Grinding EXP From Fireball Skill-Chapter 68: Peerless Infiltration! Assassin-Style Mage
As Li Wei looked at the entry for the Magic Net Codex, another thought came to mind.
He had been worried that his Fireball Skill would be exposed, which would lead to trouble.
Having the Magic Net Codex would solve this problem entirely.
If anyone asked, he could just say he learned it from the Magic Net.
He wouldn’t have to let Mage Allen take the blame anymore.
It would be much safer that way.
That way, at least for the time being, he wouldn’t have to worry about exposing his magic.
’Once I’m stronger, who will dare question where I learned my magic?’
But for now, his wings had yet to fledge, so he still needed to be cautious.
’I have to get the Magic Net Codex!’
Just as Li Wei was leaving the supply depot, he ran into someone he knew on the training grounds.
"Ah! Mage Li Wei, you’re here too?"
Lisa cried out in surprise, her eyes lighting up with delight.
Lanya turned to look, also pleasantly surprised to see Li Wei.
Hearing the shout, Li Wei turned and saw the four members of the Grass Fox Squad standing together.
He saw that Kunan and Dias looked dispirited.
He had been wondering why he hadn’t seen the two of them in the dream last night.
’So that was it. They had been killed by the Tier Two Nightmare long ago.’
Li Wei said, "You all don’t look to be in good shape. You should get some proper rest instead of rushing to take on missions."
Upon hearing his words, Lanya nodded. "Thank you for the reminder, Mage Li Wei. We’ll be careful."
Seeing her response, he didn’t say anything more. He had only reminded them out of courtesy.
’If they didn’t listen, it was none of his business.’
Lisa asked hopefully, "Mage Li Wei, could you do a mission with us?"
Li Wei replied, "Sorry, I already have a partner."
"Oh, I see," Lisa said, disappointed.
Li Wei wasn’t lying. His partner was the Shadow Attendant.
After parting ways with Lanya and her team, Li Wei left Cold Sand City with a Memory Crystal.
The Memory Crystal was a magic item the barracks provided to Li Wei after he accepted the mission.
It could be used to record proof of a mission’s completion.
For example, after destroying an outpost, he could use the Memory Crystal to record the destroyed site and turn in the mission.
Li Wei had accepted three missions: destroy a Beastman squad outpost, clear out roaming Beastman Soldiers, and hunt down Beastman Professionals.
In reality, he had only taken on one official mission.
The other two were public missions, open to everyone.
Once he was out of Cold Sand City and with no one around, Li Wei activated his Invisibility Cloak and vanished into thin air.
"Shadow Attendant, scout the road ahead."
Li Wei said in a low voice.
The Shadow Attendant emerged from the shadows and flowed forward.
Outside the city was a no-man’s-land.
Under the threat of the Beastman Race, no ordinary person dared to leave the city.
Even the merchants who typically traveled between towns chose to play it safe, hiding within the city walls.
Only a few audacious merchants hoping to profit from the war dared to venture outside.
Under the siege of the Beastman Race, Cold Sand City was essentially cut off from all outside trade and supplies.
Only the supply convoys escorted by the Maple City army had a chance of breaking through the encirclement.
Even with military protection, the risk remained immense.
The Beastman Race relied on outposts built around Cold Sand City to lay siege to the humans within.
The Beastman army used the intelligence from these outposts to quickly surround and eliminate any humans who left the city, forming a tight blockade.
Orn wanted to eliminate these outposts to break the Beastman blockade.
These outposts were not large; they didn’t even have any defensive structures.
However, trying to steamroll them with the army proved difficult.
The Beastman Soldiers were extremely crafty. The moment they saw an overwhelming enemy force, they would abandon their outpost and flee.
They would only return to the outpost after the enemy had left.
After this happened time and again, the army found itself powerless against the scattered Beastman outposts.
This type of enemy was actually best dealt with by Professionals.
With the Shadow Attendant acting as his guide, Li Wei soon reached a hillside east of Cold Sand City.
There, he saw a crude Beastman outpost established among a few large boulders.
At the foot of the hill was a human village, though now there were no signs of life.
Some people had fled, others had gone into hiding, all of them terrified of the Beastmen roaming the area.
Li Wei remained invisible, hiding over a hundred meters away from the Beastman outpost.
"Shadow Attendant, scout out the locations and number of Beastmen nearby."
"Yes, Master."
The Shadow Attendant dissolved into a pool of shadow that flowed along the ground, advancing toward the Beastman outpost a hundred-odd meters away.
No one would pay any mind to a moving shadow on the ground.
Li Wei waited quietly for the Shadow Attendant to return.
He peeked out to observe the Beastman outpost; there wasn’t even a single sentry on guard outside.
A Beastman came out and walked behind one of the boulders.
After a moment, he turned and left, leaving a wet streak on the rock.
’Are they really this careless?’
Li Wei thought to himself.
A short while later, the Shadow Attendant returned.
"Eight enemies. Six inside, two outside."
The Shadow Attendant extended its hand, and its arm transformed into a mist that formed a crude map, marking the positions of all eight individuals.
Li Wei understood at a glance.
’If only I had a spell that could share senses. Then I could see everything the Shadow Attendant sees.’
After a moment’s thought, Li Wei had his plan of attack.
’Six in the open, two hidden. I’ll take out the two hidden lookouts first.’
He took another look, only then spotting the Beastman Soldiers hiding prone on the ground.
If the Shadow Attendant hadn’t found the hidden lookouts, he would have certainly been discovered the moment he made a move.
He moved toward one of the hidden lookouts.
"Shadow Tentacles!" 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
A single shadow tentacle shot out from the darkness, coiling around the Beastman Soldier like a giant python.
Just as the Beastman Soldier sensed something was wrong, the shadow tentacle constricted violently.
CRACK!
The Beastman Soldier’s bones shattered, and he died instantly.
Although the Attack Power of Shadow Tentacles was not high for a Tier One Magic, it was more than enough to deal with a Beastman Soldier who hadn’t even reached Tier One.
After killing one lookout, Li Wei quickly approached the second one.
"Shadow Tentacles!"
"Shadow Attendant, possess his body."
The Shadow Attendant slipped into the body of the Beastman Soldier being restrained by the Shadow Tentacles.
The Beastman Soldier tried to struggle and scream, but his mouth was stuffed full by the shadow tentacle, rendering him silent.
"Mmph! Mmph!"
After a moment, the Beastman Soldier stopped struggling and looked in Li Wei’s direction.
"Master."
A smile appeared on Li Wei’s face. "If the Beastmen spot me Casting later, you stall them."
"Yes, Master."
Li Wei estimated the distance. He was within his magic’s attack range.
He began casting the Fireball Skill, gathering power.
While Casting with his full power, he couldn’t maintain the effect of the Invisibility Cloak.
The Fireball in front of him expanded rapidly, causing the surrounding Magic Elements to fluctuate chaotically.
Ordinary people couldn’t perceive the fluctuations of Magic Elements.
However, to be safe, Li Wei still had the Shadow Attendant stand by as support.
Inside the outpost, a Beastman squad leader stood up, feeling vaguely uneasy.
"Go and see what’s happening outside."
Seeing this, the Shadow Attendant controlled the Beastman’s body and walked into the outpost.
Seeing the lookout approach, the Beastman squad leader stopped and asked, "Any activity outside?"
The Shadow Attendant replied in a gruff voice, "Nothing. All is normal."
Hearing this, the squad leader let out a sigh of relief and sat back down.
But a moment later, he shot back to his feet and stared at the Shadow Attendant, feeling that something wasn’t right.
"If everything is normal, why did you come in?"
WHOOSH!
A Fireball nearly a meter in diameter shot toward the outpost.
When the Beastman squad leader saw the Fireball, his eyes widened in disbelief and absolute despair.
’There was a Human Mage Casting right nearby, and no one even noticed?’
BOOM!
