Chapter 16: Chapter 16 Thirty Guns vs Eleven Girls

Eleven nail guns against thirty automatic rifles - there was no fight to speak of. Magnus and his ten teammates were herded into the truck garage.

The place was huge. Though there were five shutter doors outside, the inside was all connected. Dim emergency lights hung in the corners of the ceiling, casting enough light for Magnus to spot three brand-new sleeper coaches parked against the side wall.

Surrounded in the center of the garage space with his ten female teammates, Magnus looked calm on the surface, but inside, he was boiling.

Who the hell are these people?

The weapons these thirty-plus soldiers carried went far beyond "well-equipped." They were all dressed identically - bulletproof helmets, nylon fiber face masks, night-vision goggles, and plated ballistic vests with flared skirts.

Their weapons were top-tier domestically made - Type-03 full-auto assault rifles and Type-06 full-auto long-barreled handguns built for offense.

These weren’t your average soldiers.

Even back in his past life with the Emberleaf Legion, Magnus hadn’t seen gear this advanced. Or maybe he’d just been ignorant.

With all their weapons seized, the threat from the enemy lessened a bit - guns lowered. From their unit, one woman stepped out, circling the group twice before stopping right in front of Magnus. Her tone came out cold, sharp.

"What are you? What the hell are you doing here?"

"This... this lady..." Luxe suddenly stood half a step in front of Magnus, somehow plucking up the nerve. "We’re students from Springvale University. You won’t harm us, right? Really, we mean no harm... honestly."

"Students?" The woman gave a beat. "All of you - take off your helmets. I want to see for myself."

The ten girls traded looks, then one by one removed their motorcycle helmets, long hair falling free. Magnus stood still, unmoved. His sole focus was buying time - just twenty minutes, enough for Emily and the others outside to escape.

"Hmph..."

Seeing Magnus uncooperative, the woman gave a brief, scornful laugh, then removed her own helmet and peeled off her face mask.

Her face was sharp, striking.

"Grace?" Magnus blurted, caught off guard. "Grace... how - how could it be you?"

He yanked his helmet off, ready to step forward, then stopped himself midway. Right - at this point in time, she didn’t know him yet...

Still, what was Grace doing here - dressed and armed like this?

"Grace?" the woman repeated, her face flickering with confusion for just a moment before shutting down again. "You’ve got the wrong person."

Wrong person? She said I mistook her... not "how do you know me"?

Magnus stared at her face, frowning slightly. Something didn’t add up.

"You’re... not Grace Reid?" he asked, not fully convinced. After the apocalypse, most Awakened had a faint red glint in their eyes - but speed Awakened were different. Their eyes shimmered with a faint purple hue, not easy to spot unless you knew what to look for.

Grace had been the only speed Awakened Magnus had seen in his past life. And now, staring at this woman in front of him, her large eyes faintly glowing purple - how could he be mistaken?

"Hmph." Her face was cold. "Don’t bring her up to me again. I don’t have such a pathetic sister."

Sister?

Magnus froze, stunned. "You’re Grace’s sister? Sophia Reid? You two... you’re twins?"

She gave another cold snort and turned around, leaving only her silhouette, long hair falling over her shoulders. Her voice trembled slightly. "Do you... do you know where she is?"

Grace should still be at her dance studio. She was a ballet instructor. In his last life, he and Emily had found her there. He’d planned to rescue her tomorrow.

But no way he’d say that now. Not yet. He had bigger plans first.

Thirty-plus armed female soldiers, weapons sharp and slick - this kind of prize, even the ruthless Emberleaf Legion would drool for. He wasn’t about to let this go.

Decision made, Magnus cleared his throat and stepped forward. "Of course I know where she is."

Sophia suddenly whipped around, those sharp, beautiful eyes locked on his face like blades. "Don’t you dare use her to threaten me. If you’ve got a brain, say where she is, and I’ll let you all walk free."

"You’re a speed Awakened, right?" Magnus didn’t take the bait. "If I’m not wrong, your speed’s now more than four times what it was. Yet your strength? Unchanged. Am I right?"

"How do you know that!? Who are you?" Sophia’s guard shot back up. Around them, the female soldiers took aim again, guns pointed at Magnus.

"Hah!"

Magnus’s expression hardened. He took another bold step forward, glaring right back at them, defiant.

"What, this all you’ve got? We’re just students with no weapons, and you’re this jumpy? Go ahead - shoot me!" He jabbed a finger at his temple, fixing Sophia with a fiery stare from a single step away.

Something in that gaze shook her.

She exhaled deeply, then calmly raised her right hand. The guns lowered.

She opened her mouth to say something - but in that instant, Magnus moved. Quick and clear - it was an attack motion.

Sophia jolted. She was no rookie - her speed now fourfold. No way he’d land a hit.

She shifted left instantly, a blur.

But what happened next - she never saw it coming.
