He Got Engaged to His First Love On the Day I Died-Chapter 119: Interested in a Widow with a Child
"I never thought Mr. Grant was such a devoted man. It seems you really loved Mrs. Grant when she was alive."
There was a clear hint of mockery and sarcasm in Natalie Morgan’s words.
The man’s lips curled slightly. "I wouldn’t put it that way. There were just some regrets and misunderstandings."
Natalie Morgan adjusted her clothes and smoothed her hair, then gave a detached smile.
"No wonder."
She didn’t stay much longer.
Natalie Morgan left the room to find Felix Finch.
Felix Finch had been pulled aside by Forrest Fletcher, busy making small talk and exchanging toasts with various political and business magnates.
So she didn’t go over to interrupt.
She sent him a text and left the party early.
Late at night in Fenchest, taxis were few and far between.
She stood by the roadside for a long time but couldn’t hail a cab.
With no other choice, she decided to spend the extra money and call for a ride.
An inky-black Rolls-Royce pulled up in front of her.
The window slid down.
"Miss Childs, need a lift?" Inside the car was Theodore Grant’s handsome, familiar face.
"No, thank you. I’ve already called a car. It should be here soon."
Natalie Morgan subconsciously took a step back, her tone polite but distant.
"In that case, I won’t impose." Theodore Grant’s voice was gentle and deep.
The window rose.
The car slowly pulled away.
Sitting in the passenger seat, Weller Kendall was so shocked by the face he had just seen that he was speechless.
"Mr. Grant, that person was..."
"Her name is Willow Childs. She’s Felix Finch’s girlfriend," Theodore Grant said nonchalantly.
Weller Kendall frowned slightly. ’Willow Childs?’
’Felix Finch found a woman who looks exactly like Natalie Morgan to be his girlfriend?’
’Isn’t that a bit too dramatic?’
"Weller, investigate this Willow Childs for me," Theodore Grant said in a low voice.
Weller Kendall turned, looking at Theodore Grant in bewilderment. "Mr. Grant, are you suspecting... she’s Mrs. Grant? But didn’t Mrs. Grant... back then..."
"Unless they’re twins, do you believe two people in this world can look exactly alike?"
Theodore Grant narrowed his dark eyes, cutting Weller Kendall off.
’Either way, he didn’t believe it.’
’No matter how well this woman could act, her eyes betrayed a hint of unease when she looked at him.’
’He couldn’t tell if that unease stemmed from the restraint of a stranger, or from his status and position, or some other reason entirely. He had no way of knowing.’
’That’s why he needed the truth.’
"Mr. Grant, I actually believe that people who look very similar can exist. And really, this Willow Childs isn’t exactly the same as Mrs. Grant. Mrs. Grant had a teardrop mole under her eye, and she wasn’t nearsighted. This Miss Childs wears glasses, and also..."
"Weller," Theodore Grant interrupted Weller Kendall’s naive assessment. "All of those things can be changed. Just investigate. I need the results as soon as possible."
"Yes, sir."
The black luxury car drove discreetly down the main avenue of Fenchest.
「Meanwhile.」
Natalie Morgan had also returned home.
"You’re back?" Serena Sutton looked at Natalie Morgan’s distracted expression and asked with concern, "What’s wrong? Did you have a fight with Dr. Finch?"
"No."
She let out a soft sigh.
There was a tightness in her chest.
Serena Sutton blinked in confusion. "Then what is it?"
"Serena." Natalie Morgan sank into the sofa, grabbing a throw pillow and hugging it to her chest. She said distractedly, "Tonight, I saw... Theodore Grant."
"What?" Serena Sutton’s heart leaped into her throat. "How could that be? Are you sure you didn’t see wrong? You haven’t seen him in three years, after all. Maybe your eyes were playing tricks on you."
Natalie Morgan shook her head slightly.
’How could her eyes be playing tricks on her?’
’She’d recognize him even if he were reduced to ashes.’
"It was really him. And I think he suspects me."
’Suspects her?’
’It’s only natural to be suspicious when you meet someone who looks identical to a person you know.’
’But...’
"Don’t be afraid. You’re not Natalie Morgan anymore. You’re Willow Childs. Your ID says Willow Childs, and Natalie Morgan’s official records were canceled long ago. So what if he recognizes you? Is he going to kidnap you and drag you back by force? If he really does that, he’d be breaking the law."
Though Serena Sutton’s words were tough, the hand holding Natalie Morgan’s was trembling slightly.
Natalie, on the other hand, was much calmer. "Serena, I’m not afraid of him really recognizing me. And so what if he does? Like you said, Natalie Morgan is long dead. I’m Willow Childs now—a widow living in Fenchest who was married once and has a child. He won’t be interested in a widow."
’He’s fastidious about that sort of thing.’
’She knew him too well.’
’A widow with a child isn’t someone he’d feel possessive over.’
"Alright, Serena, let’s not think about it. I’m tired, and you should go home soon too. Don’t you have to go back to Riverden tomorrow? Get some rest."
Serena Sutton was indeed supposed to return to Riverden tomorrow.
But Theodore Grant’s sudden appearance made her very worried about Natalie Morgan. "How can I be in any mood to go back when you’re like this?"
"Like what?" Natalie Morgan smiled and shook her head. "Don’t worry, I can handle it."
"You can really handle it?" Serena Sutton asked, uncertain.
"Yes. Now hurry up and go home."
Serena Sutton returned to Riverden.
Felix Finch was also kept at the Fletcher Family’s residence by Forrest Fletcher. The two only managed to meet once, just before he left Fenchest.
"Sorry, I’ve been a bit busy these past few days. The Finch Group has a new project in Fenchest, and my uncle..." Felix Finch started to explain.
Natalie Morgan shook her head gently, not minding. "It’s okay. You focus on your work. I have to work too. There’s nothing to be sorry for."
"I’ve been wanting to take you and Momo to the amusement park."
"Momo’s still young. We’ll have plenty of opportunities to go to the amusement park later." She didn’t want to be a burden to him. "Felix, just focus on your work. Momo and I are living a good life here. Our neighbors are very good to us, so don’t worry."
"Um..." Felix Finch had to bring one person up. "...Has... Theodore Grant... come looking for you again?"
After that one encounter at the party, she hadn’t seen Theodore Grant again. 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎
"He probably realized he had the wrong person and hasn’t looked for me again."
"That’s good." Felix Finch looked at the woman before him, still worried. He instructed her, "If he comes and gives you any trouble, call me. Don’t be afraid. I’ll protect you."
He said it with such conviction.
Natalie Morgan gave a faint smile.
’In this world, who can truly protect anyone else?’
’Other than yourself.’
The man in the luxury car parked outside the coffee shop was listening to Weller Kendall’s report on everything about Natalie Morgan.
"Her name is Willow Childs. Her official records and ID are registered in Fenchest. She used to work as a housekeeper, then married an old man and had a child. After the old man died, she’s been raising the child on her own and hasn’t remarried. She’s currently working as an art teacher at a vocational school."
"Mr. Grant, according to my investigation, her residency was registered in Fenchest three years ago. There’s no information on her before that, which is... highly unusual."
Theodore Grant watched the man and woman sitting by the coffee shop window.
He pulled out a cigarette and placed it between his lips. "It is highly unusual."
"Mr. Grant, do you think... this Willow Childs... could she possibly be Mrs. Grant?"
"What do you mean, ’possibly’?" He lowered his head to light the cigarette and took a deep drag. "Whether or not she’s Mrs. Grant depends on how long she can keep up the act."
