Chapter 73: Chapter 73: Bait

The carriage raced onward, driven wildly by Kunan.

A trail of dust billowed in its wake.

Lanya shouted, "We’ll be safe as soon as we leave the Beastman Race’s blockade zone! Everyone, be careful!"

RUMBLE RUMBLE!

Li Wei gripped the handrail, afraid he’d be thrown from the speeding carriage.

The carriage had no suspension whatsoever. As it careened down the stone-littered road, he was jolted up and down so violently that he nearly flew out several times.

"Shadow Attendant, hold me steady."

The Shadow Attendant grabbed Li Wei, securing him to the carriage.

He breathed a sigh of relief and let go of the handrail he had been gripping with his left hand.

Li Wei turned his head to look inside the carriage, wanting to see if the person within was City Lord Otz.

Seeing that the carriage was still moving at top speed, he didn’t make any sudden moves.

After a while, the carriage slowed down and maintained a steady, fast pace.

The key to maintaining high speed wasn’t just short bursts of power, but consistency.

Kunan was an experienced driver and knew he couldn’t push the horses to their absolute limit constantly, or they would quickly become exhausted.

Dias glanced around and said with a sigh of relief, "We’re pretty lucky. We’ve been running for so long and haven’t seen a single enemy."

The words had barely left his mouth when a group of Beastman Soldiers appeared up ahead.

Lisa cursed, "You jinx! Dias, can you please just shut up?!"

Dias said innocently, "How is this my fault?"

Lanya leaned out to see the situation ahead. "Stop arguing," she said. "Prepare for battle."

Kunan began to slow down.

But Li Wei shouted, "Speed up! Charge straight through! I’ll take care of the enemy."

Hearing this, Kunan hesitated for a moment.

Lanya yelled, "Do as Li Wei says!"

Kunan no longer hesitated. He cracked the reins. "Giddy-up!"

The carriage accelerated once more, charging toward the swarm of Beastman Soldiers.

Li Wei stood up, leaning against the carriage as the Shadow Attendant held him in place to keep him from falling.

He raised his Magic Staff, pretending to cast for a moment.

He waited until the enemy was in range.

"Chain of Small Fireballs Skill!"

WHOOSH WHOOSH WHOOSH!

One after another, Small Fireballs flew out at a moderate pace, shooting toward the cluster of Beastman Soldiers.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The continuous magical bombardment quickly scattered the Beastman Soldiers, who turned and fled.

They thought they had run into a whole group of Mages.

WHOOSH!

The carriage skirted the battlefield and sped away.

Lisa’s eyes went wide, her jaw hanging open. "So powerful!"

Lanya was also completely shocked. She hadn’t expected Li Wei to become this strong after just one month.

He had single-handedly and effortlessly defeated an entire group of Beastman Soldiers.

Forget a single person; even a full squad of Professionals would have had to expend considerable effort to deal with that many Beastmen.

After routing the group of Beastmen, they traveled peacefully for a while longer.

Suddenly, a black line appeared on the horizon.

Li Wei tried to make out what it was.

Lisa shrieked in terror, "Beastmen! So many Beastmen! We’re surrounded!"

Lanya’s heart sank. ’This is bad! Did Li Wei go too hard just now, making the Beastmen think we’re escorting the real target?’

She didn’t believe the real target would be in this carriage.

Orn would surely have chosen the strongest squad for the escort.

The Grass Fox Squad, even with Li Wei, was only lower-middle-tier among the ten squads.

Among the ten squads, there were plenty of powerful teams whose leaders and members were Tier Two Professionals.

She was terrified that the Beastmen had misunderstood and were now focusing all their efforts on annihilating the Grass Fox Squad. If so, their chances of survival were practically zero.

"Kunan, turn!" Lanya yelled.

He didn’t need her reminder. Kunan was already turning the carriage, moving away from the Beastman Army that had appeared in the distance.

After changing direction several times, they realized with despair that large numbers of Beastmen were visible no matter which way they turned.

Dias wailed, "It’s over! We’re really surrounded!"

Kunan hesitated for a moment, then asked, "Should we head back to Cold Sand City?"

It wasn’t clear who he was asking.

Li Wei said, "It’s no use. The way back is blocked too."

"Right now, we can only run in one direction and try to break through the encirclement before the Beastman Army closes it completely."

"We’re not the only squad that’s been surrounded. The other nine squads are inside the circle too."

"The Beastmen have made their encirclement so wide, there’s bound to be a weak spot."

"But even if there is a weak spot, how would we know where it is?" Kunan said helplessly.

Just then, the Shadow Attendant slipped out from under the carriage and returned to Li Wei’s side.

Li Wei shouted, "Head east! There are fewer Beastmen to the east!"

His Shadow Attendant had just been scouting the area and reported back that the Beastman Army to the east had not yet closed the circle.

This situation was, in fact, related to Li Wei.

For the past three days, Li Wei had taken on outpost-clearing missions every morning, and he had focused almost exclusively on the Beastman outposts east of Cold Sand City.

The eastern outposts had suffered a series of devastating blows, always getting wiped out to the last man with no survivors.

As a result, the nearby Beastmen didn’t dare get too close to Cold Sand City.

They were terrified of running into that fearsome Human Mage.

Li Wei had become infamous among the Beastman Race’s outposts east of Cold Sand City.

Blast Mage, Ghost Mage... these were all nicknames the Beastmen had given him.

This directly led to the Beastman Soldiers on the eastern front being a step slower when the Beastman Army launched its encirclement, creating a gap in their lines.

Those who didn’t know the truth might have mistaken it for the Beastman Race’s tactic of "surrounding on three sides and leaving one open."

Li Wei continuously sent his Shadow Attendant to scout the surroundings, directing Kunan to turn and evade enemies. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

As they raced along, they gradually became the lead escort squad.

Seeing this, the other escort squads all fell in line behind them.

When Lanya saw this, she thought, ’This isn’t good.’

’If all the escort squads run in the same direction, doesn’t that completely defeat the purpose of splitting up to confuse the enemy?’

Just as she was worrying about this, she suddenly heard earth-shattering battle cries from the distance.

A group of human soldiers charged out, surrounding the Beastman Army that was pursuing them.

The Beastman Soldiers were caught completely off guard, thrown into chaos as men and mounts were overturned.

As battle cries erupted from all sides, Li Wei whipped his head around to look, his heart skipping a beat.

After a moment’s thought, he seemed to understand something.

Orn had actually used the City Lord as bait to lure the enemy into an ambush.

In order to surround and intercept the carriages escorting the City Lord, the Beastmen had spread their forces thin to encircle a vast area around Cold Sand City.

This meant that when the Beastman Army was counter-ambushed by the human forces, they couldn’t reinforce each other in time.

Seeing the human soldiers charging out from all directions, Li Wei realized that Orn had planned this all along.

Otherwise, how could there be human soldiers lying in ambush in the middle of nowhere like this?

The brilliant light of Water Magic bloomed in the distance, and Li Wei gazed toward it.

"Tier Three Water Magic!"

Within the vicinity of Cold Sand City, only Marina Mage was capable of casting Tier Three Water Magic.

Although she was a Tier Two Mage, as a traditional Mage, she could use Magic Materials to assist in Casting as long as she had learned a Tier Three Magic spell.

Without a doubt, Orn had been meticulously planning this battle for a long time.

Otherwise, Marina, who should have been on the front lines, couldn’t possibly have appeared here so coincidentally.

Even from a great distance, Li Wei could still see the Tier Three Water Magic devastating the Beastman Army.

A terrifying wave of water instantly shattered the Beastman Army’s defensive line.

It was utterly overwhelming.

The human soldiers seized the opportunity to cut through the Beastman Army.

Victory was only a matter of time.

The battle had nothing to do with Li Wei and the others. Kunan urged the carriage onward, breaking out of the encirclement and leaving the battlefield far behind.
