey capable of breathing fire. Adult individuals can unleash scorching flame attacks. Their brightly colored fur gives them high ornamental value. Their meat is edible, though quite spicy. They have a preference for fruit, especially Fire Bananas. 】
Yang Yi had no fear of these fire-breathing monkeys. Instead, he became more intrigued by the Fire Bananas.
He picked up a bloodstained one nearby.
【Name: Fire Banana】
【Description: A special type of banana with an intensely spicy taste. Eating it causes profuse sweating, raises body temperature, and can even create the sensation of being on fire. 】
Reading this, Yang Yi had a sense of déjà vu. Wasn't it just like Charred Liquor?
Peeling the Fire Banana, he was immediately hit by a familiar aroma.
The burnt scent of Charred Liquor, mixed with a rich fruity fragrance.
Could Charred Liquor be brewed from Fire Bananas? His eyes lit up. Without hesitation, he took a bite.
The spicy fruit flesh was like chewing on a Ghost Pepper, and as he swallowed, the searing heat spread through his entire body.
The sensation was exactly like drinking Charred Liquor, just slightly weaker!
At that point, Yang Yi was almost certain, Fire Bananas were the key ingredient in Charred Liquor!
If that was the case, there could be a recipe for Charred Liquor hidden somewhere on this island!
Just as he was eating, a group of Fire Macaques suddenly rushed towards him.
The three leading monkeys were massive, comparable in size to gorillas.
However, to Yang Yi's current self, the creatures were laughably weak.
Raising his Roaring Flintlock, he aimed at the charging horde.
And switched to scattershot mode.
