Chapter 187: Shao Xia’s harsh words

Priestess Yuan thought about how Yuan Ni was willing to die for Shao Xia. Since this mer wanted to die so much, she would kill him herself! At least that way, she wouldn’t have to be embarrassed like she had to be today.

"I asked you to stay with Ruan Chanchan, but you didn’t like her. You even told me that you would rather die than stay with her, and what did you find in return? A woman who asked you to die for her, and even when you were dying, she didn’t show even the slightest bit of sympathy. The more I look at you, the more I wonder if you are really the son of my daughter. She was so smart that no one could fool her, even when she was half asleep. Everyone feared her name, and you? You are simply useless! Of all the women you could find, you found someone like Shao Xia."

Priestess Yuan furiously roared; with her expression alone, Yuan Ni knew that he was not going to escape from this beating. He now felt regretful why did he had agreed with Shao Xia? That woman left him alone and even abandoned him, and now, because of her, he was getting beaten up. If he had known that this was going to happen, then he would have never dared to act so wilfully.

"Grandmother, let me go... please forgive me. I understand that you are upset, but I have learnt my lesson. Don’t worry, I will never do it again. I will never do it again—please! Please!" Yuan Ni begged his grandmother in the hope that the woman would let him off, but Priestess Yuan was livid. How could she leave Yuan Ni so easily? She glared at the mer like a huntress and chased after him.

"AHHHH!!!"

"What? What happened?" Ruan Chanchan sat up straight and ran out of the cave. She was worried that Shao Xia might have pulled another sneaky one on her. However, when she ran out, she found out that it had nothing to do with Shao Xia; it was Yuan Ni and Priestess Yuan. She looked at the mer who was being chased around by his grandmother and yawned. She didn’t feel that there was anything wrong with what was happening to Yuan Ni. After all, this brat had caused her a lot of trouble!

Since his grandmother wanted to teach him how to behave as a human, she was not going to interrupt.

Ruan Chanchan stifled a yawn and scratched the back of her head before spinning around on her feet and skipping over to somewhere.

Yuan Ni had no idea that the person who had caused him to run like a headless chicken didn’t even wish to bother with him; he ran hard and fast. However, no matter how fast he ran, he couldn’t escape his grandmother. It was only when someone from the tribe couldn’t see him getting beaten as if he had murdered someone’s family and restrained his grandmother that he was able to escape from the mess.

Yuan Ni looked behind him and felt a little relieved when he didn’t see his grandmother chasing him anymore; it was good that she was restrained, or else he was worried that she would have beaten him to death. He couldn’t understand why his grandmother lost his temper with him. Even though he didn’t get a chance to vent his grievances and anger, his grandmother was the one who ran first to hit him. What was this? Why was he the one getting beaten up? Yuan Ni couldn’t understand. He simply loved someone and repaid her for what she did for him. He never wanted to hurt someone with his actions, and he was the one who got hurt the most – so why was he the one getting beaten up?

Clearly, he was the one who almost died. What was his grandmother so unhappy about?

Yuan Ni was upset, but he didn’t know what to say or what he had done wrong that had made his grandmother so angry. He slowly walked toward the river that flowed past the tribe and headed upstream, where the water was a bit too deep. He looked at the shimmering water that was lit up under the moonlight and didn’t know what to think of the current situation. Why was everyone blaming him? He was also a victim, alright. Was he not?

Just as he was lost in his own sad thoughts, he heard the sound of someone walking toward him from behind. He turned around upon hearing the sound of rustling leaves and grass and saw a familiar face.

"Shao Xia?" Yuan Ni was quite touched despite his disappointment when he saw Shao Xia. He thought that the woman had finally thought it through and come to see him.

But who would have thought that as soon as she came to a stop in front of him, she raised her hand and slapped him on the face? The impact was way too hard, and she knocked Yuan Ni down onto the ground.

"Shao Xia?" Yuan Ni raised his hand and touched his cheek that was stinging so hard that he could feel it throb under his fingers. Even though they had quarrelled many times, Shao Xia had never raised her hand at him. Her actions could not help but shock Yuan Ni to his core.

"You useless trash, you couldn’t even do this little thing well. You still think that I will like you? I wanted to take advantage of you, and yet you made such a mess. All those nights that I spent with you, you have wasted them. Now I feel annoyed just thinking about how I wasted so much time on an idiot like you—I should have found someone more cunning. At least with a proper head on his shoulders."

Yuan Ni was stunned; he had never expected such a thing to happen, nor did he ever think that this was what Shao Xia thought about him. He put his life at risk, and he was just an idiot in her eyes? An idiot? Whose advantage did she fail to take?
