Harem Link Cultivation System-Chapter 41: Before the Gates of Snow
Morning frost still clung to the stone when Lin Tian lowered his sword.
He rolled his wrist once and let out a slow breath, then murmured, "Status."
Light appeared in his inner sight.
[ Realm: Elementary Spirit Realm — Seventh Level ]
[ Foundation Stability: High ]
[ External Signature: Suppressed — 64% Stability ]
[ Partner Synchronization: Stable ]
He let it fade and flexed his fingers.
"So it’s good for now," he muttered to himself, then tightened his grip on the practice blade and ran through the first Lin clan form again.
A footstep approached.
He finished the sequence before turning.
Bai Xueya stood at the entrance.
"You’re training before sunrise again," she said while walking in, her gaze scanning him from head to toe. "You didn’t rest much."
"I slept enough," he replied, wiping sweat from his collar. "You’re dressed formally."
"They informed me before dawn," she answered. "Elder Shen changed the schedule."
He frowned slightly. "Changed how?"
"We leave tomorrow morning," she said calmly, though her fingers were clasped tightly behind her back. "Not the day after."
He lowered the sword slowly.
"So she wants less time for me to adjust."
"Yes," Xueya replied, stepping closer. "She does not like uncertainty, and you are currently one."
He gave a small breath that was almost a laugh. "Fair enough."
She stopped in front of him and held out her hand. "Your wrist."
He offered it without hesitation.
Her fingers wrapped around his skin, cool and steady. He felt the trace beneath respond faintly, then quiet.
"It’s better now," she murmured while examining it. "What did you do?"
"I guided qi around it carefully," he answered. "Elder Mei reinforced the circulation path last night. I followed it exactly."
"You told her about the interference," she asked.
"It happened in her garden," he replied. "Hiding it would have been disrespectful."
A faint smile appeared. "You’re honest even when it would be easier not to be."
"I prefer to know where I stand."
She looked at him for a moment longer, then asked softly, "Did it hurt when they tried to provoke you?"
"It stung," he admitted. "Not enough to shake me."
Her jaw tightened. "They were testing your reaction."
"I know."
"Elder Shen noticed."
He raised a brow. "That’s good or bad."
"It depends," while releasing his wrist. "She respects control. She dislikes unpredictability."
"I can manage control," he answered. "Unpredictable is harder."
Her gaze softened slightly. "You are not as unreadable as you think."
He stepped closer. "You can read me."
"Yes."
They stood close for a moment.
"Come," after a breath. "Meditate with me before the clan gathers."
They moved to the east pavilion and sat across from each other.
He closed his eyes and matched her breathing.
After several minutes, she spoke quietly without opening hers.
"It feels stable," she said. "The frost inside me is not pushing outward."
"Good," he replied. "Your qi is smooth today."
She opened her eyes and looked at him directly. "You are holding back the deeper reservoir."
"Yes."
"You are sure," she asked.
"Yes," he repeated. "If I pull more now, they will see it. And I don’t want my growth to look artificial."
Her lips curved slightly. "You are thinking like someone who intends to survive long term."
"I intend to."
Footsteps hurried toward them.
A Bai attendant bowed deeply. "Miss Bai. Young Master Lin. Elder Shen ordered full departure preparation. We leave at dawn."
"Understood," Xueya said calmly.
The attendant left.
Lin Tian remained seated.
"One day," he said quietly.
She nodded. "One."
He stood and extended a hand to her. She accepted it and rose.
"They want you under their roof quickly," she said while walking beside him. "It is easier to control the environment that way."
"I assumed that would happen eventually," he replied. "I just hoped for another day."
She stopped and faced him.
"You are not afraid," she said.
"I am cautious," he corrected.
"That is not the same thing."
"I am not afraid of evaluation," he said. "I am aware of power differences."
Her eyes sharpened. "They will measure more than cultivation."
"I know."
"They will examine your temperament, your ambition, your loyalty, your limits," she continued. "If they sense hesitation, they will push harder."
He looked at her steadily. "And if they sense pride."
"They will crush it," she answered without pause.
He nodded once. "Then I will not offer either."
She studied him carefully.
"Lin Tian," she said more quietly, "if they try to separate us temporarily for testing, do not react impulsively."
"I won’t," he replied.
"Even if they imply that your presence burdens me."
He held her gaze. "Do you believe that."
"No," she said immediately.
"Then I don’t care what they imply."
Her expression softened.
"You speak simply," she said. "It makes it harder to argue with you."
He gave a faint smile. "That’s intentional."
By midday the Lin clan gathered in the main courtyard.
The Patriarch stood at the front steps. Lin Haoyang lingered nearby with his arms crossed.
Lin Tian stepped forward and bowed.
"You leave sooner than expected," the Patriarch said.
"Yes," Lin Tian answered.
"Azure Snow dislikes uncertainty," the Patriarch continued.
"I understand."
The old man descended one step and looked at him directly. "You go as a candidate. Do not behave like someone seeking charity."
"I won’t," Lin Tian replied.
Lin Haoyang stepped forward and shoved a wrapped bundle into his hands.
"Take these," Haoyang muttered. "Reinforced bracers. They’re not impressive but they’ll take a hit."
Lin Tian unwrapped them slightly and ran a thumb over the surface.
"You didn’t have to," he said.
"I did," Haoyang replied. "If some sect disciple tries to test you physically, I’d rather you don’t get injured over something stupid."
"I’ll keep that in mind."
Haoyang leaned closer. "And don’t let them talk you into a corner. You already proved you can fight."
"I proved I can survive," Lin Tian corrected.
"That’s enough for now," Haoyang said.
Behind them, his grandfather spoke up.
"Bring her back smiling," the old man said firmly.
Lin Tian’s chest tightened.
"I will," he answered.
Bai Xueya stepped forward and bowed respectfully.
"Thank you for sheltering me," she said. "I will not forget it."
The Patriarch inclined his head. "Return when you can."
Night settled quietly.
Lin Tian found her again at the pavilion.
She stood looking at the pond, hands resting on the stone railing.
"You’re thinking," he said while approaching.
"Yes," she replied without turning.
"About the sect."
"About the gates," she said softly. "About how they will look at you."
He stood beside her.
"They can look," he said. "I don’t mind being observed."
"I mind if they try to humiliate you," she replied.
He looked at her profile. "Would that change anything."
Her fingers tightened on the railing. "It would anger me."
"I would rather you stay calm," he said quietly.
She turned to him.
"You would endure insult."
"If it serves a purpose," he said. "Not blindly."
She stepped closer.
"And if kneeling was demanded."
"I would decide when to kneel," he answered evenly. "Not respond out of fear."
Her breath caught slightly.
"You are not reckless," she said. "You are stubborn."
"Probably," he admitted.
She lifted a hand and placed it against his chest.
"You do not need to prove yourself immediately," she whispered. "Growth takes time."
"I know," he said. "I am not chasing applause."
Her shoulders relaxed a little.
"They may separate us for assessment," she said. "Do not assume it means rejection."
"I won’t," he replied.
She searched his face.
"And if they offer you something in exchange for distance."
He looked at her steadily. "There is nothing they can offer that replaces you."
Her eyes widened slightly.
"That is a serious statement," she murmured.
"I meant it seriously."
She leaned forward and rested her forehead briefly against his shoulder.
"I do not regret choosing you," she said quietly.
"I know," he replied, sliding his arms around her waist.
They remained like that for a while.
At dawn, frost covered the courtyard again.
Elder Shen descended on an ice platform that hovered steadily above the ground.
"You are prepared," she said without greeting.
"Yes," Lin Tian answered.
She extended her hand. "Your wrist."
He stepped forward and offered it.
Cold qi brushed lightly over the mark.
"You stabilized it," she observed.
"Yes."
"You learned restraint."
"I’m trying to."
She withdrew her hand and glanced at Bai Xueya.
"You will resume your duties upon arrival."
"I understand," Xueya replied calmly.
"And you," Shen continued while looking at Lin Tian, "will undergo formal evaluation as a provisional candidate."
"I accept."
Her lips curved slightly. "Confidence is acceptable. Arrogance is not."
"I know the difference," he said.
She gestured toward the platform. "Board."
Lin Tian turned to the Lin clan and bowed deeply.
When he straightened, Haoyang lifted a fist slightly in silent encouragement.
He stepped onto the ice.
It was cold but firm.
Bai Xueya joined him.
Their hands brushed.
He intertwined his fingers with hers deliberately.
A ripple of whispers moved through the watching disciples.
Elder Shen noticed but said nothing.
As the platform began to rise, Xueya tightened her grip.
"They will watch everything," she murmured.
"Let them."
She looked at him carefully.
"And if they attempt to place us on different paths."
He squeezed her hand slightly. "Then we walk until they realize the paths intersect."
Her lips curved faintly.
"You sound certain."
"I am."
The platform rose higher.
Cloudcrest shrank beneath them.
She looked ahead toward the distant white peaks.
"Side by side," she said softly.
"Side by side," he answered.
He did not look back.
