Harry Potter and the Secret Treasures-Chapter 1296: Felix Felicis
Slughorn didn’t notice Hermione’s embarrassment. He asked excitedly, “I have to confirm, Miss Granger — are you absolutely sure you’re not related to Hector Dagworth-Granger, who founded the Most Extraordinary Society of Potioneers?”
“No, Professor, I’m Muggle-born.”
“Yes, you and Mr. Mason are both Muggle-born. I can see why Dumbledore thinks so highly of you!” said Slughorn with a big smile. “As Ravenclaw said, ‘Wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure.’ With that treasure, I’m certain you’ll achieve extraordinary things in the future.”
Malfoy’s expression was one of obvious disdain at Slughorn’s words.
Just as Evan raised his head, he caught sight of Malfoy making a retching gesture.
The next second, he noticed Evan’s gaze and their eyes met briefly. He obviously hesitated for a moment, but quickly recovered.
Malfoy did not hide the sneer on his face, but turned his head and whispered something to Nott, and the two of them sniggered,.
Did that guy really think that he could be fearless just by joining Voldemort?
Ever since that incident two years ago, Malfoy had not dared to provoke Evan and Hermione.
Mocking Hermione in class was something that hadn’t happened in a long time — especially not in front of Evan.
Malfoy’s behavior this term was markedly different. It wasn’t just with Harry; his attitude toward Evan had also undergone a stark change. He no longer displayed the same hesitance and wariness he once had toward Evan, as if he had made up his mind about something.
Perhaps, his identity as a Death Eater had given him some kind of delusion…
Evan thought for a moment, then lowered his head to study the textbook in his hand.
He didn’t mind Malfoy’s change, it wasn’t a big deal.
In his opinion, Malfoy really needed some courage, otherwise how would he attempt to assassinate Dumbledore?
If he’d really received this task from Voldemort, then his current reaction was quite normal.
If it were any other weak-willed guy, he would have given up and collapsed long ago.
Malfoy had only become a little more unscrupulous now, and had returned to his old self. It could be said that he was in a very good state of mind!
Evan didn’t care about Malfoy and his stupid plan at all. His attention was now mainly focused on the textbook in hand.
Despite all the annotations and alterations on its pages, it still wasn’t clear whether this was Snape’s copy.
Or perhaps it was missing a crucial detail, but Evan wasn’t ready to believe that just yet.
The page he was looking at happened to cover Veritaserum. Evan was very familiar with the potion’s formula and brewing process, but the alterations in the textbook almost completely changed the classic recipe — most of it consisted of ideas he had never considered before.
Could the potion still be brewed successfully with so many changes? Or was this not Snape’s book at all, but merely some student’s random scribbles?
It seemed that the only way to be sure was to try it out.
Evan had always admired Snape’s potion-making skills, recognizing him as one of the few true Potions Masters.
This meant that he was qualified to modify existing potion recipes and even create new ones.
But now it seemed that if the changes in this book were really effective, then Snape’s true level was even higher than Evan had imagined.
He closed the textbook and returned it to Harry, preparing to see the effect when he started brewing the potion. freёnovelkiss.com
At the front of the classroom, Slughorn was gazing at Hermione with satisfaction.
“Well, well, take twenty well-earned points for Gryffindor, Miss Granger,” he said. “As for this cauldron of Amortentia — it’s brewed to perfection.Very often, it can help you, inexperienced fledglings, take an important step in matters of romance.”
Many students stared in awe at the cauldron emitting spiraling pink steam, their expressions dazed and dreamy.
For a long time, love potions had been among the most sought-after potions.
Of course, they were illegal, but there were always people trying to get their hands on them.
Fred and George’s “WonderWitch” product line was a prime example. While they claimed it was the most advanced love potion available, it was actually a diluted, weaker version that only inspired a mild fondness from the opposite sex.
Despite this, this thing had been selling like crazy since it was put on the shelves, and many people had ordered it.
Not only students, many adult wizards had placed orders for it.
“But you must know that Amortentia doesn’t really create love, of course. It is impossible to manufacture or imitate love. No, this will simply cause a powerful infatuation or obsession. It is probably the most dangerous and powerful potion in this room — oh yes,” he said, nodding gravely at Malfoy and Nott, both of whom were smirking skeptically. “When you have seen as much of life as I have, you will not underestimate the power of obsessive love!
“Well, that’s enough introductions,” Slughorn continued. “Now, it is time for us to start work.”
“Sir, you haven’t told us what’s in this one,” said Ernie Macmillan, pointing at the smallest cauldron standing on Slughorn’s desk. The potion within was splashing about merrily; it was the color of molten gold, and large drops were leaping like goldfish above the surface, though not a particle had spilled.
Besides the love potion, it was the most captivating brew in the room — one that none of the students had ever seen before.
“Oho,” said Slughorn again, as if he had just remembered.
But the fact was, he hadn’t forgotten the potion at all. Slughorn had waited to be asked for dramatic effect.
And with good reason — the potion was of such importance that its revelation would undoubtedly cause a stir. Everyone would want to know more about it.
“Yes. That. Well, that one, ladies and gentlemen, is a most curious little potion called Felix Felicis. I take it,” he turned, smiling, to look at Hermione, who had let out an audible gasp, “that you know what Felix Felicis does, Miss Granger?”
“It’s liquid luck,” said Hermione excitedly. “It makes you lucky!”
Her words seemed to have magic power. The whole class seemed to sit up a little straighter. They leaned forward, with eager eyes fixed on the small cauldron.
“Quite right, take another ten points for Gryffindor. Yes, it’s a funny little potion, Felix Felicis,” said Slughorn. “Desperately tricky to make, and disastrous to get wrong. However, if brewed correctly, as this has been, you will find that all your endeavors tend to succeed … at least until the effects wear off.”
“Then why don’t people drink it all the time, sir?” said Terry Boot eagerly.
“Because if taken in excess, it causes giddiness, recklessness, and dangerous overconfidence,” said Slughorn. “Too much of a good thing, you know … true for all potions … highly toxic in large quantities. But taken sparingly, and very occasionally…”
